WWE Royal Rumble 2006
wrestlingsitewebmaster12 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This Rumble was far lower than last years. Three of the matches were just awful and the whole 'Rey Mysterio winning' seemed just to be built out of Eddie Guerrero passing away and when WWE uses Eddie's name to make money out of it they are sick.

Results from the PPV:

Gregory Helms defeated Funaki to win the Cruiserweight Championship which also consisted of Kid Kash, Paul London, Nunzio and Jamie Noble in a very good match. The Boogeyman defeated John 'Bradshaw' Layfield in a terrible match (poor John). Rey Mysterio won the Royal Rumble last eliminating Randy Orton. John Cena defeated Edge to win the WWE Championship (Why even bother to have made Edge champion for 2 weeks?). Mickie James defeated Ashley in a p*ss poor match. Kurt Angle defeated Mark Henry to retain the Heavyweight Championship in a poor match.

Obviously The Rumble and The Cruiserweight match were the best matches on the card, but overall could have been MUCH BETTER!

Overall Grade - C+

Royal Rumble

Warning: Spoilers
Not an outstanding night, but i was very surprised at how the matches boiled out and the rumble winner left me thinking i was still sleeping. So once again wwe relies on shock value for the second pay per view running in order to be a success.

1. Cruiserweight Open. 8/10 Bar the Rumble this match was the best of the night, it was so good, great moves, great finishers and some high flying as well, top match and great way to start off the pay per view.

2. Boogeyman Vs JBL. 4/10 Wasn't really a "match" well what did you expect. It was more of a creepy segment with punch and kicks.

3. Ashley Vs Mickie James. REF - Trish 3/10 It started well for these two, Ashley looked better in ring but after 5 minutes it turned into a horror show, they got sloppy, Trish got bored, Ashley started getting booed because all she was doing was fake, and i mean FAKE! punching and kicking, it was that bad. Ashley needs work and fast!

4. Royal Rumble. 9/10 Quite a surprise to see this match 3rd on the card but at then end of the show it became clear why. It was a great rumble match as usual, a bit better then last year, mostly because i was so shocked Mysterio won, even though there were rumours he would, i didn't believe it, then when he was left with Orton i was sure Orton would win, but it was Rey!

5. John Cena Vs Edge WWE CHAMPIONSHIP. 6/10 Once again i was quite at surprise with the result, even though there were rumours Cena would win it back so soon, i just couldn't see it happening. The match was okay, considering they haven't worked together much it was okay but nothing special or to write home about. Great entrance from Cena and big pop for his victory.

6. Mark Henry Vs Kurt Angle WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. 5/10 Well it was Mark Henry and not even the great Angle could get a match out of him, plus this match was so predictable that i couldn't even be bothered to concentrate, saying that there was nothing special to concentrate on. The end of the match made it all too clear why the booking of the PPV was in such bizarre order, yes the once again boring lacklustre return of the Undertaker, i am getting so sick of this guy.

Overall a good night for shock value, plus the super cruiser weight match, the ending was very annoying, but not for Undertaker fans.

The best match is the opener!
gridoon7 May 2006
1) 6-Man Invitational for the Cruiserweight title. Kid Kash vs. Funaki vs. Jamie Noble vs. Paul London vs. Nunzio vs. Gregory Helms. A great choice for an opener. Fast-paced match with lots of high spots. ***

2) Mickie James vs. Ashley, with Trish as the special guest ref. A mediocre match. You get the feeling that Mickie would like to get more technical (nice single-leg boston crabs), but the match is pulled towards a catfight, probably to cover up the inexperience of Ashley. Don't get me wrong, though, Ashley is undeniably learning. **

3) JBL vs. The Boogeyman. What can I say about this? Awful, but at least short. *

4) The Royal Rumble Match. The middle part is kind of exhausting, but the beginning and the end, when the action can be followed more clearly, are very entertaining. The constant dedications to the memory of the late Eddie Guerrero are a matter of taste, though. Personally I find them distasteful. ***

