Cars all wrong
9 March 2023
I watched it for the cars. There was a Model A Ford, which didn't exist in 1922, and in town there were even some 1930's cars. The props department made a few boo boo's. Other cars were nice. The prototype of Star Trek and Lost in Space
27 April 2006
Now I know where the goofy robot on "Lost in Space" comes from. The robot in this movie is almost identical to it. This movie predates Lost and Star Trek by 10 years, I guess it must be the prototype. Campy space suits, weird over-serious acting (the same way anybody would act if they were on another planet, I guess), but this movie was made in 1956 in the wake of Sputnik so it might be the first of its type. And look at Leslie Nielsen with brown hair, and so young, but don't expect him to say "Don't call me Shirlie" this is not the funny Leslie that we are accustomed to by now. Also in this movie are the original "Beam me up Scotty" transports, where Altaira is transported in an almost identical way with even the same sound effects as in the 1960's Star Trek episodes. Doors that open automatically, guns that send out light beams just like phasers, masers and tasers...invisible force fields, computers that read your mind, scientists with IQ's of 180. Everything is here, if you watch this movie you can skip all the TV shows. And everything is low budget and campy, just like on TV.

One of the all-time classics.
26 January 2006
Bogart plays a villain who is so mean he makes Al Pacino's "Scarface" look like an altar boy. Davis is young and gorgeous in this movie, with incredible eyes...this is long before she would become the middle-aged hag with the cigarette-smokers voice. In this movie she was 28 and an absolute doll. The character played by Howard is flawless.

Of special interest is the portrayal of the two blacks in this 1936 movie, long before the civil rights movement. Slim the black outlaw, offers Joseph the black chauffeur, a drink. "Here's your drink colored brother." Joseph asks his employer, "Is it all right Mister Chisolm?" Then Slim mocks Joseph and his Uncle Tom attitude and says, "Listen to him, 'Is it all right Mister Chisolm.' Ain't you heard about the big liberation? Take your drink, weasel." This is very interesting dialog for its time period, because I never knew there was a "New Liberation" (of blacks) in 1936.

Good movie about the 60's. Great acting by Spacek.
25 January 2006
Sissy Spacek plays the part of a Peace Corps type who fought her own war on poverty, which she thinks is caused by rich people. So she joined a group of neo-Robin Hoods who wanted to steal from the rich and give to the poor in the same fashion that Mao and Stalin did, only in America. This famous late-60's revolution, that never happened because everybody was too stoned, is great for movie making, but how many times do we have to hear about the greedy capitalist pigs anyway? In 2006, it looks like a time capsule to a time when everybody was confused. The whole radical white college student thing of the late 60's, which had no purpose, was just a copy-cat movement based on the black civil rights movement of the early 60's, which had a purpose. These white kids in the 60's had all the civil rights already, so they had nothing to protest about, but they protested anyway because they were just doing it to be cool, and because they were stoned. Her boyfriend Henry Winkler is another liberal civil rights wanna-be that couldn't be, cause he had too many civil rights to start with, being a rich white kid like Sissy. I don't think Winkler makes a good hippie because he's an over-actor. He tries too hard to be a hippie, most hippies back then didn't act like this, they talked slower and acted more stoned, Winkler acts like an overexcited Fonzie with long hair, and he doesn't act stoned enough. Hey Cunningham! Spacek, on the other hand, is fantastic, and very believable, in the title role. The character she plays is dead on like the hippies I knew back then. Perfect. She would fit right in with the radicals of the times. Her boyfriend (Fonzie with hair) would not have fit in, he's a clown.

really stupid movie
2 January 2006
This has got to be one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. Every cliché is thrown at you as if you haven't seen them a million times before. The foul language to make us know how hip everybody is, the predictable foils in Stamos and Porzikova, the cliché "nice guys" in Reid and Scott. Nothing in this movie has any bearing on real life, because things happen all throughout the movie that would never happen in a million years in real life. The relationships in this movie have the depth of the 10 second zoo-match ups of bonobo apes. This movie looks like it was written and directed by a crew from pornography, only without all the pornography. It's like the worst episode of "Friends." You can tell this movie was created by men, and I'm embarrassed to say, it makes men look as shallow as the ladies say we are. From now on I'm going to stick with sappy "chick flick" romances as opposed to this male unfunny "sex comedy" flick, because at least the chick flicks aren't this dumb.
