Space jam
mandy-5001126 August 2018
While this was a fun episode to watch, someone should have pointed out that the team in Space Jam was the Toon Team not the Tune Team. One competitor spelled it wrong on every cake and it was frustrating that no one caught it.

Like Cakes-can't stand judges
malikbear2 April 2024
I love baking cakes and love this show but not anymore. I cannot stand those two judges and find them very BIASED against Black Cake contestants. I realize that some didn't work up to par and should have been eliminated. One cake in mind is the Shark cake, that guy should have won. His cake tasted good, and his design was on point. They chose the cake that was dark and didn't taste as good from another contestant.

Those two judges are just awful to the contestants. They very seldom have a positive comment to the contestants, especially the black ones. I like Johnathan a lot, he is so funny!!!

Love the show needs to kick waylynn off
mkalexiou21 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this show except for Waylynn. She in my opinion is by far the most judgemental person. She comes off as extremely rude and never gives the bakers support. All she does is give them dirty, worried looks like their cake isn't going to look good or there doing something wrong. I wish they would get a different judge. I also can't stand the fact that the judges walk around and talk to them because they always say their not going to finish yet they keep distracting them.

Love the show! Not so much the judges and host
windygirl-1416130 January 2021
I love this show almost as much as I love Cupcake Wars. (I sure wish Food Network would bring it back!) Waylynn and Richard are not enjoyable judges to watch or listen to. I'm sure Waylynn is a nice person and doesn't intend to come off the way she does but it is painful to watch her judge. She is often so discouraging and critical. I am sitting here watching a rerun of an episode. Waylynn just told a contestant that their cake "is just as unappealing and unappetizing on the inside and it is on the outside." Wow - It isn't fun to watch someone get crushed. Richard Ruskell comes off as a complete jerk. It's hard to enjoy the show when I spend a major portion of it feeling sorry for the contestants. The host is annoying. He tries to hard to be goofy and quirky but it is too forced and the judges don't "play along". It's so awkward. If he would just be cheerful it would be a thousand times better. -- Cake Wars should take its cues from Sugar Rush. Candace Nelson is a perfect judge. So kind and encouraging even when she has to give negative comments. The host is fun but not overly so. He's friendly and has a good rapport with the judges.

FOOD NETWORK - Please listen to the reviews! We've been telling you for years. Get kinder judges and tell Justin to tone it down or get a someone else.

I like the cakes/ I hate the judges
pbandjelly915 June 2019
The idea for the show is awesome, I love the baking and cake competition shows. However, these judges are jerks. They only have negetive things to say, I'm always shocked when they have a positive comment. The walk around making people feel bad about their work in the middle of everything, and then tear them down at the end. It's awful, not supportive, soul crushing judging.

Thanks for the background audio while I do other stuff
Pastel_loca1 June 2019
And oh yeah, the cakes vary in quality, but it is a game show about baking with a set and consistent time limit so it's (kinda) reasonable for some cakes not being in good quality most of the time compared to examples of the contestants more professional work while they introduce themselves

Regular judges ruin the show for me!
wallobx29 January 2019
The two regular judges are way too judgemental for the time constraints. I believe high standards and perfection are certainly the goal. However the two regular judges are way beyond too critical. The walk around in the 2nd round is unnecessary.

Great Fun and Mouth-watering delights!
ggarfole10 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am a 49 year old man, and I enjoy this show, a lot! First of all, I can't see where other reviewers are so tough on the host, Jonathon Bennett. He's high energy, granted, and would probably be better suited for a kid's show on Nickelodeon, but he works for this genre, also. Since we are talking about cakes here, and cakes usually are intended for kids (or kids at heart) outside of a wedding setting, a fun, out going host fits the bill (See the Willy Wonka episode, for instance).

And the Judges, Ron Ben-Israel and Waylann Lucas are industry veterans and their opinions and judgments are fair and unbiased. They will clearly tell a contestant if they felt the contestant played it safe and should of took chances, or if they clearly didn't like a cake's taste or appearance. They pull no punches. The guest judge is a nice touch, because it's usually a person directly related to the theme being presented (IE: Lego's Marketing Director on the Lego episode) and can give a BIASED opinion, in this case.

My 12 year old daughter and I, binge watch this show! We pick who we like in the first round and cheer them on like a sporting event! Great, clean, family fun. The only thing that detracts from the show (and I mean, the only thing) is that Waylann uses the word, Whimsical", in just about every episode (but, even that is fun, because my daughter and I take bets on when she's going to drop the Whimsical!) Highly recommend this show for a magical and whimsical time with the kids.

