Party Camp (1987)
6/10
Sure
3 February 2024
Yeah. This is more of a flashback-sentimental review.

I loved these kind of movies when I was younger and Party Camp was more or less the template of said movies.

A bit of boobs, underdogs, and yet... intelligence. Sort of...

Either way, it's a movie I loved back in the 80s (or maybe early 90s). A teenager with too much hormones to cope with. Haha!

Anyway, I watch this movie again, and it's still a fun "party camp" movie. Like the horror movies where someone ends up in a cabin with something nasty going on. This is more of a movie with all the nasty filth going on. The comedy version of a horror movie I guess.

Unexpectedly boring
17 January 2024
Note: This review is based on the first 8 episodes.

If you're into dramas, then this is the show for you.

There's nothing you haven't seen before, the characters are based on the same old templates that Hollywood has used for ages. Same goes for the story and plots - it's just a re-package with a different concept.

Sure, there are some monsters - but I really don't get much of a Godzilla-feeling while watching this.

I can't even remember if I've seen a hint of blood during these first 8 episodes. Even the language is cleaned up, making it even more of a tv-show for kids.

Christopher Heyerdahl is always a treat to watch, but unfortunately we don't see enough of him.

Bloody Hell (2020)

Gory, witty, and bloody hell
22 September 2023
What a great surprise of a great movie. Sure, you should be a fan of horror, but not necessarily. Bloody Hell is mostly action, but with a lot of monologue and dialogue.

The actors are so fitting for their roles, and I liked everyone. Whoever cast these guys, did a crazy good job. The music/sound is perfect too.

The director is the reason I watched this flick. He directed Sanctum (2011) as well, which is totally different and certainly isn't a favorite of mine.

Bloody Hell is one of those movies you'd want a sequel, and you know it would be great. Especially with the subtle ending.

Suggested title for #2: Bloody Hell (with double L's as roman numerals) :D.

House of Cards (2013–2018)

Extremely high quality thriller until season 6
19 September 2023
It was ruined by a lot because of the last season though. With Kevin Spacey gone I really don't get why they even bothered to continue.

Alright, he isn't the only good actor in House of Cards, but he really held everything together. I wouldn't have been too surprised, if the show would still be on today (2023) - if Kevin Spacey was still in it.

When House of Cards first came out it was a refreshing and original show compared to all the formulaic TV shows that there're still too many of. I loved House of Cards from minute one, and the first 4 seasons are a solid 9/10.

For the last season alone, I knocked off a couple of stars on my rating.

Dark Crimes (2016)

Dark and slow moving
21 July 2023
Surely a great movie, and it has Jim Carrey in a role I never would've expected to see him in. I'm impressed!

European movies often has a tendency to feel more real in my opinion. They're often, but of course not always, darker, makes you think, and has a different feel than most of the template based movies coming out of Hollywood.

This is a slow moving film though. It's constantly dark and bleak, and frankly, they over-do that sometimes.

Scene cuts are scarce, there are breathers, and this is something I think is lacking in most movies today.

There's barely any music, and it works. The use of camera is pretty cool, especially when the characters talk into the camera.

The Reckoning (2020)
3/10
The Wreckoning
12 June 2023
I had high hopes, but they were shattered within just a few minutes.

Everything is so fake, despite trying with costumes and settings. Just take a look at the makeup and hair - it's a modern take on everything and it's overdone to bits. It's also a lot of re-hash from movies we've seen before.

Sure, it's just a movie, but movies are an art-form and should be given the tlc that they should have regardless of small or big budgets. In The Reckoning I have a feeling they used most of their budget on makeup and hair, and cgi.

Grit is cool, and grit makes everything feel more real. This one is way too polished.

It's a shame since the background for making a movie like this is amazing. A crazy religion & power mad people, and of course the era of witch burnings and the plague. It had all the potential of being a 7 or 8 out of 10, but it's very far from it.

After.Life (2009)

Wow!
12 May 2023
Sometimes I would like to be able to just add a few words in my reviews, and for this it would be "Wow!"

After. Life is actually an original idea, as far as I know. Great cast and acting, and the plot is crazy AND crazy good.

It may be a bit of a slow-burner, and is more of a drama than anything else. It deals with life and death and gives you something to think about when it comes to those subjects.

I'm paraphrasing here, but the "Why do we die" and "To make life matter" is a brilliant QA.

