Line from George Thorogood song.
jmontal1-64-71861830 March 2021
Really enjoyed the movie, it held my attention throughout. There was one line in the movie where the character Chad went looking for a place to stay and the exchange between him and his buddy was straight out of a George Thorogood song "House Rent Blues/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,1977. It went "Can I stay here. Naw man, you know my wife, she's kinda funny. Yeah I know, you funny too. Anybody else notice that?

Refreshingly HONEST when so few movies ARE.
While it moved a bit slow for me, the acting was good and the plot was very interesting and well rounded. I found it very interesting AND ENTERTAINING and a great story, though based on tragedy...It seems the more meaningful stories are. It's a western: doesn't require all the "bells and whistles" of many other types of stories told. Most refreshing and down to earth. Kudos to the author and the screenplay for translating the book to the screen; a challenge within itself!

Into the slow
grillsgt4724 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a slow moving movie about a down and out cowboy that is pretty predictable. There are some plot holes (spoiler) the old cowboy is shot and manages to shoot his attacker in a gunfight. He, although severely wounded heads off on his horse and the next thing we see, the movie is wrapping up as he shows up, fit as a fiddle with a prized horse to claim his sweetheart. How did he get from a remote site in the desert mountains of Nevada with a hole in his chest, to the girlfriend's ranch, what did the Nevada police do about a double shooting with a fatality? We'll never know. The story is supposed to be based on a true story and book. I guess, like usual, the book will be much better than the movie.

"We're all going to get better."
classicsoncall24 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not for one minute am I buying the romance that developed between Henry McBride (John Diehl) and ranch owner Jessie King (Jean Louisa Kelly). The age disparity was one thing, but the back stories of both individuals would have precluded any sort of meaningful relationship. In real life, the age difference between the actors is about twenty years, so it's not totally out of the question, but given the circumstances in the story, not likely.

Like a lot of pictures I've seen lately, much of what occurs in the story takes place in dimly lit or downright dark surroundings where you really can't see what's going on. I get it that certain situations call for atmosphere, but how about letting us see what's going on. Like the scene where Chad (Benjamin Ashbrook) seeks his revenge on Jessie. A rape is implied I think, but the film cuts away before making it definitive. Same thing when Henry has his showdown with Chad near the finale. The full impact is missed because it's hard to see.

There's also a groan inducing moment in the picture when Chad seeks out a buddy for a place to stay. The scriptwriters think they're clever by cribbing a line from a George Thorogood song, as the buddy says he can't stay because his wife is funny that way. If you're familiar with the tune, you'll know Chad's response - "Now you're funny too"!

Nice story but told badly
mleestu-5770123 May 2021
It was nice story but the acting (especially Chad) was just bad, as was the directing. Some missteps should have been re-shot. Often times clunky.

And what has Henry doing for the prior 17 years?

It's Not For Sale.
wandernn1-81-6832741 December 2022
This movie is a nice little yarn about an old broken down cowboy in the modern day who gets a little bit of redemption and recovery through sobriety. It's just a good story. Decently acted by all those involved. It is nothing super special. No surprises, no amazing moments.

Well shot film. 7/10.

And IMDB has now made it so a review has to have 600 characters before it can be entered. I really don't expect that to last very long because people are sure to complain about it. But until that happens I guess we have to expect reviews to be long winded and sometimes about absolutely nothing to do with the show in question.

Diehl made this movie great.
dfsheehy-430487 March 2021
One of my favorite modern day Cowboy movies ever. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Well written. Diehl knocked it out of the park. This was his signature role.

It Got Cringy
bogave10 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This story took such a weird turn. The young ranch owner kept saying how the old man reminded her of her deceased dad. I thought surely, with a 35 yr age difference, they're not gonna get together! The fabric store owner would have been a perfect match... so yes, I thought the romance was quite cringy due to the obvious age difference. Basically Jesse was either totally miscast, or the writers should have found another romantic interst for him.