5) Edge vs. John Cena (WWE title). An average match that offers something we haven't seen before: Cena getting out-wrestled most of the way, but coming out on top at the end! Who would have thought? **

6) Kurt Angle vs. Mark Henry (WH title). Before the match, Angle cuts a HILARIOUS promo ("Oh, and by the way....Mark Henry, YOU SUCK!"). The match itself tells an interesting story: Kurt realizes that he can't beat the World's Fattest - em, I mean Strongest - Man with sheer technique, so he has to resort to cheating tactics (chair shots, etc.). **1/2

After the match, the Undertaker appears and, with the help of some ridiculous pyrotechnics, makes the ring collapse.

not that bad

the royal rumble was pretty good. the cruiser weight match was nice which helms walked out as the winner. a nice 8out of 10 the Mickie James and Ashley match OK. a nice one won by Mickie James. 5out of 10 the royal rumble was nice and shocking. the winner was Rey mysterio a bit of a shock and sorta of un believable though. a nice 9out of 10 cena vs edge was an OK math i sorta knew that cena would win though but thats OK. 8 out 10 Kurt vs mark. pretty boring match but was well fought i knew that angle would win but that didn't ruin the match completely 5out of 10 all in the ppv was pretty good i wouldn't buy it though

Not bad but not too good
SteveDonnachie2002200122 March 2006
Royal Rumble 2006 will go down as a 50-50 pay per view. it had some good matches and bad matches.

1. Kid Kash vs Funaki vs Paul London vs Nunzio vs Jamie Noble vs Gregary Helms. Awesome match. It was kind of slow at first and it was shocking to see a Helms in a Smackdown match when he was on Raw. The match started getting good maybe 5 minutes into it. All 6 of these men continue to amaze fans with there fast and furious moves. The ending was a little disappointing. 5/10 2. JBL vs The Boogyman. Not a good match. Lets face it. I have said it once I will say it again. Just because you look like a great heel or a great face by image dosn't make you a great wrestler. Image is not everything. And these 2 men proved it. JBL did his usual punching and kicking and 1 move then back to punching and kicking. And the boogyman proved why he still has a long way to go. Why they put him in the match with a higher card wrestler is beyond me. Of course it was nice to see Gillan Hall who always looks great now that the mold came of her face. But this match was the worst on the card.2/10 3. Mickie James vs Ashley. Trish Stratus was the guest referee. This match was pointless. It made no sense as to why the womans title wasn't defended and why Trish wasn't wrestling on the card. Mickie James proved she is a great wrestler. A little better and more improved then Ashley who seemed really lost in this match. If you look real carefully you could see Trish mumbling instructions in this match to Ashley who was clearly not ready for a big match.3/10. 4. The Royal Rumble Match. Better then last years. Some new wrestlers were in it and some old ones that you never thought you would see again like Tatanka and Goldust. The ending was surprising and it was a little sad knowing that Rey Mysterio finally gets put into the main event picture because Eddie Guerrero passed away. But this Rumble match was OK. Of course we could have done without the Sprit Sqaud who interrupted the match before it started. 5. Edge vs John Cena. Not a bad match. Edge does his best to carry Cena through this match who amazingly did more then 1 move this time instead of his usual punching and kicking and doing his FU. Edge got great heat from the crowd. I was disappointed that Edge lost the title to Cena. Edge is clearly the better wrestler then Cena and why he didn't get to keep the title longer is beyond me. 7/10. 6. Kurt Angle vs Mark Henry. This match was OK. Kurt Angle did his best to carry the much heavier and slower Mark Henry who seemed tired out after 5 minutes. Mark Henry might be a great heel but this match was slow and kind of boring and surprisingly short. 5/10

Solid PPV To Watch
kliko4006 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This was a solid Royal Rumble PPV to begin with just like last year's Rumble as well.

