Clementine (2019)
5/10
Slow paced, well acted, missing something in the final third.
18 April 2024
Clementine is a slow paced film which conveys a very life like tone through a vehicle of subtle shots, the scenery and locations, the very relatable moments. Yet it only appears to work to some degree, as the audience are teased along on a ride to something dramatic or intense that never seems to come or register. The Film is relatable to everyone, however it is most relatable to those who have experienced a recent relationship breakup. Lara Gallagher builds up to something, but in the end I'm not entirely sure of what. The subliminal message is far from obvious, in fact it's more oblivious to me, my guess is it's something along the lines of 'relationships suck'!

Karen (Otmara Marrero) toys with the idea of a relationship with a younger provocative woman as opposed to the previous older partner of the same sex. Fresh off a breakup Karen breaks into her ex's lake house seeking refuge. The acting makes the film bearable in a turn of events that feel somewhat pointless. Lana (Sydney Sweeney) is perceived to be a troubled bored youth with a need for attention. Karen is fascinated by her but not entirely convinced she is trustworthy of always telling the truth. Both characters appear to be victims, possibly the strongest message of the piece is that relationships have no discrimination on sex and both men and women can be equally as difficult when strong feeling are involved. Lana stripped down to the bone in order to pursue her goals as an actress while Karen is left feeling hopeless and lost due to the impact of her relationship with D. (Sonya Walger). Promising signs from an acting point of view.

The score is the most unique or unusual considering the content, it often leads us to believe something horrific or outrageous is only a few feet away that never really comes to light. Far from a horror/thriller at times, just a reflection on reality from calm peaceful silence to on the edge tipping points, the balanced blend between the two is very close to home.

Lara Gallagher has made a worthy attempt of making her audience feel something for her characters, still, the final ingredient to the recipe is missing that spice leaving the end feeling a little flat.

Along came another Exorcism.
16 April 2024
Along came the Devil is closer to a classic 80s or 90s style horror more so than most films in this genre nowadays. Although I'm not entirely sure this is a good thing as it feels slow paced and less effective in today's times. The reason most reviews are negative is because it's too similar to a much bigger film in The Exorcist. The appearance of the film is too light at times for the horror genre and mainly relies on quick jump scares. Once again it is about possession, being possessed by the devil, much like the Exorcist. The audience is introduced to Ashley who has a rather traumatic upbringing as a little girl living with her abusive father alongside her sister contained within the closet. Ashley and her sister are expected to keep out of the way during their father promiscuous activity with a new lady, seemly without a care in the world for his daughters.

Later Ashley (Sydney Sweeney) fully grown into teen years developing through adolescence is sent to live with her estranged Aunt Tanya (Jessica Barth). Both actresses are riveting in performances adding more believability and authenticity to the film. The film has many moments of silence hoping to catch its audience off guard with sudden noise and shocking bursts. I didn't feel much from the score in terms of anxiety or intensity and the story is pretty basic considering it follows a narrative closely resembling The Exorcist. The problem is there has been so many of these type of films which have had more impact whereas this one appears and disappears from the mind rapidly. Forgettable maybe but enjoyable enough for a one time watch mainly because the acting is good. Some scenes just kill time and feel like they have little purpose although teen parties is something we have came to expect from this genre.

The ending felt different and the two supporting Pastor John Douglas (Matt Dallas) and Reverend Michael (Bruce Davison) both played their parts well. The effects were okay although nothing felt overly scary just more sicking to watch.

Euphoria: Pilot (2019)
Season 1, Episode 1
8/10
You will feel mixed emotions with each character!
10 April 2024
The writers of Euphoria have done fantastic job of creating the life of a teenager in high school and the style and acting makes every moment seem so authentic. Sam Levinson appears to have a facet of himself in all the characters he writes one way or another in this show. A classic industry saying is write what you know and in doing so, you will have more empathy invested in your characters.

With that said this first episode introduces all the characters with style and draws the audience into a world most older viewers would know little of. It focuses on a group of kids trying to navigate the world today from their perspective. Social media has brought forward this feeling of a narcissistic pursuit, often indulging in oneself more than required. The world is consistently changing and this early episode shows effectively an anxiety within the young created through drugs, sex and social media. The constant need for attention juxtaposed with feelings of emptiness and never being good enough. The whispering walls of lies and deceit. The first episode is undoubtedly a real eye opener of the hurt and cruelty young people suffer in todays times. The most intriguing part of this is the cinematography alongside the acting, due to the interesting close ups adding to the unnerving atmosphere.

Night Teeth (2021)
6/10
Quirky, Teeth-sinking fun!
7 April 2024
Night Teeth is a different kind of vampire movie that offers shades of originality and had so much potential to be great. The problem is the conclusion as it felt so far-fetched and weak, its utterly ludicrous. Admittedly putting mortal beings such as humans up against the undead did not feel much of a fair fight. Still, the climax felt flat with little wit or emotional impact leaving nothing new.

Far from awful however, as we are tickled with teeth-sinking charisma from lead to lead. The two leading ladies (Debby Ryan) Blaire and (Lucy Fry) Zoe are intriguing with enough mesmerising force to keep the audience entertained and compelled. Alongside them we have (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.) Benny. There chauffeur for the night who is also gripping in his role. At times even though the audiences knows who the vamps are we still seem to be viewing each scenario play out through Bennys perspective. The wonder of what might be going on behind the door is often more tense than the actual outcome. At times i felt myself wondering who to root for, surely the humans is the obvious choice? Still, when i see poor Benny confused and mixed up in it all i mainly need him to survive. His character arc, inevitably appears to find common ground with Blaire whom is batting for the opposition. However once the truce is broken all hell will break loose leaving Benny stuck in the middle.

Style wise and visually this film is stunning as well as the cinematography being crisp. The after effects team have done an magnificent job of bringing it all together. The lightening an mood of the film is spot on with what they are trying to convey. It is by no means a full commitment horror piece, with some great action sequences and location shots to suit it is closer to Blade or Underworld.

