More inconsistencies! And an apology to Bob Dylan...
Quinn407711 December 2021
Sorry Bob, the times are changing for no reason in this Season of this beloved show! Your lyrics should not have been alluded to.

No one has mentioned the Pen and Plow with Harriets Happenings in their lists of the inconsistencies! Harriet mentions it but the rest of the town is all well wow a printin' press in Walnut Grove!

Charles and Caroline were doing well! Why the permanent move to sell men's clothes? Does Ma come back?

Thank god for Willie and the Olsens in this last, unplanned season - and Mr. Edward's!

Can anyone else not stand Almonzo? I know the shows an adaptation of LIW's real life but he's a jerk. (Like Laura, I wasn't able to find a man who could rival my father...) Pa, he was a jerk as soon as she wouldn't marry him at 16 because you said so!

Now I'm just complaining about the season that wasn't meant to be - it really wasn't!

The show is changing, part 1
gregorycanfield11 February 2022
At the start of the episode, we briefly see Charles. He's about to leave for Iowa because, all of a sudden, he can no longer make a living in Walnut Grove. What happened to Caroline and the rest of his family? Why did everyone else have to "move on ahead"? Despite these baffling questions, I found myself a little taken with Laura. How did she suddenly get so pretty? I guess she matured in a positive way. As to this story, everything seemed gratuitous. We have the family that bought Charles' house. These characters become part of the show, based on simply on this premise. Then of course, we get the element of tragedy. Almanzo's brother comes to town, but all is not well. More exciting developments in Part 2.

Different show withe same title

Warning: Spoilers
If you're expecting the same quality as the first 8 seasons, think again. This is at least two notches below, and I am being generous. The script, story and acting is overly pretentious. It's like watching a play of people over acting their parts. If you can see beyond those flaws, it's better than no Little house... Anyway, a quick summary... Charles and family move to the big city so he can get gainful employment in a clothing store. Laura quits teaching to raise Rose. Zalzamo's brother "Royal" comes to town. But this time he's a widower and has a daughter. 2 seasons earlier, he had a wife and 2 boys. Anyway, he's in poor health and has yet to let everyone know the extent of his health problem. As for the new school teacher, her name is Miss Etta Plum, who is acted by Michael Landon's real daughter. That's the gist part 1 of the 2 parter. I left out some details, but theyre not important. The only saving grace of the series, the olssens and Mr Edwards are still in town. The friction between Mr. Edwards and Hariett Olssen is enough to keep me watching.

Lots of changes!
mitchrmp25 November 2013
This is the first episode of the final season of this beloved show! There are many changes in this season:

1. The Ingalls family moved away after a hard winter. They moved to the city...again...where Charles will work in a men's clothing store. I guess this time it sticks. He's had enough of farming. The only member of the family (besides Laura and Almanzo) that we see is Charles. He says goodbye to the beloved house, his daughter, and all his friends.

2. A new school teacher has arrived to replace Laura, who has to quit in order to devote more time to her daughter. Etta Plum, played by Leslie Landon, will be the school teacher this short season.

3. Royal comes to visit Laura and Almanzo. We met a Royal in Season 7 when Laura and Almanzo took care of the two boys. Apparently that episode was forgotten since this brother has a daughter and no wife. The living arrangements and family dynamics will change forever. Royal reveals a secret at the end of this episode that will make it so.

4. A new family has moved into the Ingalls Family and will have lots of stories and air time devoted to them. Jon and Sara Carter have two boys: Jeb and Jason.

Yep, it's lots of changes for Little House! Incidentally, Season Nine was not supposed to happen. Popular demand brought the show back for one shortened season. The changed dynamics of the show, however, killed it for good.

Changes, but inconsistencies too
tymedindin-775181 April 2020
Very enjoyable, but I was annoyed by the inconsistency with Almanzo's brother Royal. In the season 7 episode 14, "The Nephews", Royal was married with 2 rambunctious sons, and a child on the way; they visited Almanzo and Laura, leaving their boys with them to wreak havoc. However in this episode he is an ailing widower with a daughter, and hadn't seen Almanzo for 10 years. The addition of the Carter family was a real treat, and seeing the continued maturity of Willie Oleson in stark contrast with his sister Nancy was refreshing compared to the unified brattiness he shared with Nellie.