It's really good though, and it kept me glued to the screen the entire time.

Even when "roll credits" started, and THAT song started, I kept going. What a fitting end to a great movie!

Revenge movies are pure entertainment
20 April 2023
In this case, however, it's really on point I'd say. I love these type of movies, but nothing beats this one. It has originality, considering it's from 1974, and the constructive women towards what should never be.

In some ways these type of movies, although putting the seriousness on the edge, are truly CONSTRUCTVE towards "the case".

Gen Zs have to look at the message and not the violence or whatever. History is the key to understand why we think the way we do today.

This movie has SO many messages that everyone should make a note of today. Some are still very relevant today.

Today though, it really goes both ways. The anti-man is overrated in many ways. It REALLY goes both ways.

Great documentary
17 April 2023
I don't remember that much of this incident. I was 17 at the time, and I remember the fires shown on TV.

It was totally crazy to watch it, but I never knew much other than it was one crazy man's doing.

I decided to watch this documentary to get some backstory, to fill in some big gaps if you will. The little I knew, and what I was thinking about what had happened spot on. It's not like these things haven't happened before.

It's totally nuts how brainwashed, crazy and deluded some of these people still are.

Everybody lost in this pointless tragedy, but I honestly have huge problem feeling sorry for the cult members. The children didn't understand anything, and Koresh was using women and children as shields all the way. A coward, ruthless, and a con man. The world is a much better place without him.

Religion IS sheer stupidity. It has always been about power and money; telling people what to do and to cash in. It was like that a thousand years ago, and it is today.

What is extra scary with these cults is how much they believe in a god that doesn't exist, and how one power mad man (there's always one man) is the one telling them that it exists.

That being said, religion in general is always that same thing. There will never be produced any proof of the ~3000 gods that has been in history over the millenniums of human kind, because something that doesn't exist cannot be proven to exist.

Lucy (I) (2014)

Incredible
3 April 2023
Luc Besson and Scarlett Johansson; what a match. I've been a fan of Besson for ages, and I find his movies to be different and intense at times.

Leon the Profession was the start of being a massive fan of Luc Besson, and overall he is my definitive favorite director. Taxi and The Fifth Element just added to my fandom. His movies are so different, well-made, and always a highlight.

Lucy is no exception, and if you're a sci-fi buff this certainly is sublime. It starts off like many Hollywood movies, but it just goes wild, forwards, and upwards from there.

Besson often bring France into his movies, and it's nice to get a change of scenery compared to, more or less, everything Hollywood spits out.

I really hope there'll be a follow-up to Lucy, but I'm afraid of how it would be. Maybe this one is more than enough?

Terrible
10 March 2023
That kid is the main character in this movie, it's SO bad. He's annoying and derails the entire movie with his antics.

It's so sad, because with this cast (minus the kid) it should've been a blockbuster über alles. It's certainly is not!

The characters are typical template Hollywood characters, and with that there are no secrets as to how the movie is. You figure out everything ten minutes before they happen throughout the whole thing.

I remember watching this around the time it came out, and I had the same impression back then. I haven't seen the original though, but I will for comparison.

Highlight
8 March 2023
M. Night Shyamalan's movies are often lackluster. They build up and then it's like the air goes out of the story.

Like, the special effects, and the disasters (or whatever) in his movies are always at a minimum. That's not always a bad thing, but I always wish there'd be more.

He's got a good "film head" on him though, and his ideas and filming tend to be original and well done. If only the setting was in a city or something.

I haven't read the book this is based on, and that's usually a good thing, since movies tend to be not as good as the books.

One of the guys in the cabin is maybe over-acting a bit, but overall I think the actors did a good job. Dave Bautista, on the other hand, was awesome in this movie. I've kind of always been a fan of him, but in this role he's really showing what he's capable of.

The soundtrack is short, but very good, and I like that the movie isn't constantly littered with sounds and music.

This is more of an intense drama, than anything else.

At this point, this is my favorite movie of 2023.

Das Boot (1981)
10/10
WAR
4 March 2023
World War II (WW2) was terrible, like all wars has been and still are. WW2 took everything much further than before; the holocaust, terror bombing, reprisals, the millions of wounded and, and of course the casualties.

