Best left alone and forgotten
dtm66623 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Sometime in 1998, Saban had acquired the rights to produce a brand-new Ninja Turtles live-action series. Naturally, being a fan of the TMNT back in the day, this obviously peaked my interest. So when I started watching the show... to say I was disappointed by the end result is an understatement. Some time later (more like recently), I got a chance to revisit the series.

First off, let's talk about some of the positives. They managed to re-create the Turtles' lair as it was last seen in the movies fairly well given the limited budget they threw in with this. There tends to be this darker atmosphere overall in terms of the sets and whatnot. And the Turtle suits, while not the greatest piece of puppetry and whatnot, were functional and seemed pretty sturdy for most of the action stuff that would follow in the series.

People tend to complain about getting rid of Shredder quickly and replacing him with these original villains who could have easily been used in a Power Rangers show. But you can only have Shredder get beat so many times before it gets boring and undermines his worth as a villain... and besides, most fans don't realize or don't remember or just plain ignore the fact that in the original comic, the Shredder was offed in the very first issue! Never mind the countless resurrections that would follow. So on a personal standpoint, I was sort of glad they got rid of Shredder because then the anticipation would build to the point where they would eventually bring him back in a later episode. I find that Shredder in small quantities work best because then his encounters with the Turtles are all the more memorable.

Unfortunately, they end up replacing him with these original villains who, as stated, seemed more fit for a Power Rangers show than a Ninja Turtles show. And with these new magic-wielding generics comes a new female magic-wielding turtle, the infamous Venus De Milo. I'll be honest; I never got comfortable with her. I'm not against the idea of a female turtle; I'm just against the idea of one who uses magic and thus sticks out like a sore sight among a clan of ninja turtles who seem somewhat out of their domain. I almost get the impression that this could have easily been the Venus De Milo show dealing with her make-believe enemies and the TMNT are just there to provide the star power (or whatever was left considering the timeframe this was released). Fortunately, they all share the spotlight together.

Next Mutation was canned after a season on the air and the creators were more than happy to ignore it. Given time and maybe another season, I really believe this live iteration of the TMNT could have been something and might have gotten a chance at greatness. But while the idea was sound, the execution was flawed (although there are a couple good episodes in this series). As it stands, Next Mutation is one of those oddities in Turtledom that is best left buried and forgotten.

Down the sewers
maxkaemmerer5 October 2009
This is the worst thing the TMNT franchise has ever spawned. I was a kid when this came out and I still thought it was deuce, even though I liked the original cartoon.

There's this one scene I remember when the mafia ape guy explains to his minions what rhetorical questions are. It's atrocious. Many fans hate on the series for including a female turtle, but that didn't bother me. So much so that I didn't even remember her until I read about the show recently. All in all, it's miserably forgettable.

The only okay thing was the theme song. Guilty pleasure, they call it... Nananana ninja...

So bad at everything
info-65411-1176312 November 2020
Why ? Just why ? Was everything so awful? Just a 3 star for the turtle suits. But damn splinter looked bad and the whole season was like watching a season of Xena warrior princess without all main characters

Bad Show That Was Going To Get Better
Dev30001 January 2005
I must admit from the start that I only watched half of the 26 episodes of terrible show and I was a huge fan of the previous movies and cartoons.

Though the first, and only, season of this show was terrible, it was supposedly suppose to become better with addition of April O' Neal, Casey Jones, and the Rat King in the second season, and the rumors of Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang being added after. This is a show that could have became great if given time, but like everything on TV they get rid of good ideas quickly and leave bad ideas on forever.

The reason for me not liking this show was I thought the bad guys were bad character ideas, they should have got the rights to use original and good villains, like Krang, Leatherhead, Rat King, and such, they were good ideas. This show might have seemed better if I hadn't seen any other Turtles shows or Movies, but compared to anything else associated to the Turtles, this show was complete crap.

Pure Garbage

This is the biggest insult to TMNT ever. Fortunantely, officially Venus does not exist in canon TMNT. There will never be a female turtle, this took away from the tragic tale of 4 male unique mutants who will never have a family of their own, once gone no more. The biggest mistake was crossing over Power Rangers to TMNT with a horrible episode; the turtle's voices were WRONG and they all acted out of character. They could have done such a better job, better designs and animatronics and NO VENUS.

don't bother with this people...it's cringe worthy material. the lip flap was slow and unnatural looking. they totally disrespected shredder. the main baddie, some dragonlord dude was corny. the turtles looked corny with things hanging off their bodies, what's with the thing around raph's thigh? the silly looking sculpted plastrons!?