Waylynn
karenerolfes7 February 2020
I can't stand the women judge Waylynn. I have seen some great cakes and she's always got to say something smart to say (not in a good way) the show would be so much better without her. Just get rid of her!!!!

Surprisingly fun!
hjalsayegh27 May 2016
Cake boss was (please not the past tense here) a guilty pleasure of mine. Thing is, compared to other shows what was created wasn't as epic as all the drama going on.

In cake wars it's the other way around, the focus is the both the cakes and the unique structures being created. Season one had a bit of a shaky start BUT from then on it's impressive designs and mouth watering cakes from then on.

The series is light hearted, well edited and most importantly interesting. would recommend as a binge watch... just watch what you eat during that time, your waistline will not like it!!!

If you haven't got anything nice to say...
veenboerbas23 February 2020
Then don't say anything at all and that's exactly what Waylynn Lucas should do. I've never met before a more judgmental judge than her in any other show. Same goes for mr. Bowtie and his always sourpuss face by the way. I'd like to see them being contestants on this show and creating one of these enormous cakes in ridiculously small amounts of time. I'd bet they would be voted off in the first round!

Jonathan Bennett, although nice to look at, is just annoying and acting like he's hosting some sort of ridiculous game show. He'd come off a lot better just standing there quietly.

All in all, nice concept but very poorly executed.

Jonathan Bennett is amazing
jacnalex6 December 2021
He brings such comedy and weirdness to the show in a good way. The judges are awesome I just wish the contestants would take their suggestions. But sometimes they do and sometimes they don't but hey that's why I love this show.

Sincerely Chuck.

The Judges Are Insufferable
pendingburge4 December 2019
The title says it all. I can't stand it when they tear apart beautifully made cakes because "there's too much detail" or "they don't understand the story" then award simple and boring cakes the title of winner. Can you imagine if people actually used that to critique other types of art? "Sorry, Pieter Brugal, your painting is beautiful and all, but Icarus is kind of hard for me to spot and it feels like there's a lot of focus on the other characters in the painting and I personally just don't get it."

Also, I'm just saying, if a judge came up to me and they were like, "Oh, that cake might not work because there's a chance it could collapse. I wonder what you're gonna do because you've already spent half this time making it and now you've only got two hours so you probably don't have time to make another one. Anyways good luck." I do believe I would show them my cake from a different perspective via slamming their head into it.

2 of the Judges Do NOT Have The Right To Judge!
ashketchumsatoshi20 February 2022
Honestly the only judge who is nice and actually gives good critiques is Ron Ben-Israel. And he is literally a MASTER pastry chef, yet he's still nice and gives many many compliments. He makes beautiful beautiful cakes. However, the other two judges (Waylynn Lucas and Richard Ruskell (an EXECUTIVE pastry chef) have NO right to judge!! The cakes they actually take A LOT OF TIME to make look AWFUL!! Some of the ugliest cakes I've honestly ever seen (especially Waylynn's.) Also I've noticed that they are both really really mean to the contestants and for some reason Waylynn is only mean when Richard is there. When Ron is there she acts all nice. 🙄 She's obviously just a follower and gives me mean-girl vibes. Also while I love to see the cakes, the host is super super obnoxious and tries too hard to be funny. He is so loud and sometimes too much to handle. Aside from that, I saw a few comments say Ron was mean. I do not know how. He's actually very nice and gives good critiques on flavors and fondant-work, whereas the other judges give insults even when the cake looks perfectly normal and beautiful.

Judges are insufferable!!
jdau-3999719 July 2020
I love to watch baking shows, but unfortunately I had to stop watching this one. One of the judges, Waelynn has absolutely nothing nice to say! She makes rude comments to every single contestant and shows her disgust with the faces she makes. The judges ruined this show for me.

Horrible Judges - Negative, Rude and condescending
cdenys7 November 2020
These cakes have to be made in a ridiculously short amount of time with weird ingredients; and these bakers bring us some amazing cakes.

These judges are just snarky, they make stupid faces (Waylynn Lucas), offer no helpful criticism, and are very difficult to watch. During their mid-episode walk around their goal seems to be to discourage and demotivate the bakers.

Get rid of these snobs!