If you watch post-era WW2 films, there are a lot of celebration of allied missions and victories. In latter decades there are more focus on the nastier sides of war. Yet, in my opinion, there are still a big focus on allied versions of WW2.

Das Boot was a game changer in that view. It shows the view of a regular German U-Boat crew , and how they, most likely, experienced the war while on their u-boat. Day to day life, the waiting, food, sea, and terror of many kinds.

Das Boot is slow-paced, and there aren't really any side-stories at all. The entire focus is on the "tiny" u-boat. The script, director, the diverse and awesome actors, all deliver at top-level.

This movie is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've seen it countless times. I re-visit it every now and then, and it has actually been some time since I saw it last. I just finished the really long version, and the approximately 3,5 hours goes by way too fast.

In war, nobody wins!

Crazy stuff
22 February 2023
Whenever I see (any) Skarsgård or Mia Goth are in a movie, it's an instant watch.

As much as Skarsgård does his thing here with conviction, Mia Goth is more than amazing.

The movie itself gives you time to breathe between all things happening. It's not the stressful, 5 cuts a second, movies that Hollywood is behind.

You get time to think, and think of what just happened in the last scene. These are the type of movies I usually like the most, and this one is not an exception.

The whole thing is a wild ride, despite what I just wrote, and the craziness is seeping through everywhere. Goth is definitely the master of crazy.

I want to give this movie a higher rating, but it's one of those that you need to watch more than once to really grasp how good it is. I will let it brew for some time before I re-watch it, which I will.

Weak
22 February 2023
After re-watching the first movie, I decided to give this one a shot too. The first one was pretty damn cool, even the re-watch was for the win. I rated it 7/10.

RIPD2 is fairly new though, and I hadn't seen it until now.

I really struggled with paying attention to, and finishing, the movie.

The two main actors are okay, but they couldn't save this one either way. No chance!

There aren't a lot of special effects over all, but they are really good.

The first movie was a failure supposedly, but I didn't think so. Why they made this is beyond any reason.

Woke, comes to mind too. It's so gen z it's painful. When certain things are screwing with art and culture, it gets messed up... and not in a good way. Hehe!

More of these movies
22 February 2023
I liked this one. It's different in many ways. A cool story, cool actors, and a story that actually works pretty good. The FX are quite nice, the movie is 10 years old after all.

It has been long since I watched this, but with a memory of it being pretty good, I decided to finally re-watch it. It still lives up to the memories of it.

I often do other things when I watch movies and such, but I couldn't stop watching this one. I got myself some snacks, and watched the whole thing in one sitting.

If you like comedy sci-fi type movies like f. Ex. Men In Black, this is the movie for you. The RIPD comics are awesome, so that's an added bonus if you're into the movie.

All of Us Are Dead (2022– )

Duh! This is a High School movie for sure
14 February 2023
I just finished this show, and it certainly was entertaining.

However, it's (very) flawed. Also, I think the target audience is way younger than me.

It definitely has some highlights though, and is a well-made series. The FX are pretty neat, and some fight scenes are badass. I really like the "no mercy at all" attitude of the whole thing too.

I don't watch many movies/shows from Korea, and what I was thinking about this one in particular is why the actors don't have any "feelings". They all seem very cold and (almost) never smiles or anything. Even when they cry they look the same as when they don't. Is this a Korean thing - or just a thing in this show?

Manhunt (II) (2017–2020)

An okay mini-series
26 January 2023
Sure, the story can't be told over several seasons I guess. It would become boring and tiresome.

A huge issue I have with so-called "true story" series and movies, is that most of it is make believe. This is the fact when it comes to documentaries as well.

This series is no exception - the effects they use for drama are massive and see through. They're actually a bit pompous and annoying at times.

One thing that stands out with this series is the extreme timeline, or lack there of. They go back and forth constantly in the first episodes, and it drove me nuts while I watched it.

What I got out of this is the profiling bit. It's cool to see how important profiling can be, and how it can be a way to get a grip of who is the criminal.

Good actors doesn't hurt, and in this series they rock!

For the two latter things, I'm not butchering the rating, but rather give it a cool 6/10.

The Hallow (2015)

Trying to make it real
27 November 2022
Despite the baby being a bit of an annoyance throughout the movie, it's not a bad one.

This is mainly a horror movie, by far, but it has a cool twist to it.

