That song they played.
bierme220 November 2019
Is it Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman? I think it was also played in the NYC nightclub scene in Pearl Harbor.

That song

Yes, it is 'Sing, Sing, Sing'.

It was a signature tune for Benny Goodman, eighty years ago, during the 1940's.

I think it had Gene Krupka on drums.

There is a better description on Wikipedia.I

A few musical errors but overall well done
musman-8900325 November 2020
Being a former Army officer once assigned to the US Armed Forces School of Music at Little Creek, I wondered if NCIS ever did an episode involving the school or military musicians. Did not have to go far back to find "Musical Chairs". Quite interesting. Starts off with an impromptu performance of "Sing, Sing, Sing" . I won't go into details of the episode itself but the NCIS team was not fully aware of Navy musicians or music in general, with Nick being corrected about an instrument being the piccolo and not the flute. Another scene has Palmer stating he never knew the Navy had a band. Sorry, Palmer - Navy bands have existed since 1845, and the oldest of the military services, the US Marine Corps Band (The President's Own), was established in 1798. Nick was correct in stating that "Anchors Aweigh" was composed for a Navy-Army football game, in 1906. The episode, again without going into details, did do a nice rendition of the Navy hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong To Save". Overall, even though it was about Navy musicians, I found it to be well-done and I appreciate the fact that the cast and crew of NCIS consider musicians just as important to all aspects of the military as the other specialties. The only reason I did not give this episode a "10" - the Navy's most elite musical organization is, of course, The United States Navy Band.

Great episode

I've never missed an episode and this one was a really good one. The cast is as brilliant as always and the mystery was intriguing and drama filled.

Can't name that tune the band plays. Thought it might be Artie Shaw?

The woman playing the drums
mwin-136691 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Does anyone know the name of the woman playing the drums? (In the opening scene with her drumsticks against the handlebar in the bus, and in the tribute concert scene at the end of the episode she opens the song). She is very talented and also very beautiful! Thank you!

Btw, maybe anyone knows this: The U.S. Navy does have a real band, several in fact, why weren't any of them used?

That's what kept me from rating 10 stars... using the real band would have added a little more.... authenticity, for lack of a better word (cant quite describe my feeling, i just think i'd have liked it even more with the "real" navy band....)

Cheers all!

So many mistakes it made me cringe
treblocj14 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As a musician I could not stand this episode. A few of the mistakes:
  • a professional clarinet player would never use a 2 strength reed. I start 5th graders on a 2.5.
  • a professional would never only have one reed in their case. They would have several that they worked on to make perfect for themselves.
  • the keyboard in the apartment wasn't plugged in.
  • They French horn players were using mellophones which are only used for marching band and would not be used by a professional indoors.
  • the flugelhorn player played a note with only the third valve. Unless he is trilling a high A he would not use that fingering.
  • how we would a musician not notice their case was 10 lbs heavier? They have been carrying instruments since they were 12.
  • finally non music related rhodium has a melting point of 3567 degrees F. How did that guy melt it and form it to the exact shape of all those cases?

This is just lazy writing when they don't bother to consult one band performer before they finalize the script.

A bit stupid
harrykivi1 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was really impressed with "No Vacancy", the case was full of solid twists and turns. "Musical Chairs" on the other hand, kind of disappointed me. It's not an awful episode, just a bit frustrating.

Let's start with the good aspects.

. The production values of the episode are great. "Musical Chairs" is well-directed, the music adds to the scenery (especially liked to see the band performing) and the acting is mostly good.

. The setup for the mystery is intriguing. There are a couple of fine twists here and I did enjoy the subplot about Sloane's daughter.

But...

. The case feels left in the background with not a lot of time dedicated to it. There aren't enough interesting suspects and too many moments were spent on the Navy band. Parts of the mystery got a tad too silly and the solution was not that surprising either.

Overall, an okay episode.

5/10 HK.

Musical Chairs
bobcobb3013 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If the show wants to tease something deep with the characters they need to devote a lot of time to it. You can't give Maria Bello's character a few minutes and expect it to work and connect with fans.

Just a mediocre episode all-around.

more crap

Wilmer valderama ruins yet another episode .. he thinks he has all the answers but never offers them to the team or jethro because he's affraid of being caught out ... self absorbed, arrogant and downright stupid, hoping he gets killed off.
