Stylishly Late
boblipton23 November 2010
Max Linder was arguably the greatest comic actor on the screen until Charlie Chaplin, who called him 'The Professor' came on the scene. In hundred of short subjects he generally played a Parisian boulevardier in some recognizable form.

In this one, he is courting Stacia Napierkowska, best remembered for her lead in the silent version of L'ATLANTIDE. But first he oversleeps and then he burns his shoes, so when he buys the pair off the feet of a cole-porteur, she is horrified by his lack of smart footwear, But Max always has a plan in mind and in this one-reeler, he gets off a very nice gag or three.

Max Sets the Fashion review

Max buys some boots from a workman when he accidentally burns his own shoes on his way to his wedding. A silly Linder comedy with a few weak laughs but no real inspiration.

I think this one is underrated.

This Max Linder film currently has an unimpressive rating of 5.7. I can't quite understand this, as it's one of his better short films from this period. However, very few people have actually voted for it and the public's unfamiliarity with him might explain the ratings. This is pretty sad, as in his day, Linder was the preeminent film comedian.

The film begins on the morning that Max is going to get married. He wakes up and gets ready--and accidentally sets his shoes on fire! On the way to the wedding, the scorched shoes start falling apart and he's in a bind. So, he pays the first guy he meets for his shoes--even though they are crappy old boots and are many sizes too big. At the wedding, the father of the bride is appalled by the shoes--and Max comes up with a very funny plan to get everyone to accept his horrible shoes. I'd say more--but you really have to see it for yourself.

The short is highly imaginative and Linder is at his best. What's not to like about this one? See it for yourself and see what I mean.

Charming and funny

This is a great Max Linder short film. Linder is absolutely terrific as the roguish but charming guy who always lands on his feet. The plot is really funny, with a bit of satiric flair regarding the upper class poshness. Plus, the final, and totally non narrative shot, with the two little kids in the big boot is delicious and hilarious.