Gracing our presence for just enough duration to call it a tease, or a cameo as the industry would say, two of the most beautiful ladies. (Sydney Sweeney) playing Eva and (Megan Fox) as Grace. That gave me enough of a reason to check this film out in the first place and introduce me to new talent.

All in all, not as bad as the score suggests and worthy of a watch.

The Voyeurs (2021)
7/10
Somebody watching you, AGAIN!
2 April 2024
With a fresh spin...

Recently i saw Immaculate which inspired me to go check out Michael Mohans previous work staring Sydney Sweeney. As much as i enjoyed 'Immaculate' and i did. I enjoyed The Voyeurs even more. Maybe it was the Topless sex scene, but I'd like to think it's more than just that. The entire piece intrigued me. Let me explain why.

The Voyeurs reminds me of a John Carpenter movie i watched recently. In genre terms, probably cross between the thriller and drama film types. What begins as harmless interest in the strangers affairs focusing on the opposite apartment window, will soon become an obsession.

The current 'It girl' as Pippa (Sydney Sweeney) is well and truly suited for the part and it is seen within her acting so clearly you already sense what is going to happen after the first half hour. The sudden interest is too strong to ignore, which is a credit to her acting, yet it leaves some predictability. However later there is enough of a twist to outplay the audience with a very satisfactory feeling.

The standout sex scene is probably the best part of the movie and also one of the best sex scenes I have seen in any movie. Its a slow seductively well played out scene with a lot of guilt as well as maximum pleasure. This can only be credit to (Ben Hardy) as Sebastian and (Sydney Sweeney) as Pippa they make it feel so wrong, still somehow we wanna see it. Lately Sweeney is credited more for her out of this world boobs, (i can see why after that scene) than her acting, which is a real shame as this girl can act.

Many are talking about (Justice Smith) as Thomas, admittedly i never noticed an issue with his voice or acting but this is coming from somebody who has not watched him in previous movies.

I love the direction and cinematography it all felt right for this type of film. The binoculars to show how far Pippa's obsession went too far. Did she really want to help the other lady out or was it just her way of sticking her nose in? Was she secretly bored of her man and did she want to experience somebody new the entire time? This film answers a variety of questions we all experience at some point in our life.

Overall there are films similar like "Somebody is watching me" the John Carpenter film or even before then Hitchcock. But this seems fresh as it is more of a modern update on that kind of flick, and again, it offers two twists I didn't see coming!

Immaculate (2024)
7/10
Sydney acts well, but if you can't sleep after this..
31 March 2024
We got nice big pillows too.

Featured everywhere lately on social media Sydney Sweeney takes a leap of faith onto the big screen, playing sister Cecilia, which is quite the reverse from her other big outing in "Anyone but you". Black bear pictures and Sydney's own production company, Fifty-fifty films, Fire away as Sydney releases two big feature movies in close proximity. The opening of the film is fantastic to set the tone instantly as a dark and gloomy horror in a convent. Rapidly on the run we begin with sister Mary sneaking into a superiors bedroom at night to steal a ring of keys which open the gate of the convent. The opening shows desperation leaving an uncomfortable feeling within the presence of the convent.

This is the second feature that director Michael Mohan has paired with actress Sydney Sweeney although his last affair was more psychological thriller than dark horror. Once again in the lead just like their previous collaboration "The Voyeurs" Sydney has a solid on screen portrayal, bizarrely so, as a nun this time, it doesn't seem the most fitting considering the previous representation. Still, Sydney Sweeney is unfazed and right at home determined to prove people she can exude confidence playing any part and perhaps even more so create believability with her onscreen natural talent. The acting is pretty good from all involved however I can imagine there will be some backlash from avid religious followers on the content being shown. Brutal in parts, and quick scare jumps elsewhere Immaculate provides a worthy contender to be consider a reasonably good horror.

The story is the idea of being the chosen one, to the point of one character quoting "I'm won't be surprised if they start calling you Mary", with a touch of jealousy. The film shows religion in its ugliest form with the superiors being mean who are far too deluded in their faith to be saved and far too gone to be rehabilitated. The ending is very intense and probably the highlight of the film. The nun in Sydney can't be contained as there is some mild nudity here and there and why wouldn't there be at the moment she is the'It Girl' in Hollywood and considered to be Immaculate.

Reality (I) (2023)
6/10
When your job becomes persona
29 March 2024
This can only boost the career of Sydney Sweeney in what feels like a showcase of her acting, if ever you need a showreel to propel, this would be it. Far from just another talentless blonde, Sydney really excels in a very natural performance worthy of cementing herself as the future and one to watch.

Based on the true story of Reality Leigh Winner, an NSA contractor who released information proving of Russian interference in the 2016 US Presidential Election. This film might be a slow burner for many and definitely not everyone's cup of tea. It's mainly a low budget dialogue based script using actual FBI interrogation transcript loosely from recordings I'd imagine. The issue is many parts have to be bleeped out due to opening up a much bigger can of worms. Seems somewhat ironic as the released information is what brought us to the dance in the first place. There is a lot of repetition within the script, simple stuff that just fills gaps to extend what could be a short film. Agent Garrick (Josh Hamilton) and Agent Taylor (Marchant Davis) really do appear to be overly inquisitive at times, and asking simple questions multiple times that appear just time fillers. It feels like something that could be performed on stage better than in film mainly due to the fact it isn't overly entertaining to watch. What is intriguing and just enough to keep the audience engaged is the acting of Sydney Sweeney. The film also keep you involved as you want to know where it is all leading. Me not knowing much of the real story was of great benefit here. However if you knew of it you'd probably find it all too tiresome to continue.

The cinematography is basic and the direction isn't overly impressive as the entire piece revolves around acting, which is refreshing as I hear so many saying Sweeney is only famous for two things and they barely feature in this. Tina Satter makes a bold leap with her first film as a director, writer and producer so you can't fault the effort here. Overall it's not bad a one time watch film and definitely a step in the right direction for Sydney Sweeney.