If they looked normal, acted in character and got rid of Venus, got rid of the stupid kiddie cartoon sounds...and better writing it could have been good.

Worst Ninja Turtles Show Ever
kiti2219 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is the worst of the Ninja Turtles series much worse than the Third Ninja Turtles Movie

The Fight Scenes are Stupid, the Scenarios are Boring, the Dialogues are Horrible and the Villains are Terrible The turtles act more like Power Rangers than actual Ninja Turtles.

even the Opening has spoilers for those who watched the First Episode for the Female Turtle

This is a Terrible Mix of the Super Sentai series and/or Power Rangers and Ninja Tutles and its cause the Downfall of the Original Ninja Turtles

this is One of the Worst 90s Shows of all time

As stated above, it's pretty much more of a rip-off of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers than an actual TMNT TV series.

Avoid this Show at all costs

Shell Shocked
Terryfan6 February 2015
In life there is are some things you don't do.

You don't tug on Superman's Cape, You don't spit into the wind, You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger and you don't turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a Power Ranger's show.

And that is what exactly what Saban did, he took the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and turn it into another take along with his famous Power Rangers, VR Troopers Big Bad Beetleborgs Mystric Knights Of Tir Na Nog and whatever else he created back in the 90s.

To say this was a insult to the turtle fans would not give it justice because only seen some of this series and all I can say is that I've seen enough.

First off they bring in a new female turtle name Venus and to make matter worse the four turtles we grew up cheering that are suppose to be brothers are not brothers in this series so this mean that Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

All for bringing on a female turtle? Oh no sir that is just the worse idea in the long sad history of bad ideas.

It just this series should have never been created and it's clear to see why it only lasted one season.

Shame on you Saban for this disgrace to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles You left us all in Shell Shocked and that's not a good thing

The first few episodes were good, skip the rest!
MrGroovilicious10 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Goodness gracious, did this series have so much unused potential. The first few episodes did have a reasonably compelling story arc, regarding a dragon who's escaped from the dream world with plans of conquest. In these early episodes, Venus De Milo isn't nearly as much a plot device with no character or uninteresting as she is in the rest of the episodes.

A Dragon escaping a dream world may sound illogical, but if they could do something as illogical as battle ninjas who created mutant animal hybrids and also battle aliens from another dimension in their past shows, they can surely be allowed to do THIS.

The stories after the first story arc didn't focus on the dragons from the dream world at all, focusing on things that were illogical even for the ninja turtles! A talking albino ape who's a billionaire mob boss, no questions asked as to how such an ape can talk as he's not even a mutant. Shredder temporarily living with the turtles, which makes no sense because he died in the first episode of the show, so that's a major plot hole! A random hunter trying to hunt the turtles, even dressing up as a poodle at a costume party in their sewers to do so. And once they get back on the subject of the Dragons for an episode or maybe even 2, they don't focus on their threat as much as one insignificant and boring character among them. Such wasted potential.

If you decide to ever watch this series, only watch East Meets West. I'm warning you, your eyes will bleed mutagen if you watch the rest!

Okay, Abeit Flawed
jeremycrimsonfox5 December 2019
Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is a flawed attempt at reviving the green team after Power Rangers overshadowed it and became the popular children's heroes. Made by Saban Entertainment, the same company behind Power Rangers (and therefore, the company partly responsible for TMNT's downfall, other factors being the horrible third movie and the fact that the Turtle train ran out of steam, resulting in a drop in quality for the toys and cartoon), it's an okay attempt at a live-action Ninja Turtle series, but sadly, it is a flawed one.

The series is a loose continuation of the New Line films (therefore, we have the subway lair seen in the second and third film, and Splinter is still missing an ear). However, with this one, there is no April O'Neil or Casey Jones to be seen (although it's been said the two would appear had the series gained a second season). The heroes-in-a-half-shell are now 18-years-old in this show and are in for new adventures along with a new female Turtle, Mei Pieh Chi, a.k.a. Venus De Milo, a Shinobi apprentice (which in this show, Shinobi is another word for chi magician). Shredder is there, but only for the first two episodes, as he is defeated and replaced by a new villain named Dragon Lord, an evil dragon who leads The Rank, a group of dragons who were imprisoned by the ancestors of Venus' sensei, Chung I. Other villains used are all exclusive to this series, and that includes Silver, a yeti who is a crime boss, Dr. Quease, who is basically the show's Baxter Stockman, only he is into studying mutation, and Simon Bonesteel, a big game hunter who hunts and sells endangered species.

