“Kamen Rider Zo” (1993) was a remarkable addition to Keita Amemiya's expanding filmography. Despite a condensed runtime, the overall direction and execution were incredibly strong, which made up for that; hence, it remains one of the most favored pieces of media in the beloved superhero's extensive franchise and one of the director's finest films. It balanced fun sci-fi while respectfully honoring the thought-provoking themes the franchise is known for with a gritty edge, not to mention great creature designs. For Amemiya's second rendition of the cyber-enhanced grasshopper protagonist, he would switch gears with “Kamen Rider J,” a decent, if somewhat underwhelming, follow-up.

Hideaki Anno is one of the most brilliant voices in animation -- a writer, director, and animator responsible for masterpieces such as the hugely influential "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (and its many endings), but also the anime that did the same twist as Pixar's "Lightyear" much better and decades earlier. Anno additionally belongs to the prestigious club of animators who successfully made the jump to directing live-action projects alongside Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, and more. Anno not only brought Go Nagai's "Cutie Honey" to live-action successfully, but he also reinvented iconic franchises like "Kamen Rider" and "Godzilla."
The last one is important because Anno's "Shin Godzilla" is part of a new golden age of Godzilla stories. "Shin Godzilla" is a more satirical take on the King of the Monsters and a poignant movie inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, as well as the response...

With a title like Ninja vs Shark you might think this is another Mark Polonia film along the lines of Sharkula or Shark Encounters of the Third Kind. Or maybe one of the more bizarre Chinese kaiju films such as Land Shark. But you’d be wrong, it’s actually a Japanese film written by Junichiro Ashiki and directed by Kôichi Sakamoto.
During Japan’s Edo Period, Sayo, a pearl diver from the village of Okitsu, swims back to shore only to find the remains of one of her fellow divers washed up on the beach. This has been happening a lot since Lord Koshiro Mizuchi of the Crimson Devil Clan demanded the villagers hand over their pearls to him. When they refused he used sorcery to turn the sharks into living weapons.

One wouldn’t think that a schlocky slasher series about killer puppets would produce more than a dozen films across three decades, let alone sequels that are still being discussed today, yet here we are getting deep in the weeds over the straight-to-video sequel bliss that is Puppet Master 4. Puppet Master is easily the most successful property to come out of Charles Band’s Full Moon Features, best known for movies like Castle Freak and Subspecies, as well as more low-hanging fruit like The Gingerdead Man and The Evil Bong series. Puppet Master falls comfortably between these two extremes. After a satisfying initial trilogy that chronicles the grandiose revenge scheme of a persecuted toymaker, Puppet Master–like many long-running horror series–is forced to ask, “What’s next?”
In Puppet Master’s case, the franchise strangely pivots towards the rehabilitation of Blade, Leech Woman, Six-Shooter, and the rest of these...

The history of developers turning major movies and TV shows into video games is full of highs and lows. Sometimes, that adaptation process leads to games that are as big (if not bigger) than the properties they are based on. Other times, that adaptation process results in truly terrible experiences. In all those cases, though, those adaptations go on to enjoy some kind of reputation.
However, not every game based on a movie or TV show gets the legacy it deserves. A combination of factors can easily cause great (or very good) adaptions to fly so far under the radar that even fans of those properties don’t know they exist.
20. Scarface: The World is Yours
1983’s Scarface is a story about the rise and fall of the fictional cocaine kingpin Tony Montana. The movie ends in an epic shootout that he seemingly wins, right up until he takes a shotgun blast to the spine.

What’s most important to you in a superhero film – flawless special effects or having a good time? Hideaki Anno’s spirited take on the hit 1970s Japanese TV series (and later manga) Kamen Rider may look rough in places but the director knows exactly what he’s doing, and provided that you’re willing to roll with it, you’re bound to enjoy the ride.
The film belongs to the same universe as Shin Ultraman, which preceded it as a Fantasia selection, plus Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time and fan favourite Shin Godzilla. Anno has been creatively involved in all four, co-directing the latter with Shinji Higuchi. There are no plans for a fifth instalment, though it seems likely that all these characters will return to the big screen sooner or later. Compared to its stablemates, Shin Kamen Rider has a distinctly low budget look about it, but it has benefited.

Shin Ultraman, from Shin Godzilla filmmaking duo Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, finally dates a home release after a limited theatrical release earlier this year.
Look for the live-action comic book reboot to arrive on Digital on July 4 before heading to Blu-ray and DVD on July 11. No box art or special features have been revealed at this time.
In Shin Ultraman, “we learn the appearance of giant unidentified life forms known as ‘S-Class Species (Kaiju)’ has become commonplace in Japan. The Japanese Government formed a Kaiju defense taskforce known as the Sssp, led by Kimio Tamura (played by Drive My Car’s Hidetoshi Nishijima). After a particularly challenging encounter, a silver giant descends from the sky to rescue the country. Dubbed Ultraman, this giant’s identity and purpose are a mystery.”
Takumi Saitoh is playing the main character. In addition, Masami Nagasawa, Daiki Arioka, Akari Hayami, and Tetsushi Tanaka star in Shin Ultraman.