CODA (2021)
8/10
I've looked at love on both sides now!
24 March 2024
I can see why this film won the Oscar for best picture as it has an emotional impact as well as real life scenarios which can be relatable to a wide range of people. CODA, an acronym for children of death adults is a special film. There is an old saying that actions speak louder than words and never is this saying put to the test more than that in CODA.

(Emilia Jones) plays Ruby Rossi and is exceptional considering the lengths this role would've required to produce a good outcome. No doubt learning sign language and acting alongside death actors could only improve her as an actress. Some of cinemas earliest greats were films that had no sound from Charlie Chaplin to Buster Keaton. This however has sound in its repertoire and utilises it well to create a nice balance. Joni Mitchell's song "both sides now" created a memorable moment of biblical proportions. I'd say it has such a nice touch of raw emotional empathy going as far as to say it is the scene of the film. What originally appeared as an easy watch Sunday afternoon tv time film soon becomes a magical moment.

Hello Sydney, what's your favourite scary movie?
23 March 2024
Well, not this of course as it is a romcom, or just romance as the comedy is few and far between. The scary thing is how she might be perceived after this, (hopefully not just a sex object with very little talent) although I can't comment enough on the subject at this present moment in time. The reason for this? I'm yet to experience much of her content, currently Sydney Sweeney seems to be more and more popular with her recent appearances on Saturday night live and promoting of the film 'immaculate'. She is even popular for the supposedly god awful film Mademe Web I have also not viewed. However I'm sure my ignorance will eventually be overloaded with her upcoming offerings or maybe I'll delve into what has been and gone. Alongside Glen Powell you have enough hot chillies to entice both male and female hormonal adolescence. Since saturday night live I've been hearing Sweeney being hailed "hottest woman in the world". Scared yet? I Baywatch babes are already throwing in the towels . I very much doubt the studios are worried as this is a no brainer for making money even if it's an easy watch, less thought provoking kinda flick. Sweeney is embracing her youth bringing home the money and putting it aside for projects in the pipeline, I can assure you of that. Immaculate in appearance, no pun intended and as shallow as this film can be on the exterior, I see something in the interior, Sydney Sweeney can act! She has some rewarding charm within her acting skills and a certain chemistry with Glen Powell, even if at times he appears like he is just reading his lines.

So what is this really about? It's a love hate relationship that is predictable from the get go, far too silly to be taken seriously. The writing is ridiculous and flawed at times meeting each and every low expectation imaginable. Let's face it folks anybody putting this on from a male perspective wanted to see Sydney Sweeney in as little as possible, like I don't know maybe a bikini, and every female vice versa would like to see less on Glen Powell. Which is exactly what they got. I doubt anybody watching this came to see an award winning romcom. Bea and Ben go through the rounds from faking it to making it with scriptwriting from Llana Wolpert and Will Glunk. Will Glunk has directed films of a similar taste such as the likes of 'Friend with Benefits' and 'Easy A' and the film is loosely based on a Shakespeare called 'Much Ado about nothing'. The are many nice moments such as the Titanic imitation on the boat as well as Bea's plan to deceive the newly weds by playing them at their own game and faking her relationship with Ben. There is also many poorly executed moments due to such a week script. Often the supporting characters just feel like they are the to set Bea And Ben on there way, rather than having any development of their own. In fact I'd go as far to say none of the characters have much of a journey or really even learn much. The score is a pretty standard or even below par attempt when all is said and done using the repetition of "feel the rain on your skin" to the point of overkill at the climax. If you like either of the leads you will probably manage the entire duration due to such strong eye-candy. Sweeney is very charismatic although I can't help but feel her talent is somewhat wasted here. Luckily for her most won't care as she has other qualities to keep most fully engaged.

Do you want to know more?
9 March 2024
At face value Starship Troopers the story of somebody, Johnny Rico ( Casper Van Dien) holding on to the love of his life, his girlfriend Carmen Lbanez ( Denise Richards)! He joins up as a mobile infantryman for the wrong reason. The United Citizens Federation is Earths government, founded by veterans years earlier. Citizenship can only be earned by federal service and people live in a fascist society. Once you've earned your place it grants rights to vote and procreation, these rights are revoked from regular everyday people.

Similar to Paul Verhoevens Robocop the audience is provided with television adverts throughout the film which are propaganda often used to manipulate our main protagonists. The idea of only letting the public know what they want them to know or need them to at any given time. It is a parody of so many things within reality all enticing enough to bring elements of control. This movie also resembles the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek yet makes more of a self mockery of the idea. The script is humorous in the way it is self aware of the silliness of its ideas as well as characters created. The exaggeration for comedic effect is much to its merit. There is a lot of coincidence within the script, however we are able to accept this due to the tone Verhoeven created. Dispense of belief is always good if approached with passion and love towards the project, and Verhoeven has buckets of it! It is political satire at its best, yes Johnny Rico goes to war because he wants to remain close to his girlfriend, which at the time seems ridiculous, but when is their a right reason to go to war?

This film came out in 1997 and for the time the visual effects are impressive. The acting is pretty good for the type of film they are trying to produce. I highly recommend people giving this a viewing at some point.

It's all just nothing.
12 February 2024
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have left us with a subliminal message amongst a discombobulated script. Yet the message has less of an impact than the quote halfway through the film as Jobu Tupaki (Stephanie Hsu) somewhat discontent, utters "it all means nothing". This hit me so much in fact, that in the end the entire film feels very similar to the thoughts of their main antagonist. I get where they were going, or at least I think I do, we are all just so small and meaningless in the grand scheme of things. A what does it all mean tale; some might say it's a narcissistic way of thinking. The brain moving at hundred miles per hour trying to decipher anything and Everything, Everywhere All At once. Can't people just be content, do we really need to know the answer to everything. Life is so confusing, okay I get it. Did these guys really just throw some post-it notes up in the air about life in general and why we are here? It feels like it! However, at its core this movie is a lot about nothing, it's a fantasy world of vault jumping or whatever they called it, from universe to another universe disconnecting with the one you are in. Each revealing a different version of oneself of what you could be or are truly capable of. It's slightly depressing in parts as it's the idea of never fully being satisfied! I'm not convinced the screenplay is worthy of an Oscar as I feel this is the type of script that could've been rounded up with infinite possibilities. "Just be kind to people" doesn't seem to get the earth shaking beneath my feet and I think I know why. The main issue is there is way too many distractions to take anything meaningful at the end as face value.

