Good doc on piracy and all, but its a lot of talking!
Basismedlem21 June 2007
There is a lot of interviews with industry people from Canada, mainly from the movie and music companies and also some lawyers. IMO there is a lot of talking, and a little bit focus on how piracy is done, what is the distribution like and where can you buy it - focus on programs. It has a little bit of that, but mainly talk with industry people...

One interesting viewpoint is that of Kristoff, a group member from a release group in 'the scene' - who talks about how it works and who gets the new stuff (movie/music etc.) first when it gets released/ripped. Nice thing to have him comment on the sort of underground stuff, that is going on and his viewpoint on piracy et. all. In the doc he has been replaced by an actor, talking like him. But hey, could have been cool if they had found aXXo and got an interview with him!

All in all this doc is worth the time, though sometimes it can be a little longish with all the talking and all. But hey, you can download it for free so why complain?

quite a lame documentary

Interesting subject, but quite a lame documentary. It pivots mainly around music, leaving software and movies completely in the dark. Main themes evolve around the judicial debate, but why not tackle this from a more philosophical (moral for instance) or cultural point of view ? Also from a technological point of view it declines to bring any interesting revelations. And what up with the disgusting musac layered all the time into the interviews ? It completely turns your attention away from the subject and gives you the impression of watching some cheap promotional video you might encounter on a late night tell-sell channel.

Interesting work. It touched on the many different angles of Piracy

As documentary goes, this one is good. I find myself not able to look away as soon as it starts. The views within this documentary cover from the music and film industries, to artists, to radio stations, to movie theaters, and to the many other individuals, who all claim a stake in piracy.

One particular thing I like is how it doesn't paint a one sided picture about the said topic. Every point of view has a counter by another party each with its own logic, at the end all amounts to a very complete picture on piracy. Much more so than what other medias have been drilling us with in the past.

The only reason I didn't score it higher was that there were a lot of cuts within some of the interviews, those were done in a way that made it seemed choppy at times.

This being the first crack at full length production by the director goes to show what Canadian talents can offer. And the type of licensing agreements and the way of distributions chosen make this documentary a statement of its own in the piracy and file sharing debate.