WWE Cruiserweight Invitational Match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship Gregory Helms vs. Funaki vs. Kid Kash vs. Paul London vs. Jamie Noble vs. Nunzio 6/10: Good match of course with the cruiser-weight all in the ring battling it out, you'll know that it is a good match. Gregory Helms wins after pinning Funaki to capture his first WWE Cruiserweight Championship.

Mickie James vs. Ashley Special guest referee: Trish Stratus 3/10: Most Diva matches are boring like this one. Mickie James wins after getting Ashley in a roll-up & using the ropes for leverage.

JBL vs. Boogeyman 4/10: Pretty boring & sloppy, but it had enough effort for a match. Boogeyman wins after a Pump-Handle like slam finisher.

Royal Rumble match 8/10: This is the match of the night which featured new wrestlers as well participated in the Rumble. Mysterio wins after eliminating Orton last.

WWE Championship Edge vs. John Cena 7/10: Good match, probably the second best match of the night, great to see John Cena win after making Edge tap out to the STFU to capture his WWE Championship back.

World Heavyweight Championship Kurt Angle vs. Mark Henry 3/10: The worst match of the night & the worst main event ever. Angle wins after a chairshot on the head of Mark Henry then an Angle Slam.

Overall: Good PPV just like last year's, i'll give it 8/10 & B passable.

Rey Mysterio wins the Rumble
stitch_198114 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The WWE's 19th annual Royal Rumble event was truly atrocious. The event will only be remembered for one thing, Rey Mysterio's shock victory in the 30 man over the top rope battle royal. Whilst the Royal Rumble match itself was as entertaining as always the undercard, much like New Years Revolution a few weeks previous, was utterly dire.

The only notable happening from the undercard was Gregory Helms jumping ship from Raw to Smackdown when he won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship invitational.

Mickie James battling Ashley with Trish Stratus as the special guest referee would be a match best left for Raw. It had no place on one of the big four. The match was bad. Mickie won but I don't think anyone really cares.

JBL has been billed as the longest running WWE Champion in ten years. So why in the hell did he fall to The Boogeyman in such short time? This could have single handedly demolished JBL's credibility and heaven knows it took long enough for the fans to accept him in the first place.

Then came the Royal Rumble itself. Why it was so low down the card I do not know. Like I said earlier, an entertaining affair with Mysterio coming out on top after coming in at number 2 and going all the way. I still think it would have made more sense for Randy Orton to win the match but hell, what do I know. Triple H also put on a great performance coming in at number 1 and going to the final three. Another entertaining part of the match was Shawn Michaels being eliminated from behind by Shane McMahon.

The WWE Championship was on the line when Edge defended against John Cena. The match was average and nothing more. Cena won and thus making Edge the "Transitional Champion" he did not want to be known as. What a terrible first Championship reign for Edge. The only decent thing coming from it was his TLC match with Ric Flair on Raw.

And then the last match of the night. The good news? It involved Kurt Angle. The bad news? It also involved Mark Henry. Christ, I can't stand this useless waste of space. The match was terrible but still better than I expected. Angle won, which we all knew would happen anyway. As did the crowd in the American Airlines Arena, Miami Florida who started to filter out before the match had finished. This was a pity because they missed The Undertakers return at the end of the show to challenge Kurt Angle for the World Heavyweight Championship. The Dead Man demolished the ring with lighting bolts. Just a pity he hadn't done it before Mark Henry was due to wrestle.

One of the worse events I have ever watched in WWE history. One to avoid.

Best Royal Rumble Ever!!!
Boonader6 August 2007
I Love The Royal Rumble Of 2006. I Loved It So Much Because Royal Rumble Is My Fav Match Ever And Plus Rey Mysterio Won It And Hes One Of My Fav With Jeff Hardy. I Other Matches Were OK. John Cena Match Was Good Because He Won And I Hate Edge!!! And The JBl Match Was Not Good They Did Not Fight At All Of What I Can Remember. And Kurt Angle Match Was Good Because He Won I Hate Matt Henry!! Mickey James Match Was Stupid Because Ashley Lost!!! And That Was It That I Can Remember. And That Is Why I Liked The Royal Rumble Of Year 2006.