The mother daughter relationship is dysfunctional throughout allowing for Jobu Tupaki to become a fierce adversary. The acting is probably the main strength of the film at times keeping us engaged in what would normally feel like a meaningless borefest lacking substance and carrying little weight. Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu both present strong performances alongside Jamie Lee Curtis who wasn't overly amazing, yet somehow grab herself an Oscar. To me Jamie Lee just feels too much like Jamie Lee again. Ke Huy Quan plays Waymond Wang who is shown as a less significant powerless character who happens to have one scene of kung fu. Over than that he is consistent in reminding Evelyn Wang how she is superior and how he believes only she can stop Jobu Hsu. In other words he is like a lost puppy dog with very little redeeming qualities, praying on the success of his wife. It's like the Matrix, this one empowers this time the female lead to a point of over emphasis, all very similar just nowhere near as interesting as when it comes to the final product. By the end of it we know that a mother could have gone any universe and be any version of herself but would rather be in the one she is currently in with her daughter. Touching stuff, do you detect some sarcasm? So do i! Don't get me wrong it isn't terrible just way below what I usually consider as an academy award winning film. So what was the point in it all? Some sort of emptiness whilst trying to figure out the meaning of life is my guess, you tell me?

Does dog have hands? No, let me explain!
8 February 2024
Landmine Goes Click is a very edgy off the radar story that probably has failed to have the exposure it deserves. Levan Bakhia keeps the location simple relying on good acting and a dialogue driven script. It has interesting characters alongside a basic plot. A sick twisted thriller with a bizarre outcome much like another film I saw called Funny Games. There are no heroes in this film, it's filled with torture, hatred and revenge.

The story revolves around a group of three within a love triangle, one girl and two guys. It's a good suspense film with a little dark humour at times. The film is set in the desolated landscape European Georgia where three American hikers are trekking. Sick games follow when Chris has the misfortune of accidentally stepping on a landmine. The mixed reviews for this film are totally warranted, in the sense you are either going to embrace it as entertaining suspense thriller, or you'll find it a little too much to withstand. Thrillers always reign closer to what could happen than horror films which are more fantasy. What makes this one compelling is the idea that some of this stuff could actually happen if not being a little extreme and exaggerated. The female audience are less likely to enjoy or perceive this film with high regard as it degrades women on and off throughout the film. The women characters are portrayed as inferior and helpless, even going as far as full on humiliating them. Viewed only as a sex object with little redeeming qualities, alongside being shown as unfaithful.

The men on the other hand are viewed as misogynistic with little regard for the opposite sex on a quest for revenge. Vengeance is at the helm and the main theme of the film. As far as acting goes everyone plays their part in a believable way. (Sterling Knight) is particularly inspiring show his acting talent towards the end when he gives off a bewildering look of shock and an expression shame. It's a what have I just done, kinda look. (Spencer Locke) as Alicia is engaging offering a splendid contrast in her role, you can really feel her pain and frustration in some gripping scenes as the story moves forward, part guilt, part anger alongside some fear. (Kote Tolordava) as llya for me is the reason this film is worth watching, he is sadistic and laughable at times. He appears as an innocent delusional bystander who just wants something in return, because to him that is what is fair. Although this act he is putting on is much further from the truth, its mind games as he carries with him an enormous amount of weight plagued in cruelty.

What's great about this film is how (Dean Geyer) Daniel kicks the film off hiking with his girlfriend and best man and then suddenly it turns in a completely different direction. Some audience members might have been more excited if they got to see Daniel get what's coming to him at the end, however I think it worked well the way it was concluded. This film shows how we are all on the border of insanity and how one push to far might be enough to send anybody over the edge.

Just Friends (I) (2005)
6/10
The Friend-zone can be broken, apparently!
5 February 2024
The premise of the story evolves around the idea that you can't make somebody love you no matter how hard you try. The conclusion seems somewhat different and less believable to me. It's highly likely that this feel good romantic comedy will be relatable to some and humorous enough to keep you engaged. It's not gonna get the earth shaking beneath your feet so much, as it is just an easy watch. There is plenty of cartoon like exaggeration for comedic effect, yet it's relatable to so many.

Often the idea of trying too hard can be a repellent, maybe equally as much as not being physically attractive. As well as trying to be somebody you are not. In the end people inevitably try putting on a persona to attract the opposite sex which leads to more issues further down the line, when they find out and not what expected they after all. I believe this movie covers these topics loosely. With elements of the other guy always getting in the way, sticking his nose in, yet too often the other guy is a smoking mirror, as the downfall tends to be the person themself either being to needy or pretending to be someone they are not. They loose site of themselves are therefore unattractive focusing to much on the woman they want. Nobody should have to change to be with somebody and if they can't accept that person or aren't attracted to them the way they are, well, seriously, it's time to move on.

(Ryan Reynolds) Chris Brander wants Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart) yet he is just stuck in the friend-zone and has been for some time. The cast are all suited for the roles they play conveying the characters with an overemphasise on the importance of oneself and the goals they are trying to achieve. My personal favourite in the film has to be the performance of (Anne Faris) Samantha James emulating shades of real life young pop stars who have gone off the rails at times due to the overwhelming stress of fame. The Samantha James character appears eccentric and somewhat Britney Spears-Esk. (Chris Klein) Dusty Dinkleman is the annoyingly good competition for Chris Brander and feels much like an arch nemesis popping up at all the wrong times for Chris Brander.