So, with this series, it is live-action with suit actors (like in the New Line films). However, the editing is poor, as you can see the suit actors missing stuff and a scene where Mikey accidentally touching Venus' chest in one episode due to the suits not giving much vision. Also, Saban make a lot of continuity mistakes in the series (like the controversial dialogue where Leonardo tells Venus the four Turtles we know and love are not really brothers). Plus Venus herself has been a controversial character. She is basically a fish out of water who uses "Shinobi magic" and her main thing is getting sayings wrong (like calling the Turtles' home a toilet and Raph correcting her that it's sewer).

Those flaws were enough to turn many TMNT fans away. The reason for its cancellation is conflicting, with official sources saying the ratings were not good, with another source saying Saban pulled the plug due to the show being expensive to produce and as Fox Kids did not own the TMNT franchise, they did not make any money from merchandise sales. From there on, the story continued online, however, when Kevin Eastman sold his share of the franchise to Peter Laird, Venus and all the other characters introduced would be erased and locked away, never to be used again (even as a joke, as Kevin Munroe would say in an interview for the 2007 TMNT film). While this is okay, the flaws do detract this show from being great, but I believe characters like Venus and Simon Bonesteel should be used in future series, especially if they were given improvements to fix the flaws this series showed.

I did not like the idea of the female turtle at all since 1987 we knew the TMNT to be four brothers with their teacher Splinter and their enemies and each one of the four brothers are named after the great artists name like Leonardo , Michelangleo, Raphel and Donatello so Venus here doesn't have any meaning or playing any important part and I believe that the old TMNT series was much more better than that new one which contains Venus As a female turtle will not add any action to the story we like the story of the TMNT we knew in 1987 to have new enemies in every part is a good point to have some action but to have a female turtle is a very weak point to have some action, we wish to see more new of TMNT series but just as the same characters we knew in 1987 without that female turtle.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is a very good kids show, the turtles still havent lost thier vibe.I'm not really sure how long this show lasted, but I know it didnt last very long. The acting in this show is a little bit below average, but thats something that you would have to exclude because this is a childrens show.Still the turtles still have a sense of humor, but the humor in this show isnt funny, but again its a childrens show.Despite those problems,Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation still is an entertaining show. Now,the creators have added a new turtle to the pack,Venus is the new turtle, and it is a female.I think that this show will eventually become a classic, even though it didnt last long.I liked this show, its entertaining.9 out of 10.

Poor take on the Ninja Turtles
supersayiansquid10 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The first 2 episodes were ok, but only because they didn't have a random sound effect for everytime a character does anything.

The 4 turtles themselves are a major issue because they sometimes don't act like themselves and can be extremely rude to Venus and each other that will vary for each episode so there can be an actual problem instead of doing it to fill the 20 minute run-time.

Venus has no flaws as a character... oh, and she gets constantly picked on and hit on by the other turtles. (The Turtles including Venus aren't related)

Splinter sometimes doesn't act like himself he would sometimes be rude and distant against certain conflicts where he should get involved in or argue against his sons.

The Dragonlord antagonist isn't interesting or leave an impact besides he and the Rank (his army of minions I guess) being on earth where they presumably eat people over the course of the show, but if they don't say anything about them eating people we can assume they just didn't do it in the show. (I know Dragonlord ate meat in the Gorilla episode that was a joke)

The other Villians like Bonesteel, Dr. Quease and Van-mii aren't worth talking about since they are villians that have a gimmick Bonesteel is about hunting, Dr. Queasy is about inventing machines. They can make dumb choices sometimes. I only talked about Dragonlord since he is the main antagonist and I was commenting on how effective if a villian he is.

That was my review of the show what'd you think?