Fatally, perhaps, I went into Shin Kamen Rider as a Hideaki Anno fan first and a Kamen Rider fan… not so much. I knew about it, of course: the iconography of the motorbike-riding superhero with his bug-eyed grasshopper mask is as thoroughly ingrained into Japan’s pop-cultural consciousness as any Marvel or DC character in the States, having been a staple of TV, film, manga, and young boys’ imaginations for over half a century. Consume enough Japanese pop culture, and some exposure to Kamen Rider––his bike, his mask, his kabuki-like battle poses––is inevitable. Having seen barely one of the hundreds of hours of Kamen Rider content out there, however, I could not fill you in on the finer points of its character names, relationships, or plotlines––meaning that when Anno’s latest, allegedly standalone film stopped for regular applause lines and deep-cut lore references that received whooping ovations...

When looking at some special effects-heavy films that have come out of Japan in recent years, the “Shin Japan Heroes Universe” has graced audiences with some of the more unique and higher-quality tokusatsu titles in a long time. In particular, the live-action movies from this ongoing collaborative series are more than just standard reboots of long-existing franchises. “Shin Godzilla” and “Shin Ultraman” were clever reimaginings that modernized their respective franchises while preserving the themes each one embodied. Hideaki Anno celebrates the legacy of yet another groundbreaking series for the latest installment of these reboots as he delivers a spectacular action-packed emotional rollercoaster of a feature with his new film “Shin Kamen Rider.”

After reimagining two other larger-than-life Japanese icons, Hideaki Anno naturally sought out another tokusatsu juggernaut to complete his “Shin” trilogy. And after the success of both Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, fans of the filmmaker and/or Kamen Rider were curious to see how the grandfather of tokusatsu television would be updated. The final product ends up being more low-risk than Anno’s past projects, but Shin Kamen Rider is also one of his most heartfelt works to date.
Kamen Rider is certainly no stranger to reinvention. Despite the many entries in this long-running franchise, Anno goes back to the very beginning for Shin Kamen Rider’s story. Much like in the original TV series created by Shōtarō Ishinomori, the Kamen Rider seen here is a force of good with a dark origin. While Kamen Rider is now a fixture of Japanese television, the long-running franchise went off the air several times between 1971 and 2000. The longest break was in the ‘90s, but there wasn’t a complete drought; the brave hero lived on in a strand of standalone films.
The 1950s is widely regarded as Japan’s golden age of filmmaking, however the V-Cinema period helped save the industry during the country’s economic bubble. This revitalizing and distinct era of direct-to-video films, roughly taking place between ‘89 and ‘95, celebrated Kamen Rider’s twentieth anniversary with one of the bleakest entries: Makoto Tsuji’s Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue. While a severe departure from Shōtarō Ishinomori’s creation, this ‘92 film is aimed at fans of the original TV show. Since they were all older, it only made sense to age Kamen Rider’s story as well.

Nowadays, parody entertainment tends to get a bad reputation due to the excessive amount of atrocious spoof movies released, particularly out of Hollywood. Features that are painfully unfunny, merely cashing in on the success of what is popular then and simultaneously coming off as insulting, have almost become a cursed tradition in modern filmmaking. Sadly, a commendable art form such as tokusatsu entertainment has frequently fallen into this trap. Yet, if remarkable talents such as Mel Brooks have proven anything, it's that parody projects can be good. They can also come from a place of love of the material being reimagined for comedic effect. The internet has even seen its fair share of funny parodying of popular properties. A recent example is Yoko Higuchi's fun non-profit short film “Everydayman: A Fantasy Tokusatsu Parody.”
Yoko Higuchi is an independent filmmaker and cinephile, frequently active online, sharing his admiration for the art of filmmaking.

Director Hideaki Anno (Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman) is back this year with Shin Kamen Rider, the brand new live action reboot now playing in Japanese theaters.
A release here in the United States hasn’t yet been announced, but this week we’ve been provided with a 3-minute clip from the film that has damn sure whet our appetite.
In the clip, Kamen Rider absolutely decimates a group of bad guys doing bad guy things, crushing their heads and exploding their bodies like water balloons filled with blood.

The Japan Times writes in their mostly-positive review of Shin Kamen Rider, “It’s pretty silly stuff, and Anno embraces the 1970s-style camp to its hilt. This isn’t a parody, though: He’s having fun, not poking fun. The reverence for the material is evident.

