Here's a typical life cycle for a movie that isn't a megabudget blockbuster from a major studio. Everyone talks about it before it comes out, it releases, then radio silence hits. Every now and then something may blip up about it, but for the most part it's quiet until 10, 20 years later when people start rediscovering it and celebrating big anniversaries. It happens to pretty much every movie, no matter how great they are. And that's kind of bogus. That's why we think it's pretty awesome that the UK art house Black Dragon Press isn't waiting 10 or 20 years to celebrate the fantastic Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Taika Waititi's indie adventure comedy turns a year old this week, and so to celebrate it Black Dragon teamed up with artist George...

Koan Hui—former man Friday to Hong Kong maestro Tsui Hark and co-writer of Tsui’s Time And Tide and The Blade—makes his directing debut with League Of Gods, a 3-D extravaganza of canted angles and composited whooshes that luxuriates in an unreality unknown in Hollywood outside of the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer. It may not have an ending or even a climax. It may not have dialogue that rises above the level of “So, Nine-Tail Fox isn’t the biggest threat! Actually, it was the Black Dragon!” or characters who emote in anything other than evil, heroic, or lovelorn stares. But it has an old man who turns into a towel and many giant animals and a six-armed baby who flies around on a jet of his own highly pressurized piss, ripping crab-people in half with his seismic waves of flatulence. That counts for something.

On December 18th, the new 50th anniversary restoration of Jean-Luc Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou will open at the Film Forum in New York.
The new 50th anniversary restoration of Jean-Luc Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou opens Friday December 18 at Film Forum in New York City! Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo), unhappily married and recently fired from his job, abandons his family and runs off to the Riviera with the enigmatic Marianne (Anna Karina). Ferdinand, whom Marianne calls “Pierrot,” tries to find artistic fulfillment between bouts of criminal adventure, but keeps getting entangled in Marianne’s violent life.
It will be interesting to see how a new Blu-ray will be handled here in the states, since the Criterion edition is out of print (and going for high prices).

Film about the ghosts of Cambodia’s past submitted to the Academy Awards.
The Last Reel, directed by Sotho Kulikar, has been submitted by the Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee (Cosc) for the Best Foreign-Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards.
The film debuted at the Tokyo International Film Festival last year, where Kulikar won The Spirit of Asia Award from the Japan Foundation Asia Centre.
It also won the Black Dragon Audience Award at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.
Speaking about the submission, Sotho said: “I am extremely proud to represent Cambodia, the Cambodian people and the Cambodian film industry at the 88th Oscars.
“This film was made by Cambodians with a Cambodian audience in mind, but the themes are universal and it has been embraced around the world, as well as here at home.
“I love my country and an award for The Last Reel is an award for Cambodia.”

No avid gamers could deny that nostalgia shaped the industry’s summer announcements and releases. Sony made rumors a reality thanks to an official Final Fantasy VII remake trailer; The Coalition earned brownie points with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which pleased fans with its remastered features; and the upcoming Lego Dimensions wrings childhood memories from Back to the Future, Scooby-Doo, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, plus a dozen more films and television series. Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist carves out a piece of that sentimental pie as well, though the skin-and-bones presentation undermines the card game and anime’s spirit.
Four campaigns (and one duel from Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-v) present Legacy of the Duelist’s primary appeal: reliving classic battles from the original anime and its spinoffs. That includes Duelist Kingdom’s debut, Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal’s ridiculous climax, and every iteration in between. Can you overcome Maximillion Pegasus and his Thousand-Eyes Restrict?...

