The show's in safe hands.

Question was always going to be, how could the show possibly last without Amanda Burton, after all she was Silent Witness, Death by Water was a very good story, very clever, pretty dark, definitely intriguing. The story was devised to introduce conflict between Harry and Leo, and it certainly had that, with the pair clashing at each stage. We got a glimpse of how the show would have been if Anton Lesser had taken the reigns, loathsome as a character, but a wonderful actor.

I thought the writing was very good, such a clever storyline, but the departure of Burton left a large hole, fortunately Emilia Fox was waiting in the winds.

Pretty good. 7/10

It will survive and thrive

Warning: Spoilers
This clever episode confirms that Silent Witness can survive without the brilliant Amanda Burton and is in the very good hands of "Leo and Harry" with Emilia Fox ready to sparkle in her role as Nicki, who appears temporarily in their morgue to work on ancient bones but quickly becomes a solid member of the team.

Paddling Upstream!

The forensics once again get down to details and anomalies. Harry and Leo are at odds a good deal of time. Harry, especially, seems to be very thin skinned. On of the givens is that there is upward mobility in the force, and these guys are on the track. What we have here is a search for a chemical agent in the water that could have become airborne and done damage. A big time expert is so full of himself, he refuses to take even the slightest step forward in investigating things. Also, there is a big company that breaks down old ships for their metals and the possibility of a voided contract. Nice transitional episode.

Excellent

My husband has been 'box setting' Silent Witness but I've not watched many episodes because I didn't like the Sam Ryan character. I found her extremely annoying. However, I was intrigued by the storyline of this particular episode and found I thoroughly enjoyed the interplay between the two main characters, showing that finding the cause of public health issues isn't always cut and dried. I shall now continue with the series until the stories become more about the characters rather than the pathology.

Quick correction

Warning: Spoilers
The plot outline at the top of the page for this episode mentions a train crash, as does the synopsis shown further down. These are both showing here incorrectly - they belong with the episode after next "Body 21". The reviews and cast details are all correct and apply, as they should, to the second part of Death by Water.

Watching this episode in a re-run where both parts had been fused into one feature length piece, it's quite hard to know where the original part two began. Sometimes with Silent Witness it is quite obvious, but not here. Assuming the break came with the baby's death then...

Anton Lesser's character, in what really turns out to be the B plot, is awful and unfortunately probably true to life. There do sometimes seem to be all too many people willing to believe the worst of a woman whose baby has died. However, our heroes save the day, mostly. Not sure the child's father feels that much better - hope he gets some help!

The conclusion of the main story is pretty exciting to be honest. Other events do turn out to be connected and there's a bit of a mad dash at the end to prevent further loss of life. One more casualty though, someone whose actions probably save lots of other people.

It was surprisingly tense, waiting for Leo to get the top job, despite this show being very old now and KNOWING he does get it! Maybe that's a me thing, lol.

Despite, for my preference, rather too much squabbling between Leo and Harry, this is a good solid episode and shows that Silent Witness was - is - going to be just fine without Sam.