The direction and writing is standard for this type of genre mainly relying on the actors to bring it to life with their personality and charm. Each actor and actress works in this film and it's difficult to be critical as they are the life of what would otherwise be a basic method of storytelling. If you haven't see this I'd say it's worth at least one viewing, just to make you realise there is more than one person out there for you and you don't just have to devote so much energy into your high school crush. If it's meant to be, it will be so let thing fall into place naturally.

Time to throw in the towel.
1 February 2024
Not too long after Ninja Turtles three there was a live action series called the next generation, yet somewhere down the line the four Ninja mutants lost their appeal. Even adding a fifth female Turtle didn't go down well. Every dog has its day, often wanting or needing a reboot to refresh for the next lot of youths to enjoy. The reboot seemed inevitable after turtles went back to old world Japan. But even the reboot years later in the form of Michael Bay failed to grasp the concept of what was once great.

This film tied in with a video game around the same time called Turtles in time. The game generated a much higher degree of interest in me than the film. It had dinosaurs, i mean how cool is that? What i can appreciate is they tried something different to round off the trilogy. Creating new Villain, Walker (Stuart Wilson) for the Turtles to encounter rather than the same old Shed dude with his foot clan. Taken out of the sewers and streets of New York to olden world Japan. An alternate returning (Elias Koteas) Casey Jones is also within the mix both at home in New York and what appears as a doppelganger. Still, this Casey is way less effective than in the original film. Also returning the much trusted ally April O' Neil (Paige Turco).

The film has elements of emotion and to some extent a story of trying to return home. The Turtles are left no choice to travel back in time to retrieve April. The costumes of the Turtles were a little less polished in comparison to the previous Jim Henson designs. Overall it was a less intriguing film than the previous to and a franchise slowly declining.

RoboCop: Rogue City (2023 Video Game)
8/10
Dead or Alive you're coming with me!
31 January 2024
It's a journey you are obligated to take if you were ever a fan of Robocop and it's a escape into the world of old Detroit once more. It could well be an escape into a newly formed Delta city depending on who you are voting for, however that is just the tip of the iceberg. See the city through the eyes of Robocop and become the main character of the films you loved or grew up watching. Returning to voice one of our favourite protagonists from the eighties, is (Peter Weller) as the part-man, part-machine serving the public trust! "He's a cyborg you idiot", yes a cyborg with a lot of heart and emotional trauma, yet this time you'll be in control of those emotions. You will decide who to empathise with, who you believe to be telling the truth and who should serve time and true justice. This is a homage to the first few films and pays tribute having lots of Easter eggs from both the first and second film.

Developed by Teyon and published by Nacon this first-person shooter is the most intimate experience as Robocop so far. Creating a new original storyline based on the films you must clean up the streets of Detroit and rid the city of crime and corruption. The story continues from where Robocop 2 left off, with trances of nuke still present. The atmospheric level designs are so reminiscent of the films it's incredible the job they produced with unreal engine. The nostalgia that brought so many to the dance in the first place will reign supreme.

Robocop Rogue city introduces a variety of new characters whilst still maintaining familiarity with some of the original ones. Anne Lewis returns of course, alongside a few other favourite such as Sergeant Warren Reed, reporter Casey Wong and OCP's top dog and CEO known as "The Old Man".

So why should you invest some time into this game and what do I love about it? First of all, it captures the essence of what made Robocop such a great film in the first place. The depiction of the run down dystopian like old Detroit juxtaposes with the future of Delta city in the works. Still, Delta never seems to arrive, it's like an illusion, a smoking mirror, a false promise of what could be. Paul Verhoeven's original has been difficult to emulate since, with the sequels never quite living up to what true Robocop fans know as cannon. However, this game closely resembles parts of both the Weller films; it is worthy of being called Robocop 3 more so than, ACTUAL Robocop three. Often as sequels commence they never quite live up to the first, yet now more than ever, i as an avid Robocop fan wanted to relive some of the magic. The 2014 Robocop was a million lightyears away from what I wanted to see, even going as far as to say I'd happily watch Robocop 3 instead. Now though, thanks to the world of game we are now able to relive Robocop in a fresh way like never before.

The story of this game will evolve depending on your decision and the choices you make throughout the game. In this depiction it isn't guaranteed that you'll have the same ending as me but it is likely you'll have a hell of a ride.

I remember watching this movie in the cinema when it was first released. I think this was my first Ninja Turtle movie experience. Now watching it more recently as an adult the feeling is still fairly good, however the sequel fails to live up to the standard set on the first outing. With a much lighter tone and more goofy silly humour. Where it really falls short is the variety between humour and emotion. The first film apparently received complaints from parents saying it was too dark and violent which in turn probably convinced the studio to go more safe with this one.

Where were Bebop and Rocksteady i vaguely remember myself thinking when watching this film and who is Rahzar and Tokka? I was not a fan of the changes made as i just felt cheated and they were unnecessary. The changes made were so minor but to a kid my age at the time it just felt wrong. Rahzar and Tokka were well and truly evident replacements and equally as stupid. The studio wanted to bring in Bebop and Rock Steady from the cartoon, but those characters didn't originate in the comics, and the legal clearances to use them would've been more complicated, so they simply created Rahzar and Tokka as Shredder's monsters.

(Paige Turco) takes over as April O' Neil and is equally as playful as the Turtles in the early scenes. Her presence, alongside her strength of character, is evident here. She feels very real and interacts with the turtles in a believable way in comparison to some more recent Turtles movies. Keno (Ernie Reyes Jr.) Begins as a pizza delivery guy yet delivers a lot more than meets the eye. Some might make a juxtaposition with Keno and Danny in the original played by (Michael Turney). Both characters appear lost souls who happen to cross paths with the turtles in a run down broken society.

Overall the sequel is a worthy accept and enjoyable yet it brings no real surprises and is far less complex in story and tone.