Not too long ago, Black Dragon Press released the first installment in a series of licensed alternative movie posters celebrating the work of cult director Andrei Tarkovsky by artists Edward Kinsella and Victo Ngai. These illustrations beautifully capture the sense of awe and beauty in Tarkovsky’s work, and are easily some of the most beautiful posters I’ve seen released this year. Check out the posters below.
Andrei Rublev by Edward Kinsella
Andrei Rublev by Andrei Tarkovsky is dark, bleak, vast, and quiet. It’s about oppression, corruption, war, and death. It’s about an artist finding his way through an oppressive world and all the trials he faces along the way. There was so much material to draw from for this poster. What I aimed to create was a powerful/quiet image of Andrei Rublev, trapped, but still moving, through a suffocating forest.” – Edward Kinsella

It's more violent than a kebab shop after the pubs kick out, and has caused more controversy than Katie Hopkins on an episode of This Morning. It's spawned a couple of movies, a TV show, comic books, techno albums and card games. It is, of course, Mortal Kombat.

Welcome back to This is Our Design. Looking for a long podcast this week? Well, you’re in luck. It turns out that when a show fast-forwards three years and introduces Richard Armitage as the Red Dragon, there are a few things to talk about. Just a few…All of those things, though, get addressed in full by co-hosts Kate Kulzick and Sean Colletti with the help of Les Chappell, of The Av Club and your very own Sound On Sight. Start off with you appetizer, “Hannibal by the Numbers,” before the groups kicks off the discussion with thoughts on adaptation, moving right along to the Red Dragon himself and what his presence means for Will and Hannibal. Stick around for your weekly dose of “Kate’s Classical Corner” and “The Devil in the Details,” which we know you’re addicted to. We’d tell you to stop, but we kind of like it.

Warner Bros. Interactive has revealed their next batch of Dlc for Mortal Kombat X which brings an all new fighter to the game, along with some new (technically old) skin packs, and some Free fatalities for everyone to enjoy. Come inside to learn more and check out Tremor in action!
Unsure who Tremor is? Don't worry, you're probably not alone. The character has only appeared in Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, a game that even die hard fans of the franchise consider to be the worst in the series, and best left forgotten. Even so, Netherrealm is digging deep into their lore to flesh out the already impressive Mortal Kombat X roster, so Tremor will finally be a fully playable character. If you had told me prior to 2011 that I would still be fully anticipating the release of the next chapter in the Mortal Kombat saga, I would have called you crazy. Once a favorite of mine back in its early days, this was a franchise that considerably fell off after the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis era. Hell, the best game to be based around the property following the release of MK3 is a beat-em ‘up spinoff. Perhaps sensing they needed to do something in order to sway public opinion, Ed Boon and the team at NetherRealm Studios went back to the drawing board for the next entry.
Enter Mortal Kombat 9, which not only brought the series to the last console generation, but also fully rebooted the franchise. Focusing primarily on the first three entries in the series, the reboot was able to make the story of the series engaging...

Vienna-based award-winning illustrator Peter Diamond recently released these beautiful alternative book covers for Richard Adams’ classic Watership Down, produced under license from Nepenthe Productions. The release consists of two editions: the Ni-Frith (Sun Regular) version is a 9 colour 18×35 screenprint from an edition of 150 and is available now from the Black Dragon Press shop.
The Fu Inlé (Moon Variant) version is a 9 colour 18×35 screenprint with metallics from an edition of only 50. As it is, a low run went on sale March 12th.
Peter Diamond had this to say about the prints:
“When I read Watership Down some years ago I already had dim, bloody memories of the 1978 animated adaptation, so I wasn’t shocked by the violence in the book as I expect many were who read it unprepared. But what I hadn’t expected was the thick, dark vein of fear that runs through the story from the very beginning.

The first Dlc for Dark Souls II, Crown of the Sunken King, has probably landed by the time you read this, and accompanying it is a huge update that fixes and tweaks a massive range of features.
You can see the full list below (and it's some list), but highlights include a limit to the amount of souls a player can earn whilst fighting invaders, and the removal of healing abilities during any form of PvP, a common annoyance for those who follow Dark Souls' community created honour system of no healing during a fight.
A good portion of the update deals with balancing, making changes to weapons damage, armour effectiveness, and spells. Some items have been changed too, such as the very handy Gower's Ring of Protection, which has been weakened,...

