This is a semi-fantasy genesis story through rose coloured spectacles & it works! The Get Down tells the story of artistic genesis set in a very creative time & place in human history; that being New York in the 1970s.
Before Hip-Hop became what we know today, rap (electro), break dancing & street art/graffiti were all intricately linked & The Get Down tells the story of their creation/evolution in a wonderful mix of storytelling, music & aesthetic. There's not much more to say. It's all very entertaining & nostalgic (to an extent).
The tools used to weave this world around are the likes of Grand Master Flash. Folk of a certain age & likes will get waves of nostalgia whilst watching the show. I got slightly giddy when Bambaataa (Afrika Bambaataa) was mentioned (I have Planet Rock on vinyl). Anyway, it's all told in a very fairy tale way, which really works. It adds a sweetness, depth, joy, enthusiasm, inclusiveness & optimism that the music & dance of that time had.
I'll finish this review by saying the lead actor is very good in the role of Ezekiel & that the women look great, I mean really great in seventies clothing.