I Hope In The Next Royal Rumble Rey Mysterio Wins Again Or Jeff Hardy Wins!!!

Horrible.
michael-269411 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Royal Rumble 2006 was a horrible show. 2 good matches, 1 decent and the rest were horrible which I believe was 3.

Cruiserweight Open: This was a great way to open the show, a lot of high flying spots made it better. **1/4

Boogeyman vs JBL: Why is this on the card again. Just horrible. Luckily, kept short. DUD

Mickie James vs Ashley with Trish Stratus as Referee: Another horrible match. I wasn't in to it at all and the crowd wasn't either. Not hard to tell why though. DUD

Royal Rumble Match: Why is this in the middle again? Please explain. This was a decent match, nothing spectacular. This may have been the worst Royal Rumble Match ever though. **1/4

John Cena vs Edge: This was another decent match. This was the best match on the card though, but not too impressive. 10 minutes long wasn't so long though. Decent like I said. **1/4

Mark Henry vs Kurt Angle: Why is this the main event. This must have been the worse Main Event ever. *

Royal Rumble 2006 is a D.

At least it was different

Coming into the rumble i thought triple h would walk it i was pleased to see something unexpected but the blatant use of Eddies death in the story puts me off wrestling is nothing sacred to them. Gregory Helms looks to make the cruiser weight division credible and the womans storyline has got me interested for the first time ever. The boogeyman is a disgrace to wrestling. Randy orton fighting rey at no way out just completely cheapens the rumble. Last time Mark Henry was about he was awful what makes him number one contender that should have gone to mesterio who had been on a winning streak. The whole Mcmahan Micheals feud feels like a cheap stand in because Bret Hart refuses to do it Angle and Micheals are the only talents left in WWE and strangely enough the most entertaining is Vince and to top off a crap main event the ring collapsed and answered the question why the rumble was not last on the card.

Went just as expected. Not a good show
morantjavonte10 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Royal Rumble 2006 was the 19th annual Royal Rumble PPV event produced by the WWE. The show took place on January 29, 2006 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. Attendence was set at 16,000 with a buyrate of 585,000. This big PPV took place a few months after the tragic passing of the late-great Eddie Guerrero.

6 matches took place on the card including the traditional royal rumble with it's same rules. This PPV build up mainly centered focus on Rey Mysterio who made a promise to win it all for Eddie Guerrero. WWE were taking a big chance to have the smallest guy when the rumble. We also had 2 world title matches. To be honest, the card wasn't that intriguing.

The Good - Well, Rey Mysterio winning the rumble and receiving a push because of Eddie's death was questionable but looking back it didn't damage anything. It worked out pretty well. The royal rumble match itself was pretty good but not great. It started out slow, then went to getting a little interesting. It's last 10 entrants made it get good. Triple H and Rey Mysterio were two best Performers of the match. The opening of the Cruiserweight Championship 6 Pac match (dubbed something else) was also good. Helms winning went on to make a pretty good run as the champ.

The Meh - The WWE Championship match was above average. Cena beating Edge just 3 weeks after his first reign wasn't such a brilliant move by the bookers but Edge didn't get his career damage luckily. John Cena and Edge had much better matches later at the end. I also don't know how I exactly feel of the rumble not main eventing.

The Bad - The main event choice was poor. Mark Henry at this time was very limited and Kurt Angle unfortunately couldn't get him over in the match. You just never see bad matches with Kurt Angle. I said earlier rumble not main eventing was odd but it certainly would have been more better than this. I'd even accept Edge vs. John Cena over this main event. Also the Divas match and Boogeyman/JBL match were also terrible for PPV spots. Ashley Massaro wasn't ready at this time and the Boogeyman as entertaining as he was, also sucked in the ring. Last the crowd of this show wasn't that good. Not sure if it was just the card that bored them.