There aren't many actors in The Hallow, but I think they ones in it are pretty good and makes the movie what it is - which is a pretty good one. The actors makes the story of the movie more believable even.

The story is very different, the visual effects are nice, and said actors are good too.

I always comment that non-Hollywood are non-Hollywood. This is one of those, and as always it's refreshing to have some original characters in a setting that isn't a standard.

Let Me In (I) (2010)

Original
6 November 2022
This is an American version of a Swedish (original) version, so calling this one original is maybe a stretch.

I haven't seen the Swedish version, but I will, and I have a feeling I will rate it either the same or +1. I understand Swedish really well, so that'll add to it I guess.

Let Me In is really good though, and there are several things done right. The build-ups of suspense, when relevant, is extremely well done.

The noir minimalism is another point. It's dark, bizarre, brutal, and all in the setting of children's view on what the movie is about. There are few characters also, and yet, there are so many personalities covered.

The actors are performing believable, and you get an impression that they are regular kids in many ways. It's not the excessive personalities and traits in which there is too much of in movies from US/Canada.

Warning: Spoilers
Think... something like this happened, and who know, maybe it still does here and there.

I hope, though, that this is a thing of the past. It's naive, but I hope the human race learns from (or at least) some of its mistakes.

This is a really scary movie. It certainly is a drama at its core, but it's mainly a horror movie. Not the ones you think of when you read "horror", this is more of the realistic ones unfortunately.

Evil, and I mean BAD here, humans will never disappear, but the hope is that we can make them disappear as much as possible. I don't say that the solution in this movie is THE solution, but I fully support it.

I'm not giving this a 10, but I think I should've. Great actors, good story, scary story. Also, the hope for the human race to not be such assholes.

Oh wait! A 10 it is!

Bad Candy (2020)
5/10
I liked it
30 October 2022
Some movies makes you think "well, that's '90 minutes' I'll never get back". Bad Candy is not that kind of movie I dare say.

Think of the original Creepshow movies from the 80s, Bad Candy is an anthology movie like those.

Sure, it's a low-budget indie movie, but that can also have it's charm. It certainly is one of those movies made in the involved people's spare time, or it feels like it at least. That also has it's charm... kind of.

They went all-in with 80s-like non-CGI effects, and that's something I tend to like in these CGI times. The makeup is really overdone on some characters. Most characters are stiff, and they should've read the scripts to make the dialogues more snappy and realistic.

It's pretty cool that Corey Taylor (of the band Slipknot) is a part of this movie. I think maybe he's the best actor too. Hehe!

The last in the trilogy
22 October 2022
Glass is the last of a trilogy by M. Night Shyamalan. I had seen Unbreakable before, but not Split or Glass.

Despite they are their own stories, there certainly is a connection between the three. Before watching Glass you should therefore watch Unbreakable and Split first.

Glass puts everything together, and it has the M. Night Shyamalan trademarks. The cinematography, the incredible use of sounds in every way and the really great actors.

The ending(s) in Glass is sublime. As a whole, this trilogy gives us so much greatness in the form of acting and ideas.

PS: The M. Night Shyamalan cameo in Glass explained my little sidenote of his cameo in my review of Unbreakable.

What an idea for a movie
21 October 2022
M. Night Shyamalan does it again. An idea that works really well on film. Sometimes he don't get it just right, but most of the time he do.

Unbreakable is one of those movies that are really well-made, both the idea and execution. The actors are all-time favorites of mine, and I like the fact there aren't really many characters. It makes it easier to follow, and it keeps the movie down to earth, considering the theme of the movie.

The symbolism throughout the movie is something you need a couple of re-watches to get, this is the second time I'm watching it, but they're really good.

PS: If I'm not mistaken, the cameo of M. Night Shyamalan is the one person David is wrong about.

Gosh!
20 October 2022
M. Night Shyamalan has some amazing and original ideas. Not all are always well-executed in film version, but regardless, the ideas behind them is always food for imagination and thought.

The, or his rather, cinematography is always different compared to the run-of-the-mill Hollywood movies. It's fairly original, and at times, it's even experimental.

This one is seriously one of the highlights of his, and it took me long enough until I watched it for some reason. I guess I've just missed out on it due to my personal life.

What a glorious ride through bad craziness this movie is, and James McAvoy is beyond brilliant! Wow!

Anyway - I'm off to watch Glass (2019).
