Scoop is a biographical crime drama directed by hansal mehta.
Karishma tanna has acted out of her skins. In the first three episodes, she was good, her act was brimming with potential. But from 4th onwards, she touched the pinnacle. Bagged the primary character, did full justice to it. The paranoia, the breakdowns, the horrific mental state has been shown hauntingly well by her. Mohammad zeeshan ayyub, deven bhojani, tanmay dhanania acted outstandingly in supporting roles. Harman baweja was a surprise package after so many years. It seems he has upgraded his skills. The cast was amazing.
The writing of hansal mehta's show has always been strong. Not any different here as well. The peaks and crashes of journalism, the rivalries, the source snatchings, the ambitions, have been researched so well. The arc of jagruti pathak has been expanded brilliantly. The media trials and tribulations, the court proceedings are very real and genuine. The screenplay never lets the expositions and runtime feel lethargic. Its a big show and yet you feel engaged and engrossed.
The music by achint thakkar is bound to be a banger. After scam 1992 and rocket boys, he composes a very catchy theme and background score. The dialogues hit pretty hard. For eg:-"in the good old days, when journalism was good, it was termed controversial, but nowadays its the opposite, if the journalism is controversial, it is inevitably good. Shows the whole picture of contemporary decaying state of journalism in india. My personal favourite was "if a person tells you that its raining outside, and another one tells you its sunny, its not your job to quote them both, your job is to look out of the window." What an excellent dialogue it is. The ethics and economics of journalism both are put at loggerheads in this series.
The cinematography is outstanding as well. The sequences in jail are unnerving and disturbing at the same time. The power dynamics could have been fleshed out better, something that season 1 of criminal justice did pretty well.