I remember as a young boy having almost the entire collection of turtles action figures, as well as having the sewer their lair. I also remember waking up early every morning early to catch each episode of the cartoon and I must say this interpretation is the closest they have come to replicating the morning cartoon show from 1987. Whether that is the true cannon of teenage mutant ninja turtles is well and truly open for debate. It was originally created in 1983 as a comic book by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and much of the violence would've been toned down in the cartoon show for kids. The turtles were the postmodern heroes of the late eighties and early nineties taking on aspects of daredevil and Xmen as influences. Disappointingly the turtles seemed way less relevant around the dawn of millennium, although there had been a few failed attempts to bring them back and gain more exposure of what once was. Fast forward and delve further into the 2000s and Michael Bay was willing to give them another shot producing the first live action attempt since they went back in time. The forth turtles film well and truly buried due to terrible reviews to the 1993 Ninja Turtles three movie, it would need a refreshers course to investigate anything worthy of a watch.

Now that the trilogy is a distant memory, we had a reboot that pretty much brought nothing new to the table, even the story felt no different from 1990. In comparison it's sequel Out of The Shadows is a breath of fresh air. Finally we get to see some of the characters I remembered in the cartoon I once watched as a boy. Admittedly this is a more lighthearted version than the original 1990 version Jim Hensons costumes instilled. The humour is evident early on and it leave very little room for the serious viewer. (Megan Fox) feels more at home the second time round playing April O'Neil and is joined once again by (Will Arnett) as Vernon Fenwick. The effects of this movie are sensational and the characters are far more interesting than the first one. From the first time we get introduced to Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly) who many will recognise from the WWE. Accompanied by the main antagonist from another dimension Krang (Brad Garrett).

The story has some nice integrated details between the brothers, the Turtles which felt missing in Jonathan Liebesman's first attempt. Also visually Dave Green sequel is stunning stepping it up a notch or two. The relationship between Leonard and Raph is more sophisticated as they go on different courses but figure out a way to work as a team. What this movies emphasises is how the Turtle are all so unique in they own way with their own skills and personalities. The differentiation adds layers to the movie and although a little corny towards the end still manages to say more than the first outing. The anticipation of finally seeing characters like Rocksteady, Bebop and Krang on the big screen is revitalising. Also I'd managed to get used to the score more carried over from the first movie and the theme feels more catchy now, although it is difficult to beat the score and soundtrack from the 1990s version. I also noticed when Casey Jones smashes up the dukebox in the bar it's actually playing Vanilla Ice who appears in the secrets of the ooze sequel, I'd say that's a little Easter egg there or homage. On the subject of Casey Jones, is wasn't so into the idea of him being a police officer and (Stephen Amell) didn't have the same effect on me as (Elias Koteas) portrayal. I felt like they sold this Casey way short considering what an interesting character he can be around the turtles and often a love interest of April O' Neil.

As a film this is on par with the 1990s versions is my opinion but for completely different reasons, it's much lighter in tone and far more comedic. The character are ridiculously stupid and how they come about however this feels most like the Turtles I grew up watching every morning before school. It's never gonna win big awards, still that clearly isn't the intentions. This is a feel good, chill out and relax dude don't have to think too much kind of film and that's all it needs to be.

Bodacious attempt, but can't emulate the magic of the 90s.
14 January 2024
Storywise TMNT has similarities to the original nineteen nineties version, nevertheless there are clearly parts in this modern interpretation which credit the Turtles in comparison to the first adaption. One obvious evident improve is the fighting style and action scenes, unfortunately in the nineties it was literally impossible to perfect the moment with Jim Hensons Turtle suits as can be performed with Computer generated images. Now, with motion-capture the way forward the progress in action sequences has been phenomenal. That being said progress in some key areas has had a knock on effect in other artist movements.

A huge factor for me as a viewer is the writing. Does this film offer anything new? Is it any better than the nineties movie? My answer to this is simple, no. The key reasons the latest incarnation of the turtles is in fact weaker is because of it lacking basic empathy or emotions. The human side of the story is lost. Casey Jones is vacant, not to be seen! April O' Neil has a less intimate relationship with the Turtles being given lots of screentime without real weight or value. Yes she helped the Turtles escape the laboratory as a kid yet she still feels distant in my opinion. It becomes more her story than their in that moment. The discovery of the Turtles feels like it had less meaning than previously shown in the nineties version. Megan Fox shows a lack of a bond with them then the actress who played her in the original.

The designs of turtles in this movie takes so getting used to. A previous review mentions them saying they feel off putting or maybe too realistic to watch. I found the images over time to be fine except I would say its hard to follow up on the incredible costumes of Jim Henson. Another element that makes the earliest version better for me is how each Turtle has his own unique individual persona, this feels less authentic in the latest installment. Yes we still have the basic differences. Raph, the Muscle, Leo the leader, Don the intellect and Mike the, well his just plan old wise-cracking pizza eating michelangelo. It just they were way more rounded and fully developed polished up characters back then. When Raph gets injured in the original you really felt the connection between the brothers, the brotherhood to stand up for each other and look out for one another. Leo sits on a chair a barely leave Raphaels side.

In the new film its kinda the reverse the other turtles are captured and Raph has to come to their rescue. Splinter is a character that massively under performances in the new adaption. The limitations, in the voice acting I rarely felt worried for him or like he was in danger. The emotional empathy just seems lost.

Sachs, one of the antagonists in this movie was a favourite of mine. Often if you have a good villain you are halfway there to creating a good comic book film. William Fichtners role was definitely one of the positives for me.

Overall the narrative is much the same as the first except it isn't told in an overly compellingly good way. It has less weight and value because it focuses on special effects with over shadow the where the real heart of what made Turtles so great in the first place. Four teenage brothers who didn't always see eye to eye but manage to put their differences aside when it really matters.

Ultimately it is a repeat of a battle on a building with the Shredder and his foot clan. In the words of Red Hot Chilli Peppers "its a repeat of a story told". If you're have to tell something again at least put a new spin on it. Also I will argue with anybody that practical effects will always outweigh computer generated effects because I have less belief in what I'm seeing. Even if its four green Turtles.

