3/10
Impenetrable, esoteric, and, worst of all, boring
8 March 2020
Perhaps the greatest disappointment with "The Testament Of Orpheus" is that it professes to be a work of cinematic poetry, yet it's not particularly visually memorable; Cocteau's main trick, which he uses ad nauseam, is people and things magically appearing and disappearing into thin air. There is a 25-minute segment in the middle (the "trial") which is paralyzingly static and relentlessly talky. As the film is very "meta" about Cocteau's own past work, perhaps people more familiar with it will admire this one more; for me, its sense of humor was the only saving grace (but not saving enough). * out of 4.
