A smashing episode.

How appropriate having watched Dunkirk the movie the day before watching this episode for the first time. I always enjoy Father Brown, but this one was definitely one of the better written stories, very much on a bigger scale. The historical Dunkirk element certainly enhanced the story. A great tale of deceit and betrayal, so many great elements, Sid's lack of a military background, Lady Felicia's previous involvement with The Colonel, the fascinating mix of The Army, Church and Police all having to work together under one roof.

A particularly good episode, 9/10

A story about cowardice, cover up and treachery. Father Brown and Lady Felicia visit the local barracks for the unveiling of the Dunkirk war memorial.

Colonel St Clare was feted as a hero for killing several Nazis with his broken sword however a drunken Major Rawlings publicly accuses St Clare of cowardice. Rawlings is later found dead.

Father Brown believes St Clare is innocent but needs to uncover what really happened at Dunkirk fifteen years earlier which involves murder and sending men out to be slaughtered.

A nice little mystery with several suspects and red herrings. There is some tension Between Sid and an army officer who believes Sid has shirked his duties to do national service. They actually face off to a challenge. The actor playing St Clare was rather wooden though.

Warning: Spoilers
The Sign of the Broken Sword is a very, very serious episode of Father Brown that's for sure. It reminds me of the war movies where the past comes back to haunt the present because of war and the fog thereof.

Anyway, one of the actors in this episode looks like Alexander Armstrong that's for sure. Anyway, I kind of expected Ben Miller to pop up in a cameo but not to be.

Anyway, I'm catching up on Father Brown and also episodes of Magnum, P. I. (the original one) and Law and Order (the original one). So here Father Brown always gets the criminal and this one is quite sad with the fog of war and all.

A solid episode in the Father Brown saga. It was interesting, not he best episode of all time but enjoyed by me. I do like Sid he's a funny character indeed, the lock picking scene was brilliant.
