The Impotence of Being Ernest (#4.13)

Warning: Spoilers
Rose is going out on a date with a guy and Blanche is mad at first because she is having no dates, so she tries to figure out what is wrong with Rose's guy. Then Rose tells them that he is not having sex with her. After going away with him for the weekend she finds out that he is impotent. Still after some dating it works out but he dumps her to get back together with his ex wife.

The main story of the episode was kind of boring. Not much funny about it, although it had some sweet moments thanks to Rose.

The best is the second story about Sophia getting a feather in mail and there being some sort of past family vendetta. Very funny, Sophia at her best.

The ups and downs of Rose's dating life.

Warning: Spoilers
An improvement over recent episodes, this very funny episode deals with Rose's new boyfriend Ernie (Richard Herd) who reveals on a weekend away that he's impotent. Blanche, initially jealous that Rose has a date and she doesn't, tries to find out his shortcomings and the revelation of Ernie's issue only brings her satisfaction. But Ernie's issue seems to rise to the occasion of desire, and that brings him to a decision and gives Rose a very funny response when the girls inquire about her date. A very funny scene in a restaurant right before is the highlight of the episode.

The episode's subplot involves an old vendetta between Sophia and an old Sicilian acquaintance which makes Dorothy think that her mother has committed murder. Both plots are balanced together perfectly in a way that is a smooth transition between two well written stories and that makes this one of the better episodes of season four, let alone the whole series.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a very poignant episode where Rose helps out impotent Ernie, and succeeds! We don't see the beast with two backs or whether Rose and Ernie used protection, but the poignant and sad bit was at the end when Ernie, after achieving the peak of success, dumps Rose to patch things up with is wife. Ernie is a new man pre-viagra thanks to Rose's efforts.

A quality, funny and moving episode.

Sophia receives a parcel from Sicily containing a black feather, and Rose starts dating a man named Ernie, she's a little concerned however, when Ernie shows little interest in sleeping with her.

First of all, huge credit to the writing team, what a genius play with words. It does kind of let the cat out of the bag somewhat in terms of the story, but who cares, it works very, very well.

It's definitely funny, but once again this wonderful show manages to tell a white meaningful story, I can't imagine impotence was a key topic on many sitcoms. Loved Sophia's vengeance story, that was funny, I wish we could have gotten to meet Sunny.

The scene where Rose explains her weekend to Blanche and Dorothy was perhaps the best moment, with Blanche 0nce again delivering the laughs.

Richard Herd Was great as Ernie, a really nice actor, his scenes with Rose were excellent.

Funny and moving.

8/10.