Moving On and Moving In...
ExplorerDS678925 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Spring 1887- Times being what they were, Charles had been left with no alternative but to sell the little house and relocate the family to Bur Oak, Iowa. The new owners were a blacksmith, John Carter, his wife Sarah, and their two boys Jeb and Jason. It was a very emotional time for Charles Ingalls, having to leave the house he'd built for his family and whom he watched grow up in it. He'd come to gather up the last of the family's belongings before heading out, and he and Laura share one more emotional moment together before heading back to Laura's house for Charles' big farewell party. All his friends were there and they gave him a fine new suit to wear on his new job in the city. The next day, Laura officially turned over her blackboard to a newcomer into the community and recently certified schoolteacher Etta Plum. See, work and home was getting to be too much for Laura to juggle, so she had to sacrifice one to fulfill the other, but she would always be there for students in need of homework help. So, after sending Willie to the corner one last time, for old time's sake (at his request), Laura bid her class a tearful goodbye. At home, Almanzo brings good news: his brother Royal is coming out with his little girl, Jenny. According to "The Nephews", didn't Royal have twin boys? And what does Manly mean by ten years? They visited in Season 7...Maybe it's a different Royal? Anyway, ecstatic about the impending visit, Almanzo builds them a guest room in only 3 days. Talk about ingenuity! Seems Royal had been giving some thought to moving out to Walnut Grove permanently, and as for Jenny, she was quickly enrolled at school. With all these changes going on, the one thing that sadly hasn't changed is Mrs. Oleson, who drops in on Sarah Carter who's just starting her new printing press. Harriet regaled her with her past venture known as 'Harriet's Happenings' (fifth season) and tries to get her own gossip column in Sarah's paper, which she quickly declined, in favor of posting actual news. Harriet opted to do the weather forecasts, and would somehow slip her gossip column in there somehow, and she thought she succeeded, submitting her weather/gossip column, which Sarah actually did print...minus the gossip, infuriating Harriet. As for bratty Nancy, she takes an immediate dislike to Jenny on the basis of she's good looking. This could cause trouble; Royal's health slowly deteriorated since his arrival. Doc Baker was summoned when he suffered a nasty heart attack one morning. It seems Royal was dying and he was aware of it. He had a very special favor to ask of Almanzo and Laura, and it involved Jenny...

Very emotional Little House episode, I must say. As you know, this was the first episode to be under the gauntlet of Little House: A New Beginning, and it does the transition very well. It was nice to see Michael Landon as a series regular one last time, and he will be back for a few more episodes down the line; we are also introduced to new characters in the series. Now living in the Ingalls' house: Stan Ivar as John, Pamela Roylance as Sarah, Lindsay Kennedy as Jeb and David Friedman as Jason, all fit in very well. Leslie Landon joins as Etta Plum, and Shannen Doherty (pre-scandal) as Jenny Wilder. All welcomed additions to the cast. New characters generate fresh new story lines, even though Season 9 does contain a few rehashes; Now this season was different from the others as it tended to turn its focus more on the citizens of Walnut Grove as opposed to just the Ingalls family. Enjoy Part I of this magnificent saga, though keep the Kleenex handy, and stay tuned for Part II!

The beginning of the end
LaverneandShirleysucks5 October 2021
Charles and Caroline pack up their things and leave Walnut Grove because times are hard which doesn't make much sense because the restaurant Caroline worked at (which even bore her name) was doing good business. And I believe she was still getting 50% of the profits since the Oleson's put her name on the front.

Charles always worked at the mill and made enough to support his family there but suddenly that wasn't enough anymore I guess. Bumping Ma and Pa off the show was a huge loss. And inserting the Carter family in their place, and house was blasphemy.

I didn't like any of those people and never accepted them. From the wannabe Charles and Caroline Ingalls to their kids who were male versions of Mary and Laura. They were all impostors as far as i'm concerned.

Then we have Almanzo's niece Jenny Wilder who was supposed to be the new Laura Ingalls I guess because she sported the same pigtails Laura wore in her early years and had many similar spats with that horrible wretch Nancy who was supposed to be the new Nellie but was way too monstorous and hateful for me to ever accept. Jenny was no Laura and Nancy was no Nellie...just two more impostors of Walnut Grove.

Too many beloved characters were gone at this point that the essence of the show had gone with them. Whenever this season comes around on television, I tune out until the series starts all over again.

I'm giving it 4 stars only for keeping beloved favorites like Laura & Almanzo and Mr. & Mrs. Oleson and Willie...who by the way was only a couple of years behind Nellie, but strangely still going to school. I guess he was left back a bunch of times by Miss Beadle....another beloved character who was long gone by this point.