Whoa!! This looks awesome. Toei Studios in Japan recently released another live-action take on a classic tokusatsu franchise - an update on Kamen Rider. The great Hideaki Anno (also of Shin Godzilla) directed Shin Kamen Rider, which is now playing in cinemas in Japan. We still don't know when it will play in the US, hopefully later this year. A man who was given unwanted power & became a non-human. A woman who questions the theory of happiness she was given. Takeru Hongo, transformed into an Augment with killing power by the hands of the Shocker, escapes under the guidance of Ruriko Midorikawa, who was born to the organization but rebelled against it. He is drawn into an epic battle with the assassins who are closing in. What is justice? What is evil? Is there an end to the exchange of violence? Starring Sôsuke Ikematsu as Hongo, with Minami Hamabe, Masami Nagasawa,...

"It's ready to blow your mind!" Let! Them! Fight! A Japanese trailer is out for an epic B-movie battle called Ninja vs. Shark, made by filmmaker / stunt expert Koichi Sakamoto. If you can believe, it isn't an Asylum creation, but an actual live-action movie from Japan. Set in the Edo period, the film is about a village that hires a ninja warrior to help them fight off evil sharks that are attacking pearl divers. That's pretty much all you need to know, other than that it will likely by pretty gnarly. Kohshu Hirano of "Ultraman Z" will play Kotaro, and Shun Nishime of "Kamen Rider Ghost" will play Shinsuke, who fights with Kotaro. Yuichi Nakamura plays Sameshiro. In addition, the heroine Sayo is played by Julia Nagano, while Kikuma, a female ninja who loves Kotaro, is played by Kanon Miyahara. This trailer is a bloody, gory first look at the film,...

Starting with Joko Anwar’s “Gundala”, Indonesia has been building its own superhero cinematic universe, in an effort that also seems to aim at creating a new star system within the country. Thus “The Legend of Gatotkaca” begins a new film series based on Satria Dewa, essentially introducing the character of Gatotkaca, who is not based on a comic but is a actually a character from the Mahabharata, while his story is interspersed with with elements from Indonesian mythology.

With the recent hit series “Kamen Rider Black Sun” and Hideaki Anno’s upcoming film, “Shin Kamen Rider,” Kamen Rider continues to flourish as one of Japan’s most popular and beloved tokusatsu characters. Created in the imaginative mind of manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, the franchise began in 1971 with a successful television and manga series; the rest is history. Since then, the insectoid motorcycle-riding superhero has been reimagined in countless ways throughout the years. While not as frequent as appearances in tv shows, the franchise has also seen its fair share of movies. With the upcoming theatrical release of “Shin Kamen Rider,” it’s fascinating to look back on how Ishinomori’s creation has been depicted in cinema throughout the years. Generally speaking, the character’s track record in the film has ranged from serviceable to lackluster. Some, like “Kamen Rider: The First,” is at best a passable viewing experience,...

Let’s appreciate Hideaki Anno so long as he’s with us. Less than a year since gifting us a fitting, fittingly head-spinning finale to his Evangelion saga, his Shin Ultraman—on which he holds screenwriting credit, directorial duties going to Shinji Higuchi, co-director of the great Shin Godzilla—has just debuted in Japan to fine notices. (The trailer sure promised something well beyond the scale of American blockbusters.) As of late he’s turned directing duties towards Shin Kamen Rider, a reboot of the ’70s series about a superhuman, motorcycle-riding hero who fights evil. Last year we learned a March 2023 debut was planned, and today a brief trailer promises that debut.

"Pacific Rim" remains one of Guillermo del Toro's best films, a love letter to anime and tokusatsu that recognizes the sheer joy in seeing giant robots punch giant monsters in the face. With references to everything from "Ultraman" and "Patlabor" to "Evangelion" and "Kamen Rider," the film is as exhilarating now as it was when it came out almost a decade ago. "Pacific Rim" is set in a world where giant monsters called Kaiju terrorize the planet. When missiles and nukes don't work, the only thing that can stop the Kaijus are giant robots known as Jaegers. But the Jaegers haven't helped much, and Kaiju...

Kamen Rider may not have the international recognition of Godzilla — yet. But Toei, whose first “Kamen Rider” live-action TV series aired in 1971, has announced an ambitious project for raising the profile of its motorbike-riding, insect-faced cyborg hero both at home and abroad on the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
Unveiled in April at a splashy live press conference in Tokyo, the project is headlined by a new film, “Shin Kamen Rider,” directed by Anno Hideaki, the creator of the Evangelion sci-fi franchise and the scriptwriter and co-director of the 2016 smash “Shin Godzilla.” Details about the film, including story and casting, are still sparse, though Toei has penciled in a March 2023 release date.
When Variety met project producer Shirakura Shin-chiro at Toei’s Tokyo headquarters, he reaffirmed that his aim was to make “entertainment that viewers can enjoy,” while “targeting a wide demographic.” This is hardly the first time Toei has courted...