John Rambo was first introduced to cinema audiences in 1982’s First Blood, based on David Morrell’s novel of the same name. Sylvester Stallone starred as a Rambo, a mentally scared war veteran, clearly suffering from undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder. His fractured mental state, along with a spate of bad luck, leads him to ultimately commit acts of unacceptable violence.
It is a film with no real heroes, a deep mistrust of authority, and a supporting character who dies of cancer because of extended exposure to Agent Orange. It is not, what you would call, a barrel of laughs.
So of course, they made a kid’s cartoon of it.

I don’t know about you, but E3 got me Super stoked to slap Mortal Kombat X into my PS4 next year! In my excitement I went back and watched one of the few video game movies that actually encompasses the feel of the original material. That movie? You guessed it, New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat! Well, despite having a lot of input from original game creators Ed Boon and John Tobias, there are a few things in the film that aren’t quite canon, so here is my list of the five biggest things they did differently than the original storyline for the games. I am not including parts from the rebooted timeline, however, since the movie wasn’t based on that timeline. (Also, we’re only gonna talk about the first Mortal Kombat movie, because Annihilation got so much wrong this article would have to be printed in hardback…...

The Udine Far East Festival Audience Prize, the Golden Mulberry, was awarded to Lee Won-suk's Korean comedy How To Use Guys With Secret Tips, which our own Pierce Conran said rises admirably above its title. The surreal, pulpy morality tale from Thailand, Countdown, took home second prize and Ip Man - The Final Fight received third. The Black Dragon, voted on by attendees with a special Black Dragon accreditation, went to Chang Jung-chi's lyrical, inspiring Touch of the Light. And, in internet-land, the web-based jury of MYmovies awarded their prize to Miki Satoshi's eccentric It's Me, It's Me! I'll be following up in the near future with one more belated review from the festival, but in the meantime, congratulations to all of the winners!...

This is my top 10 favorite kickers in Kung Fu cinema. It is just my personal opinion as there are many great performers out there with amazing ability also. I hope everyone likes my top 10 and please feel free to leave comments at the bottom of the page.
10.Jean Claude Van Damme
Jean Claude is one of the best kickers i have seen out of the Asian movie market. His jumping spin kicks are brilliant, hitting with speed and power, which would take anyone’s head off. Van Damme was also a former member of the Belgium Team that won the European Championships in 1979 in Brussels.
Some of Van Dammes best kicking skills can be watched in movies such as No Retreat, No Surrender, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Double Impact, The Quest and so on. He recently starred as the main villain in The Expendables 2, which he did a great job,...

"Clash of Clans" has been dominating the Top-Grossing charts on the App Store for quite awhile, and the free-to-play PvP title got it's first update of the year on Thursday. The update does away with the winter theme and items, but introduces a new resource, Hero characters, new defenses and more.
The biggest change version in version 3.3 has to be the the introduction of Dark Elixir and Hero characters -- the Barbarian King and Archer Queen. Unlike your standard-issue troops these Heroes will never die, instead only resting to fight again after a period of time. Heroes start on level 1 and can be upgraded all the way to level 30. They also have the ability to attack or defend. Unfortunately, Heroes take up valuable space in your village rather than chilling out in the army camps you already have.

50 years ago (from the present time in game), Black Dragon appeared in the once peaceful land of Altera. Under the order of the King, the young Geraint, Argenta, Velskud and other legendary heroes assembled various forces to form the Dragon Slaying Alliance. This incident was widely referred as the First Dragon Invasion by the generations to come. However, what exactly happen during this incident? Where are these heroes after the dragon invasion? The movie will reveal the story and mysteries behind this epic historical event.