A fun try
samgamgee198520 January 2004
This show suffers from what people refer to as the Saban Touch, but even if it does have poor effects and tired stories, it did serve as a fun, unique installment in the TMNT franchise. It may not be better than the old show, it's certainly not better than the new one, and the first two movies could be considered leaps ahead of this, but for a group of people who like their cheesy monster men made of rubber and silly fun, this show does bring out the inner child. Besides, the writing was good and funny, the voices of the characters worked well, and the action was a cut above other Saban series. It's darker than Power Rangers, but still completely child friendly. While many complain about Venus, I thought she was a good addition, if only for that show. She added a fun element that many TMNT fans secretly thought should be there, which was a female turtle. I mean, come on, what fanboy could honestly hate a CUTE ninja turtle? :) Anyway, this show should probably be considered an acquired taste for older fans, and for the PR generation more of the same stuff that still passes for Saturday morning action fare.

I never knew about this show until i found the dvd at a discount store.
ThunderKing610 August 2019
It's from the producers of Power Rangers. The show does have that Power Ranger feel.

It has great costume and production wise it's fantastic .

The flow of the story and the characters are fine too. They all have awesome teenage personalities. The villain is the cliche Power Rangers kind that always fails every ep.

However, its missing out on action and dept in story.

How did this show keep children engaged? Sometimes i get distracted with my phone and stop paying attention to the show.

Nevertheless it's an entertaining show.

One pleased fan right here
stonekeeper_ever16 March 2017
I fell upon this and I was flabbergasted to see that I spent my whole life not knowing it existed. So I spent the whole afternoon watching this with my 2 1/2 year-old son. It was our first binge together. Watched the first six episodes the first day and we watched four others the next. There's 26 total. First of all, I disagree with people saying that this is bad. It may be designed for children but I also disagree that it can only entertain them because I had fun. Personally I found that it was of good quality and very entertaining. Well done Turtles! 8/10

Don't watch it
Dgranthp1910 April 2004
If you ever were a TMNT fan...don't watch this. Honestly it will make you cry. If you think I am kidding....watch it. Just remember...I warned you!

Saban...give up..forever, spare us! This was too much like Power Rangers. Super formulamatical plots. A female turtle who's storyline doesn't fit at all. Bad Costumes, bad acting, bad villians! This move seriously was a slap in the face to the TMNT legacy. The new TMNT Cartoon however is a must-see...A true compliment to the series. Where as this took the movies and tried to go from there, the new 2003 series takes us through the often ignored world of comic books. With more edge and less goofball antics, we get to see the TMNT at their fighting best. Skip the next mutation and check out the 2003 series on the foxbox!

It's Good
Rygog22 January 2005
No matter what anyone says, Saban Entertainment did a great job in creating this series. Though it had a very short lived life, just like Masked Rider, VR Troopers, Big Bad BeetleBorgs, and the Mystic Knights. It did have a good one episode team-up in the sixth season of Power Rangers: Power Rangers in Space (which is going into it's 13th season Febuary 2005 and I'm still a fan). Too bad there wasn't a second season of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. Although Saban should have continuted the series, because you can tell the last episode was meant to lead into the next season. Also I love how they incorporated another Ninja Turtle into the series... Venus.

Nicely done
Op_Prime9 January 2000
Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation was a nicely done series. There were some flaws, but that can happen in any tv series. It lacks what the cartoon series and first movie had that made some special though. Basically, this show tries hard to live up to the previous incarnations and that's worth something. Good show.

This is EVEN worse than the movies and the cartoon put together
modius4 December 2000
I thought I had seen bad movie drivel in Superman IV - but this piece of hogwash REALLY takes the biscuit.

First of all I remember watching the very dark TMNT movie that was cool during the 80s and it wasn't half as bad as this drivel.

First they get rid of the only interesting character - Shredder and then they tell us there is a female Turtle who constantly uses one-liners in an arnie style. Unfortuently her one-liners are REALLY, REALLY bad...no, I mean, they are REALLY bad.

This TV show, produced by FOX is the most silliest, money-making scheme I've ever seen, and who knows what the producers were thinking "hey, I know lets make a tv show based on that really cool 80s movie but lets take out the most interesting character and give them the same script EVERY week".

Avoid this rubbish.

Saban is still trying.
Fonzie-27 April 1999
Face it, the people at Saban Eneterment just don't get it do they. You can't make cheesy tv. The world hated Power Rangers. So what do they do? They try to turn us on the Ninja Turtles. Well it just doesn't work that way.

I am a big TMNT fan, and this is not the way it should be done. Though I think that Saban sucks. They gave this a good effort. Still, it could be much better.