Overall - Not a good show at all. The show had a weak card on paper and it didn't exceed expectations. If one match on this show could have gotten a 4 star rating, I might have given this show more credit but unfortunately one of the weakest Royal Rumble PPVs.

Score - 4 out of 10: Boring

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time :

1. Kid Kash vs. Nunzio vs. Gregory Helms vs. Jamie Noble vs. Funaki vs. Paul London: WWE Cruiserweight Championship - 3/5

2. Mickie James vs. Ashley - 0/5

3. JBL vs. The Boogeyman - 0/5

4. 30-Man Royal Rumble Match - 3/5

5. John Cena vs. Edge: WWE Championship - 2.5/5

6. Mark Henry vs. Kurt Angle: World Heavyweight Championship - 1/5

Best Match - Royal Rumble Match

Worst Match - JBL vs. Boogeyman

Most Memorable Moment - Rey Mysterio's victory

Top 5 Performers

1. Rey Mysterio - Great Performance and his moment

2. Triple H - Great Performance

3. Randy Orton - Good Performance

4. John Cena - highlight of the night

5. Edge - This is random.

Thank God I only rented this
Twisted145 July 2007
I really feel sorry for anyone who bought this PPV or DVD. I don't understand how this can be worth $30 or so. It is really only worth $10. It is worth that much because of 2 matches, one of which (the opening match) was not listed on the back of the DVD case.

Match 1: 6-Man Cruiserweight Invitational. Now this is why I love cruiserweights. Fast-paced, exciting matches. This was no exception. With a few high-spots and some bumps this was a great opener. It would have been nice if it went for a little bit longer as it went for under 10 minutes. 9/10

Match 2: Mickie James vs. Ashley Massaro (Trish Stratus as Special Guest Referee). I was very happy when this match was over because it was extremely boring. The wrestling was awful, but I think it may have been one of Ashley's first matches so I will give her that. Not much else I can say. 3/10

Match 3: The Boogeyman vs. JBL. Well the Boogeyman's entrance is cool and then watching him eat some worms. That was about it for this match. At least it was nice and short. 3/10

Match 4: The Royal Rumble. I was quite surprised that this was mid-card instead of main event but it makes sense once you finish watching the whole PPV. Anyway, what can I say, it's a Royal Rumble, they are always exciting although mid-way through it does start to get a little bit boring but it picks up again. I did like the dedication to Eddie Guerrero but at times I felt that they were doing it a little too much. But still, great match, probably not the best Rumble. The only other Royal Rumble I have seen is 2005 and I believe that was better than this. 7/10

Match 5: Edge vs. John Cena. I expected a bit more from this match, but not too bad I suppose. It was decent. 6/10

Match 6:Kurt Angle vs. Mark Henry. Pretty Bad for a Main Event match. Should have had the Cruiserweights at Main Event but for some reason they are not Main Event Status even though they can put on a better match than a lot of other wrestlers. I like Kurt Angle though and I enjoy watching his technical wrestling but this match was far from his best and probably far from his average too. 4/10

After the Main Event match The Undertaker came out on a horse and cart. Awesome entrance for the Deadman. He then caused the ring to buckle and fall. It didn't look fantastic but it was pretty cool. I am a huge fan of Undertaker though, so only if you're a fan. I will give this segment 9/10.

Wow, the Undertaker segment was better than the whole Royal Rumble PPV (except for the opener). This is only worth renting and it's actually kind of sad that the WWE put out something like this. It looked very promising when you start watching but then it just turns to crap. It's too bad that the awesome set they used was wasted on this event.

The WWE has started off on a bad note in 2006. Thankfully it gets better.

Royal Rumble 2006 overall rating - 5/10