Role Play (2024)
6/10
Damn, I thought I'd see her in that nurse outfit!
12 January 2024
Why is Role Play getting some backlash? Pretty sure it's because of the genre the audience is expecting before even hitting the play button. If viewing the film from a different perspective then there are plenty of merits on display here.

One being the performances and the chemistry between the actors/actresses. Kaley Cuoco has it in abundance, I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's there I can feel it. Maybe it adaptability, sophistication or sassy sexiness emulating from one scene to another, still clearly she has it here. I'm going in pretty blind as I haven't seen much of her previous work, no Big Bang or Flight Attendant! Secondly David Oyelowo matches her well and their on screen chemistry appears second nature to me. I think one review mentioned they seem cute together, I don't know about that however I do know they seem believable. I didn't doubt their onscreen relationship for one minute which is exactly what you want to get engrossed into a film.

Now going back to adaptability, Kaley Cuoco embraces the role managing to create a balance between cute cuddly lovable wife and mum to deadly badass assassin. When she get down to business she is strong assertive and bold juxtaposed with being playful and cute at home. David Oyelowo manages to bring emotional empathy within the script through his acting once finding out about the truth. What was once his normal family life has a huge flip side that we can see in his expressions is troublesome to say the least.

So who steals the film with the standout scene, it's obviously none other than Bill Nighy. The man in the middle of this triangle has the standout scene of the film in the bar. A slow burner or so in the first twenty minutes soon well and truly warms up with a little Role Play, no pun intended. Soon as the get to the title it gets rather interesting.

Script is where this one struggles for me, I'd say our cast made their own character development and produced mountains out of molehills. It's not until the later that you realise if not for the charisma and humour this could've been way more bland than a two steak, and that isn't me being tough. Seth W. Owen needed a better character development arc to suggest why Emma Brackett (Kaley Cuoco) was unable to leave sooner from being an assassin, yes it does explain, yet it all very loose lacking depth or much interest. Dave Brackett (David Oyelowo) really seems weak running all the way to Berlin for an explanation after all he has heard and been through. Yes I understand it's his wife, it just seemed rather forced.

Thomas Vincent has given us something intriguing for the most part similar to films like Mr and Mrs Smith and True Lies however this one really does fall short towards the climax and is saved by the talented cast of characters they created.

Nostalgia at its highest level, Jim Henson brought life the four mean green fighting machine, the Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles. The rest is history folks, so now as I look back at the original film it is crystal clear to me that this is the most legit and authentic interpretation to date. Each of the four named after famous renaissance painters, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael have their own individuality. This first outing was dark, gritty and in the words of Tina Turner simply the best dude!

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird intended their mutant hero's to be a parody of some of their favourite comics, a huge influence was the ones mapped out by Frank Miller such as The Dark Knight returns and Sin City. This being the case leaves me feeling that this movie is the closest to how they imagined Ninja Turtles, as it is certainly the darkest portrayal to date. The sequel acknowledges Jim Henson in memory of, and the incredible job he did, this is even more significant considering nowadays often the cgi doesn't measure up to the realism of the physical form. Most famous for working on the puppets of the muppets, Henson was something of a pioneer amongst his peers/colleagues, today these movies have still manage to hold up and stand the test of time. Much like Stan Winston made his mark on films like Terminator, Alien and Jurassic park Jim Henson certainly put his stamp on the family genre.

As much as Henson was at the heart of the overall look of the characters, the costume designs etc, Bobby Herbeck and Todd W Langen brought emotional depth and humour combined. Putting their heads together they chiseled more three dimensional relatable characters from comic to screen. Raphael, with a hot-headed ready for action take no nonsense attitude, Leonardo the fearless leader with more constructive approach, Donatello the articulate problem solver and Michelangelo, the pizza eating wise-cracking party animal.

Trust me if you are going to give four talking Turtles a go this is the one to watch, with believable performances in a fantasy comic world from supporting characters such as Casey Jones and April O' Neil. Steve Barron manages to bring Kevin Eastman and Peter Lairds vision to life, with his approach this even the older audiences might find some redeeming quality's within this world.

Home Alone (1990)
10/10
Kevin!! And that's the one Marv!
20 December 2023
We are still here in 2023 alongside the amass of Home Alone avid fans that refuse to go anywhere. Yes Home Alone is, and will forevermore engrave its name into the history of great films to be shown or viewed around the festival season. Much like Mariah Carey's 'All i want for Christmas' there is another MC that manages to pull on our emotional strings without fail, every single year... That MC is Macaulay Culkin! With a "keep the change you filthy Animal" or "Do you guys give up, or you thirsty for more?" Somehow the audience is compelled to still want more.

This year was more nostalgia than ever before for me because this year i experienced it for my first time on the big screen. I could probably have lip synced the majority of the script, yet somehow it just seemed extra special on the big screen. From the classic John Williams score, to the incredible pacing/direction of Christopher Columbus and not to forget the influence of John Hughes as producer. The title sequence always gets me, as it was so simplistic as well as being so memorable. When watching Home Alone it feels like time stood still, to allow for a tenacious timeless classic.

As a boy i found the character of kevin mccallister very relatable, now as an adult i am still able to relate with Kevin but even more so now i relate to the characters that surround him.

One of my favourites is Gus Polinski the polka king of the midwest! (John Candy) was a massive part of my childhood. What is interesting is how little screen time he has but at the same time what a big impact he has. Gus is the pinnacle of what people should be, somebody who is willing to help others in a time of need. John Candy is the perfect example of making an impact during minimal screentime. The Blues Brothers was another great example of this.

Macaulay Culkin as Kevin Mccallister is in my opinion the very best portrayal by a child actor of any film or genre, certainly of any i have come across in memory. The charisma of Culkin at such a young age was astonishing as well as being able to recognise and differentiate emotions displayed for various scene was incredible.