Born of a merger between two film companies in 1951, Toei is one of Japan’s leading film producers, distributors and exhibitors, with a wide range of media businesses. Starting in the 1950s with samurai swashbucklers and continuing in the 1960s with actioners featuring Japan’s native gangsters, the yakuza, Toei gained a reputation as maker of entertainment for the masses, not the critics.
Rival Toho may have had Kurosawa Akira and Shochiku, Ozu Yasujiro — both world-class auteurs — but Toei had Ishii Teruo, whose “Abashiri Prison” action series (1965-’72) made a major star of the strong-but-silent Takakura Ken, and Fukasaku Kinji, whose “Battles Without Honor and Humanity” series (1973-’74) was a groundbreaking re-creation of a real-life yakuza war. Neither won many awards or much international recognition at the time, but their contributions helped make Toei a box office powerhouse. As the Godzilla vs. Kong Review: A Massive and Massively Tedious Brawl”>disappointing Godzilla vs. Kong arrives, there’s been a renewed discussion regarding the best recent monster movies and it’s hard to find a victor more worthy than Hideaki Anno’s 2016 Shin Godzilla. The director recently jumped back into animation with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, and as we await U.S. release details for that 2.5-hour sci-fi epic, he’s announced his next film.
He’ll be contributing to the long-running Kamen Rider series with a new film entitled Shin Kamen Rider, already set for a March 2023 release. First emerging as a television show 50 years ago this year, created by Shotaro Ishinomori, the series follows a superhuman, motorcycle-riding hero who battles villains.
According to Kotaku, Anno said that originally the plan was to release the film timed with the 50th anniversary, but there were delays, also due to the pandemic.

Candace Kita is a working actress who has been the newscaster, the judge, the doctor — and she’s been the sexy Asian babe, the masseuse, and the geisha. She’s faced producers who demanded that she adopt a cartoonish accent or lose the role. She’s dealt with presumptions that she has a kimono in her wardrobe, that she speaks Japanese, or Chinese, and that she wasn’t born in America. Although Kita believes things are changing in the industry, “Asian hate is not new, at all,” she said. “Maybe if there were more Asian people portrayed in a less stereotypical light, it would be different.”
As anti-Asian attacks and hate crimes escalate, there’s also been a call to re-examine the media’s role in creating Asian stereotypes. Most recently it’s been inflamed by politics, with Covid-19 described as “kung flu” by former President Trump and Fox News.

TV and film production in Japan shut down in early April in reaction to the coronavirus crisis. Since then the Japanese industry has been struggling to adapt to the new normal.
One of the first to pick up his camera — or rather his smartphone — was Shinichiro Ueda, the director of the smash zombie comedy “One Cut of the Dead.” Released on two Tokyo screens in June of 2018, the film went on to earn $29 million – or more than 1,000 times its $25,000 budget.
This April, Ueda reassembled the original cast members to reprise their characters for “Don’t Stop the Camera! Remote Operation!,” a comedy short now on YouTube. They remotely gather to help a beleaguered director (Takayuki Hamatsu), who battled zombies in “One Cut of the Dead,” put together a documentary.
Also quick to adapt was Shinji Higuchi, the co-director of the 2014 megahit “Shin Godzilla.” A longtime fan of kaiju (monsters), Higuchi launched “Kaiju Defeat Covid,...

No fear, no pain. After the original Kamen Rider dropped as part of the initial offering on TokuSHOUTsu, many fans wondered what would be next for the streaming service geared towards Japanese superheroes. Well, they finally have the answer.
Tweeting out a silhouette, TokuSHOUTsu revealed that “a new legend begins Friday. 7pm Et / 4pm Pt on @PlutoTV Ch 681 in Tech + Geek.”
That silhouette belongs to none other than Kamen Rider Kuuga! The first of what have been called the “Heisei Kamen Riders,” Kamen Rider Kuuga was the big return for the franchise after it mostly went dormant in the late 80’s (aside from a few movies in the 90’s.) Debuting in 2000, Kuuga kicked off a new generation of Riders that has lasted to this day and thus has a special place in the franchise.

During the Tokusatsu explosion of the 1970s, a variety of costumed superheroes and giant robots appeared across television screens in Japan, where kids were guaranteed several shows a week, detailing the exploits of their favorite heroes. From ‘Ultraman’ and ‘Kamen Rider’ to shows like ‘Spectreman,’ ‘Jumborg Ace’ and ‘Fireman,’ the shows were a staple of 1970s Japanese youth and have continued to this day with manys enjoying continued entries and a renewed fanbase. Director Junya Okabe, once one of the figureheads of Tsuburaya Studios, which produced so many of those shows, offers this new modern-day take on the subject matter which pits two of main heroes together in a new adventure.
