Jung: a movie that could have been nice
ijzeren_jan18 August 2009
The idea is promising enough. Police inspector Veer Chauhan's son is deadly ill, and the only person who can save him is Balli, an extremely dangerous criminal who was locked up in jail thanks to Chauhan's efforts. Initially, Balli refuses and even starts poking fun at Chauhan. After a while however, Balli pretends to have changed his mind, but seizes the opportunity to escape from the hospital and disappears. For his son to survive, Chauhan must find him quickly. However, his partner, "bad cop" Khan, is determined to find him first and "kill him in action".

Call it unlikely, but at least it makes for some good storytelling; worse cases of coincidence are perfectly normal in Bollywood movies. Besides, the DVD cover with Sanjay Dutt locked in chains looks more than promising. And indeed, the beginning of the movie has quite a few really good moments. Sanjay Dutt is terrifying in his role of a chained prisoner who pretty much resembles Dr. Hannibal Lecter. His friendly conversation with the boy, as well as his subsequent actions, make for some really good cinema. Enough to give me the goosebumps, anyway. But unfortunately, this is where it ends. I have never seen a potentially great movie derail to such an extent. After Balli's escape, we watch Chauhan and Khan constantly getting into each other's way, while Balli is making a quick career as a crime lord. And in no time Balli's character evolves from evil impersonated into a good-natured, Munna-Bhai styled kind of don who wouldn't hurt a fly. Shilpa Shetty and Raveena Tandon serve as attractive female decoration.

I would recommend watching this movie until the moment right after Balli's escape, as an unfinished masterpiece of some sort. In this first part of the movie, Sanjay Dutt is awesome, while Jackie Shroff does a decent job as inspector Chauhan. Anything that comes after that is nothing but a horrible mistake. If it is true that director Sanjay Gupta left the production half-way, than this must have been the moment. Believe me, the rest of the movie is not worth the effort of watching it even once.

Desperate Measures
silvan-desouza20 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Sanjay Gupta is one of the filmmakers who has been copying Hollywood films since his debut Aatish to many films, He and his then buddy Sanjay Dutt mostly worked together, In this film there was a tiff between Producer Satish Tandon and Gupta as the producer shot some unwanted scenes without the permission of the director and also wanted to rush this 2 year in making film to release to cash on Sanju's success post Vaastav. Sanjay Dutt supported his friend and refused to dub, the film was released with his dubbed voice. The film is a remake of Desperate Measures, it starts off routinely but gets interesting once Sanju and Jackie clash, Sanjay's introduction is superb, the first half works well mostly, though the director could sketch many characters in a better manner. The second half however deviates and suddenly more focus is given to Sanju and his gangways. Also suddenly 2 songs are shown on screen One being Ek Ladki which has only visuals of Sanju and Shilpa amidst Mayuri Kango dancing on the rain, giving an impression of being incompletely filmed, also Bali Di Gali having Bali Brahmabhatt suddenly makes an entry(maybe a decision after Sanju let go of the film). The climax is quite decent though it's not clear why Jackie has a change of heart

Direction by Gupta(who is credited only in the end credits) is decent but writing could be better Music by Anu Malik is good, Aila Re was a big hit that time and is good, Ek Ladki is a good song but oddly picturised The songs picturised on Jackie and Raveena were not even promoted and are okay

Sanjay Dutt repeats his gangster act, sadly the film released after the failure of Khauff and Baaghi both having him play gangsters and this too flopped, also his dubbed voice worsens his impact of his performance, Jackie Shroff who was not even shown in the promos is good in his role Raveena too was not promoted before the film but is good in her role Shilpa leaves a mark and does a good job, Aditya Panscholi gets a sketchy role but is superb as the encounter specialist cop who has a vague characterization. Navin Nischol, Saurabh Shukla are good, Neeraj Vohra annoys rest are okay

A Sanjay Dutt Show .....
shaikhirshad-412233 March 2024
Sanjay Gupta gets the script right this time but fails to execute properly. The entire movie runs on one man show and that is Sanjay Dutt single handedly saves the film from start to end.

First half was very good with complex storyline of a family who desperately needs to save his kid but the mess was made in the 2nd half where story suddenly shifted to gangstar drama from nowhere.

Screenplay is good but at some moments totally mid in 2nd half with unnecessary songs and too much stretched.

Character Performances are the only highlights of the film specially Sanjay, Shilpa, Aditya & Jackie superb performance by all of them.

One song is superb in the film rest of the music is just mess.

Overall a one time watch for Sanjay Dutt performances with the rest of the cast...

Junk

Jung is junk. One of the rare few films I've walked out of in a cinema. It's amazing what low technical values Sanjay Gupta films had prior to Kaante and Musafir. Technical values aside, it's also beyond my understanding how one of Bollywood's best writers - Anurag Kashyap - came up with a terrible plagiarised screenplay like this one.

Apparently, the film ran into some trouble with the producer and the director left the film midway. Which may explain why there are flashes of 'acceptable-to-good' shots here and there. The rest (maybe the bulk) of the film may have been 'directed' by the producer himself. I can't remember the music at all; all I remember about the songs are an aging Raveena Tandon and Jackie Shroff looking uncomfortable and ridiculous - sadly unbecoming, doing Grease moves in 2000.

For a mainstream Bollywood film the presentation is interesting
sliddar121310 August 2014
I can't understand the really bad reviews for this movie. I hope they have seen Kuch Kuch hota hai, jab tak hai jaan, bodyguard, om shanti om etc... At least I was able sit through this film unlike these other films.

OK this film has shoddy production values and editing is patchy at times. But the interesting storyline, bizarre direction, stylised action, music and acting make you sit through this one with interest. Aditya Panscholi deserves special mention, but is think it was a easy role for him to essay. Jackie was average, Sanjay Dutt was good but the role was tailor made for him.

Not a classic action flick, could have been much better, but still more entertaining than those other chick flicks I have named.

Raveena totally miscast
sexysukh527 June 2004
I'll tell you the truth I watched this movie for Raveena Tandon just to watch more of my favorite actress and watched a okay movie with it starring Sanjay Dutt Jackie Shroff and Shilpa Shetty the movie wasn't that bad. I would rather have seen Raveena in Shilpas role but you can't have everything. It's nice to watch while reading a book.

Okay fine the truth is this movie was not that good at all but its always good to watch anything that stars your favorite actor or actress right, well I think so anyway. 2 out of 10. If you have never watched Raveena before start with Mohra and move on to Aks next that way you know her when she is good before you watch her countless duds.