The wet bandits, what can i say? (Joe Pesci) and (Daniel Stern) owned it as Marv and Harry. There has been attempts since that haven't made a mark on these guys. 'Babies Day Out' and 'Home Alone' 3 please, never is the term often imitated never duplicate more true here. I wonder if they ever could have imagined the impact this film would have on people so much further down the line. Now, T-shirts of the wet bandits or even Gus are more prominent than ever. From headknockers to video games, yes, Home Alone is still being marketed.

As i sit here Culkin's face printed on my shirt saying "keep the change you filthy animal!" I await my all time favourite scene yet. As much humour and warmth as this film projects; the scene that really hits me is when Kevin has a heart to heart with old man Marley! A little corny, Marley is seen reunited with his son and it's the line "you can be to old for a lot of things, your never to old to be afraid!" Well, on that note i will leave you with "you can be a little too old for lot things, yet... You are never going to be to old to watch" Home Alone.

The lasso compels you to tell the truth!
22 November 2023
From deflecting bracelets to the lasso of truth Wonder Woman propels onto the tv screen. This pilot brings the first successful live action interpretation of arguably the most popular female protagonist to be adapted from comic to screen. Although it appears dated in comparison to nowadays this series still manages to bring a lovable warm charm and as Diana Prince (Lynda Carter) presses all the right buttons. There is a subtle difference in the way she transforms from a cute everyday woman to a sassy empowering goddess.

The memorable scene with Ashley Normans (Red Button) as a double crossing showman to a devious Nazi informant is quite intriguing to say the least. The idea that if a meta-human was to live in our world would they instantly be exploited to make money? It seems feasible to me.

(Lyle Waggoner) is Steve Trevor and anybody who knows anything of Wonder Woman would know he is the first man Diana experiences as they cross paths on the shores of paradise Island or more recently know as Themyscira. The Island full of beautiful women highly trained and skilled in combat seeking peace away from the world of man. Lyle Waggoner plays as good part and has good chemistry with Lynda Carter. There is a cuteness to Diana outside her alter ego as Wonder Woman. It's difficult to fault any acting in this early pilot although it does seem to take itself slight more serious than say Adam's Wests Batman. (Henry Gibson) is great as the babbling baddie Nikolas as well as being accompanied by Marcia (Stella Stevens) and Captain Drangel (Eric Braeden).

The direction is nothing too fancy but doesn't really need to be, although the stunts are very dated and show nothing more than Wonder Woman shoving and pushing her foes to the ground with force and strength. The physical presence of Lynda Carter is impressive she certain looks the part and is sexy doing it. You can tell they are working to a budget with some of the action sequences and keeping it more basic with what's possible for the time.

Story wise it's pretty much the opener, the narrative of Diana's journey venturing out to discover the world of man for the first time. All in all its the one I am most familiar with, this isn't a bad thing it's just I'm looking forward to discovering new stories as I haven't read many of the comics.

The title sequence is cheesy yet catchy, allowing the audience to not over analyse and hopefully escape reality as well as enjoying the ride.

Mr J would be very angry!
19 October 2023
For the love of Harley, this epilogue feels like a little valentines add on after the already cold winter experienced in the main narrative. It snows a lot in arkham to say the least, not quite up there with Arkham Origins but you get the point.

So Harley Quinzel has batman hence Harley's revenge, leaving us the gamer to view gotham through the eyes of his trusted sidekick Robin. Balloon popping along the way just for the hell of it, cause why not?

We also get some more batman in a flashback two hours or so earlier. It feels just like a filler with not much purpose, it's technically a Harley Quinn appreciation add on mourning over her loss of the Joker.

Batman: Arkham City - Catwoman (2011 Video Game)
10/10
I'm not sure I feel comfortable surrounded by
19 October 2023
So much ugly...

The slick sexy seductive feline is ready to play here in Arkham City, where Catwoman has her own agenda to accompany what is already the best batman game. With an array of her own Arsenal from bolas, a whip and Caltrops. Catwoman confronts poison Ivy to help her so she can break into Hugo Strange's vault and get the hell out of Arkham City.

Using stealth to your advantage you must guide Catwoman through the facility full of tiger guard often not even needing to take them out. Ultimately though it'll be your choice on how to play the game and whether or not Arkham City is worth saving!

This is one of my favourite interpretations of Catwoman to date. I love the design of the catsuit in this game as well and the cat eye goggles that flip up and down to enhance her vision during combat or stealth mode.

Batman: Arkham City (2011 Video Game)
10/10
It's just little old me!
19 October 2023
Arkham City gave us the best interactive experience as the dark knight to date. Rocksteady brought to life what it felts like go be the batman in its original game Arkham Asylum. Using an artistic colour palette the game was visually stunning on levels never seen in the comic/video game cross-over.

So what followed was Arkham City which took gaming to places this generation had never experienced before, well, certainly not in a Batman game anyway. The catalogue of villains from the rogue gallery, the array of characters all in one place had never been put into one story and never been quite this satisfying. From The Riddlers problem solving riddles, to Victor Zsasz beat the clock phone calls, Deadshot taking innocence out with a sniper and of course the identity theft to name a few; batman really does have his work cut out!

Then main story consists of Hugo Strange controlling the segregated City of Arkham containing all the criminal element in a section of gotham. Uncovering what is really gone on here is all part of the fun, alongside the chaos caused by a dying, yes, dying Joker! Add a cold winter into the mix which can only mean a freeze is coming!! In the name of Victor Fries who might have the cure to the titan fomula carried over from the previous game. Then you have Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin up to his usual, building his emperor in the museum collecting various items of what he considers value. From Ras Al Ghul to Batman's most trusted sidekick this game really has it all.

Further down the line if you are able to purchase the DLC you also get a story as the playable character catwoman coinciding with her own story that will inevitably link up with batman toward the conclusion. I strongly recommend this as it gives the game more layers and is a neat little added bonus.

All in all this is the best batman game of all time and not to be ignored if you are an avid batman fan.