Let's see the Judges compete!!!
laurajsawyer22 January 2021
As a cake maker I'd like to defend those who have participated in the war. The time given to complete the challenge is not enough and for the judges to expect a squeaky clean pristine piece is ridiculous to say the least! I'd love to see Food Network put the judges at "war" under the same restrictions given and have the real cake makers critique their work! I bet they'd FAIL to produce the product they expect from participants not to mention people would see their lack of performance and skill. We see Buddy and Duff showcase their talents all the time. When will we see the talents that the judges have? To me its not enough to say they are skilled. SHOW US!! Anyone can own a bakery and hire to get the work done. I've watched this show since the beginning and would love to see the tasks allowed more time to show the artists they really are.

Warning: Spoilers
I would rate this show so much higher Waylynn is always negative with it seems like every cake... I would love to go to her business and see how well she cooks something gluten free. I really started disliking the show when the judges started going to visit the contestants during their challenge and putting them down making them more nervous and adding to their pressure. I watch the kids baking wars and maybe they should take a lesson from Duff and Val on being positive. I also think it is so wrong that they make those bakers carry their cakes to the podium they work so hard and a couple of episodes the bakers have dropped their cake.. Its a shame and they should think of a better strategy.. I agree the show would be much better with out Waylynn.

Worst Host And Judges EVER!!!!
leeknaus30 April 2019
The host makes me cringe. He isn't funny and he completely clashes with this type of show. The judges are cold and so critical. They offer nothing to the contestants other than weird faces and arrogance. Their comments even contradict themselves from one minute to the next. And the female judge has started dressing so trashy that I wonder if she remembers what kind of show she is on. Psssst..... close your legs when wearing a dress or skirt. We loved the show when it was more about the contestants and their baking abilities but stopped watching it due to the attitudes of the host and judges.

The "Cake Wars" episodes are interesting to watch, but
afraker-2574315 December 2015
not quite laid out for the safety conditions of it's contestants on the show, and the different teams competing. There are tremendous amount of detailed work from all of the different contenders that goes into their displays, and it is quite awe inspiring to watch this on TV. On the other hand, it can get overwhelming to watch because sometimes a contestant can get badly injured, forcing the injured to stay in the game. Nevertheless, the teams are pressured into building the best displays to the best of their abilities to come out on top. I think that when the judges put a certain time period on the teams to get their displays finished is a bad idea. I also think safety is key, and more time is needed for the teams to finish their displays without anyone getting hurt. The teams feel rushed, and more often, the contestants will push hard enough to help get a themed display done, that the're not paying attention to safety.

Obnoxious
darkdementress11 December 2019
The host is the most loud and annoying person ever! The judges are rude and it's patethtic! A good judge should be able to give constructive criticism that explains what's wrong not just "it's terrible do better.." the overall watchability of this show is not good. The cakes are amazing but the show sucks.

Judges are so incredibly RUDE
tsisson12 September 2021
When the two judges, Waylon and the new male judge (not Ben-Israel) walk around while the contestants are still working on their final cakes-they are way too rude!!! If you give them four hours-don't expect a perfect cake at the 2 hour mark!!! They've obviously never heard of being kind 😡

Ruined by the host?
teaguemcmartin17 October 2016
To be honest, with a good host the basic format of this show would limit it to being a 6 rating, 7 at best. Ron Ben Israel is extremely affable. As a judge, I enjoy watching him. Waylynn Lucas is...telegenic. Jonathan Bennett is simply annoying. The judges never play off of his energy. Because of this, his bad puns drop like a rock and his excessive energy makes him look obnoxious. He constantly ends up looking like that guy at the party that thinks he's hilarious but is also well intentioned enough that nobody wants to tell him he isn't. If the judges were more extroverted and quirky, he might work. This isn't their fault though. As the host it's his job to play off them. A few years ago I might've said "it's a reality baking show, what can you expect?" But having watched 'The Great British Baking Show'I know they can actually be quite engaging. The judging criteria could be improved, the contestants could be vetted better, Waylynn Lucas could be more endearing and the format could be more original. However, the awkward energy of the host and his poorly timed puns are what ultimately sink this show.

Cringeworthy judges
stearnslindsaya7 January 2021
This is cake wars- it's supposed to be a fun show and the judges (waylynn, Richard Ruskell and Ron Ben-Israel) are just horribly mean. It is really difficult to watch. One of the comments Waylynn actually said to a baker was, "I have trouble believing this is what you actually do for a living!" The host, participants and guest judges are the only good parts of the show. Food network is better than this...
