"Vesper": What were you doing when you were seventeen?
jtncsmistad28 July 2017
"Vesper" is a nifty little oddball short about who killed whom among a lover's triangle and the not so sweet hereafter. It features performances from Götz Otto ("Schindler's List", "Tomorrow Never Dies") and Agnès Godey, a dead ringer for veteran actress Diane Ladd, Laura Dern's mom. The start to finish music bed is unsettling and ominous, and will be an especially familiar dramatic device for all fans of TV's "Law & Order".

But here's the coolest thing about it. Writer/Director/Co-Star Keyvan Sheikhalishahi is nineteen. He was eighteen when he made "Vesper". He was seventeen when he penned the script for it.

Kid's got a future in show biz.

When I was seventeen I washed one mean dish for "Steak 'n Shake", buddy.

Impressive thriller, especially from a 17 year old!
trinaboice2 December 2017
Director Keyvan Sheikhalishahi has a bright future ahead of him. He's talented and already receiving praise for his work.

His thriller is interesting and well done. He had a compelling story to tell and did it in a creative way. The expression on the man's face in the end leaves the viewer with even more questions and offers a fascinating twist on the story. I love twists!

I'd love to see more work from this young director! Great job!

A creepy short film
eddie_baggins9 August 2017
A tightly-wound psychological thriller that will keep you guessing even after the credits have rolled, Vesper is an above average short film that would be appealing to any cinephile that likes their films to arrive packed with ominous mood and ever-present tension.

Screening at festival's in London and Santa Monica, Vesper focuses on Agnes Godey's middle-aged woman Marge and her near blind nephew Christian (played by the film's director Keyvan Sheikhalishahi) as the two work together to put a stop to what appears to be a violent ex-partner of Marge in the form of Cloud Atlas and Tomorrow Never Dies actor Götz Otto's Walter, Vesper over the space of 23 minutes creates an at once low-key set-up that then turns into something else entirely as we become aware that not all is as it seems.

Directed by at the time 18 year old filmmaker Sheikhalishahi, Vesper ends up dealing with some rather heavy topics after Christian has an eventful encounter with Walter on a wind-swept beachfront. It's not entirely easy to follow but Sheikhalishahi shows promise with narrative construction and an eye for an atmospheric shot as we're introduced to the convoluted world of Marge and her haunting's relating to past decisions.

It's never an easy task establishing the tone of a film in such a short time but Sheikhalishahi does an admirable job of delivering some heavy topics into a short runtime with solid support from his actors that is highlighted by a fine turn from Otto who brings some serious creepiness to his brief but important role of Walter, a closing shot featuring the menacing presence will get the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention.

Final Say –

To say much more about Vesper and its plot would ruin story set-ups and while Sheikhalishahi's film does show itself at times to be a little rough around the edges, there's enough here to suggest a bright future for the young filmmaker and Vesper is a solid short film that thriller/mystery fans should certainly endeavour to track down.

Vesper is the type of film which reminds you of when the story was the focus of mysteries and thrillers versus jump scares.

Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer: I was given a link by writer/director/ and actor Keyvan Sheikhalishahi to see this movie.

Summary

Marge (Agnès Godey) is haunted by her past. Of which two men seem to be the main things keeping her up at night. One being her ex, who claims she ruined his life, Walter (Götz Otto) and the other being her nephew Christian (Keyvan Sheikhalishahi). Someone who comes to her home because Marge fears for her life. But, in the end, we are led to question whether Christian can do anything at all for his dear aunt.

Highlights

It Puts You On The Hunt As Soon As It Begins

No sooner than you begin the movie do you know something is off. That Marge isn't telling us the full story and she can't be relied on for the truth. And with that cast limited to three people, it makes it so every move and interaction you scrutinize. "Is this person telling the truth?" "Is this person real?" "Am I overthinking things?"

Making it so the film calls for you to watch it with someone to theorize and talk throughout. Then, once it is over, question whether you were presented with more misdirection or if what you saw was the absolute truth.

On The Fence

You Have To Give It Some Leeway To Really Enjoy It

This is the 2nd film of writer/director/ and actor Keyvan Sheikhalishahi and I think that has to be taken into consideration. Both in terms of the positive, him getting a film like this done and also the negative, which is that the writing and performances aren't without criticism. For example, as interesting as the mystery is, I couldn't say the characters are a driving force behind it. If I was to forego the leniency being given since this is a short, much less an indie movie, I would come down on this hard.

The reason? All the characters are kind of forgettable and a touch generic. Marge is a shut-in with regrets, who we never see leave the house. Walter is a man who feels jilted and haunts Marge like a ghostly figure and Christian is like Casper the Friendly Ghost. Just without any type of personality which makes you wonder if he is dead.