Disappointed - * Spoilers*
alonate16 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm very suspicious of the reviews here. The movie definitely doesn't deserve the 10s I'm seeing here. The movie is half baked. The actors were fine, but the direction, story, pacing and editing were atrocious.

When the character Jessica gets viciously attacked by the disgruntled ex-ranxh hand, Henry finds him and and punches him a couple times and tell him to get out out of town and never come back. Really that's it? WTF. This isn't the real wild west. Law enforcement should have been involved. The movie was vague whether Jessica was sexually assaulted during the attack. Whether she was or wasn't, Henry should have called an ambulance or driven her to a hospital. Instead he takes her inside and nurses her back to health by bringing her meals by the bed side. Insane. She gets all better and acts like nothing happened. Afterwards, Henry and bad guy have it out, and they ended up shooting each other out in the middle of nowhere. Bad guy presumably dies, and old man Henry has a massive upper chest gun shot wound. The scene immediately after the encounter shows Henry going back to the ranch and living happily ever after with Jessica. Lame. It probably would have taken a very long time to heal from that blast, but Henry us walking and moving around like he had stopped that bullet like Super Man. Also, wouldn't you think there would be a lengthy police investigation regarding the killing? Nope nothing. Just doesn't make any sense. Oh well. I did like the leads even though the age difference is glaring.

Real cowboy roots showing through for John. Loved him in Miami Vice and always an underrated actor. This one has so much heart.

Sloooowww
benfunu-7102812 December 2021
It needs more movie and less soft guitar music. It seems the screenwriter just kept adding to the story and music to fill out a certain time slot. Then again, I'm forced to use a 150 letters to post this review when it can be done in less than 40.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Well played. Just one of those movies that reaches down into your soul and reminds you that there can always be redemption if you accept it.

Could have been a real winner
Harbour1841 July 2022
While this isn't the worst western movie I've seen, it had so much potential to be great...and failed....the worst failure was the lighting...it was horrible..viewers couldn't make out some parts of the plot because everything in the scene was way too dark! The plot was good and the main actors, especially the actress that played Jessie, were believable except for the obvious age difference. The direction was nothing great, too many long lapses between the action...the best part of the movie were the horses....with all this being said, it was entertaining BUT it had the potential to be so much better!

Very good
jesbeard3 July 2021
Good movies make you care about what is happening in the story and to the charecters. This movie succeeds with that at a very high level. The acting, story-telling, shooting, editing and direction are all strong. This is probably the best movie I have seen that I had never before heard of.

Disppointing
mdrinkwine10 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Where to start? If you watch the trailer and think, this looks cheesy, but I might still like it, think again. It could've been a good story, but a lot of it was just done poorly. The pacing was poor, the acting delivery didn't do much for the writing. The writing wasn't great. The actress playing Jessie was the most believable. The romance was not believable. The others giving great reviews look like padding to me. A lot of suspicious padding.

Started out strong and then fell apart
john-338903 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The character building, backstory, all excellent. Had me totally engaged. Then it seemed like the movie budget ran out and they needed to wrap it up quick so things started jumping and the flow just stopped. I still liked the movie but the transition around the time he had to go back to pay off the debt is where it lost me.

I live less then 10 miles from Cowboy Trails. I've hiked all over blue diamond hills and Red rock area. My favorite horse at Cowboy Trails was a lineback dun they had. I loved watching horses and making photos of them.

Was ok, but we fast-forwarded through parts
jordan224014 April 2021
Age-old story of a troubled person seeking some kind of solace. Wasn't horrible, but was comically over-dramatic in parts, and some scenes transitioned to others with no real explanation of how they got there. We were interested enough to want to know how it ended, but fast-forwarded past the slower parts to get there, and didn't miss anything significant as far as we could tell. Acting was very good for the most part. Probably wouldn't recommend, but it wouldn't be the worst movie you'd ever see.