The downloadable follow-up to the classic brawler series is on the way to Xbla and Psn in September.
Details and pricing after the jump.
The tongue-in-cheek Neon will be hitting Psn on September 11th and September 12th on Xbla for $9.99/800 Msp respectively from developer WayForward Technologies and publisher Majesco.
Neon is WayForward's comic-action homage to the 80's, according to their original announcement of the game, featuring music, fashion, and visuals that would have been right at home during Double Dragon's 1987 release.
From the original synopsis:
Taking place in a hyper-saturated omniverse, players beat up baddies across earth and beyond against the Black Dragon Clan’s most nefarious leader yet-- the supernatural scourge Skullmageddon. You could go it alone, but why wouldn’t you want to grab a buddy and take your game to the next level with drop-in, drop-out online ‘Bro-Op'?!

Today on Kevin Tancharoen's twitter account, many hungry fans were treated to some minor tidbits of scenes we can expect to see in the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot! The scenes involve Jax, Kabal, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. A Jax vs. Kabal fight? Sounds like it to me! If in case it did not load here's what it says: Jax- "Playtime's over" Kabal- "Captain Briggs" (looks around) Note: One of them is covered in blood. No confirmation on who. Next up we have the ninjas! (With a hint of spite in his voice) Scorpion- "Sub-Zero..." Sub-zero nods, then gets to work So my fellow CBMers, what do you all think? Excited to finally see the age old rivalry between Scorpion and Subzero play out on the big screen? How about Jax battling Kabal and possibly the Black Dragon Clan? Let me know in the usual place!

Return to an era where two tough guys in sleeveless jackets could go on a journey of discovery, violence.
Apparently '87 was a good year to debut games that would later become beloved series. Final Fantasy, Contra, Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Street Fighter all made their first appearances that year, along with today's subject of the current remake craze, Double Dragon.
Developer WayForward Technologies is an old hand now putting new spins on classic games, working on the Wii-make of A Boy and His Blob along with Contra 4 back in '07. The devs are promising that Double Dragon Neon isn't going to be strictly a straight-up remake, and will instead be a "WayForward’s love letter to the decade that spawned the franchise - the music, the style, and culture of the 80’s pulse through the nucleus of Double Dragon: Neon." Asian action movies set in modern day usually fall into one of two categories. They’re either loaded with bone breaking, skin slapping, fist pumping fight scenes, or they’re chock full of bullet ballets, armed standoffs, and gun fights. Jackie Chan and Donny Yen fit in the former category while the latter is home to the work of Johnnie To and others. There’s some crossover here and there, but for the most part the films seem content to focus on one action style or the other. Vietnamese director Le Thanh Son chose to ignore that memo for his debut and has instead filled Clash (aka Bay Rong) with an equal amount of blisteringly fast fist fights and flesh shredding gunfights. This is a good thing. He also chose to let his characters talk a bit too much. This is a bad thing. Trinh (Veronica Ngo) is a mercenary who works for a mobster named Black Dragon...

Revolver Entertainment are back and although they’re on the rise, they’re still allowed to release some damp squibs and yes Clash is one of these damp thingys. It seems that the Asian film market has discovered health and safety and while the West attempts to make its martial arts look more brutal on film, the East seem to over choreograph and instead of fighting their opponents they look like they’re dancing with them in a carefully rehearsed routine. It’s not fighting and I’ve noticed it in a lot of releases recently.

I have a problem with Johnny Tri Nguyen. In the last few years, Nguyen has gone from martial arts second banana in Cradle 2 the Grave to leading man with his recent feature, Vietnamese action flick, The Rebel. The problem is that in the mean time he keeps getting stuck in those secondary villain roles, most recently in Tom Yum Goong and Power Kids. Those films are both very entertaining if a bit messy, however, it really hasn't given him much of an opportunity to spread his acting wings. Clash gives him a good start in that direction, and that is only one of several reasons it is worth watching.
The newest of the recent small crop of Vietnamese flicks making noise is Bay Rong (Clash), which features Nguyen in the lead role as Tiger. Returning to his side for Clash is his co-star from The Rebel, Thanh Van (Veronica) Ngo as Phoenix,...