Overall: Mixed (Home Viewing)

The main reason I'm labeling Vesper mixed is because it pushes you to give excuses. There is this desire to note Vesper is a short and an indie, alongside writer/director/ and actor Keyvan Sheikhalishahi still gaining experience. However, even with the need to excuse some things in mind, I would still give it to Sheikhalishahi for the tone is well set and the story does lead you to wanna play detective.

Leaving Vesper ultimately feeling like an "on the job learning" type of film. One which, for those privileged enough to know about Sheikhalishahi, you'll get to see a young talent grow from something with the potential to, one day, become a fully realized auteur. Someone who may be what the movie industry needs to return thrillers, maybe even the horror genre, to its glory days where, between goosebumps and scrutiny, you actually felt engaged by the film and not just waiting for jump scares.

Stars in your multitudes
Horst_In_Translation7 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Stars" is a 2017 short film that runs for a bit over 20 minutes and was written and directed by Keyvan Sheikhalishahi, who was still really young at this point, actually still is today. It is his second effort as a filmmaker and as with his first short film, he also acts in here. But the big name from the cast is of course Götz Otto, a former Bond Antagonist with a career that spans over decades. And for me as a German it was particularly nice to see him here as I believe there is more to him aside the physical component and he also has some solid range as he shows us here. Female lead Agnès Godey I must admit I am not familiar with. She plays her role fairly well though too. It is a little family drama with some thriller and mystery elements and fairly entertaining and interesting to watch from start to finish, even if there aren't really any truly great stand-out moments. The director here was still under the age of 20 when he made this one, so there is definitely some promise present for the future. I also liked his take on atmosphere here, one of the more memorable components from this film. Overall, a good watch for everybody who likes Otto as much as I do and I want to add that I liked the indoor scenes more than the outdoor scenes. The element of fear from a claustrophobic perspective despite the big impact by stars (but only on pictures, not on the sky) adds more quality to the film. Overall, a solid watch and I give it a thumbs-up. Worth checking out.

Amazing short film
michili11 June 2017
I had the chance to watch this short film, sincerely it was first for Götz Otto, who is an actor I admire... very talented... But I loved that short film ! The story is very complex, like a David Lynch maze story, with Hitchcock - and most generally Film Noir, 50' Hollywood movies - allusions. The characters are very rich, perfect, Götz Otto's character is very surprising and original, in some ways a ghost who haunt his wife, played by the French Agnes Godey. She is fantastic in her role too, very implicated and emotional. The atmosphere is also incredible, lighting work creates a frightening closed doors, and the soundtrack underlines this fearful aspect... Story's final twists are incredible and make the short film a very strange experience and make it much more darker... Then I understand that the director is very young, 18 when he made the movie, it's awesome!

A throwback to the great thriller
mattbrar13 July 2017
« Vesper » is a kind of experiment which pulls you in and never lets go, not even at the end with unexpected twists. What the director did in 23 minutes is just incredible. There is a huge work to establish a mysterious, strange and an oppressive atmosphere which is actually the key of the movie. Like the characters, we are shut away in a haunted house, from the beginning there's an eerie and we understand characters are hiding secrets from each other.

The storyline is great, the short film has an original concept and Götz Otto's Walter character is incredible! Ambiguous, dreadful, threatening, as devilish as emotional, he's a very complex character, both in the darkness and in the light. Marge is less interesting, but when masks come off, she becomes a very deep character with a lot of psychology… The performances are phenomenal.

Thanks to the evocative cinematography, the mysterious atmosphere, the unsettling score and an excellent direction (camera work, sound…), the building of suspense and mystery is engrossing. During 23 minutes, it's like you're somewhere else… the end is so thrilling...

The movie reminds us Amenabar's « The Others », also some Hitchcock, Lynch, Fincher, De Palma movies… very nostalgic of that time… it's a throwback to the great thriller !

Engrossing, enjoyable short film !

Powerful Experience inside a mind haunted by the past
forbesxavier19 October 2018
What a powerful and brilliant experience that delivers this short. From the very beginning to the very end it's never boring even the pace is rather slow. You definitely want to feel or guess what shatters, haunts these two characters, especially Marge who has shutted herself in a house. And the enigmatic 'sinister' husband, Walter.

The story is quite good you have to watch it at least two times to see all the subtleties. Cinematography and music work fine together. Camera work, editing and sound design are very good. There is a very mysterious atmosphere (insides and at the middle of the film, the beach scene...).

Otto and Godey work very well together.

So hard to write about this sort film as it's strange and definitely go watch this movie to feel what's going on inside this house. You will be haunted by 'the stars' after the credits...
