Great Movie
movieguy11a23 February 2005
This movie is one id never heard of but after reading the good reviews and seeing the film for myself I am pleasantly surprised. If you like offbeat low budget films you will appreciate this one. Joe Zaso is great as is the rest of the cast. Worth having for the film buff for sure. Not to be missed so check it out. Surprising gore and murder scenes. Film students and films buffs will love it. Proves you don't have to have a big budget for a quality film. This shows you how you can make a film and be proud of it. Great effects and music. Joe Zaso is great in this one for sure he has done some amazing work so look for anything with him in it.

A great art piece
BandSAboutMovies15 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man, a Super-8 looking movie made in 1996 that's supposed to look like a scuzzy 1971 Italian film? Yes, that's pretty much exactly the kind of movie that I'm looking for. And sure, the music is over the dialogue and nothing really makes sense, but if I worried about films making sense, I would have stopped this site long ago.

I mean, a beatnik poet spells out the title of the film and all of the dialogue is way off from the peope speaking it and there are big stretches where nothing happens, but hey - it's basically an American crew trying to make something that hasn't been made for a quarter of a century.

I don't know how good the rest of writer/director Joseph F. Parda's films are but with titles like Evil Streets and Machines of Love and Hate, they are wonderous if only in my imagination.

So yeah - it's about an artist obsessed with death getting killed, his body disappearing and his brother searching for it through a sexually twisted underground. You know - what we call Tuesday around here.

Just in case...........
joeshoe8912 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is just in case those of you who shop at Diabolik are going here before purchasing this on DVD and are going by the other reviews, here's an accurate review of the movie. I haven't listened to all of the commentary by the director and producer/star but they call this their tribute to the "giallo" my favorite eurotrash movie. Filmed on Long Island and what looks like some Manhattan apartments, it's a long way from Italy except maybe for some obvious scenes that are kind of "borrowed" (and i say that loosely) from much much better films. I'm not trying to criticize the quality but it's very obvious they had a very low budget to work with and the film looks like a bad VHS transfer (don't think it is it just looks that way there's a disclaimer at the beginning about flaws in the film etc ) with some truly awful sound (there are places where the music pretty much drowns out the dialog so you have to crank up the 5.1 hoping to hear what they're saying). There's a woman right at the beginning who is killed in the shower by a black masked killer clothed all in black with black gloves and a hat right out of any giallo made. This is fine but then the plot begins and as you watch the movie you come to find out her killing seems to have nothing to do with the plot whatsoever. And what a plot! I think these guys have much more in common with Ed Wood than Mario Bava or Dario Argento. Now I'm a big fan of Wood but he crafted a much better film than they have and the comparison is only that the script is the kind of loopy thing Wood wrote in the fifties. Hardly the stuff of giallos. An artist who paints some of the worst paintings ever seen conspired with his insane suicidal wife to be "killed" in order to make his paintings more valuable! Then he goes around (I think its him but then it could be his wife or the art critic- they throw her in as a possible murderess for no understandable reason)slashing up different people who have his art in order to take his paintings back! Anyone getting this?! A great many of the lines spoken are truly incredible and I have to quote a couple. The most Woodian character is a police detective who says (in true Wood fashion): "Give---me---a description and I'll send out an A (pause) P (pause) B. You just have to hear it! Then there's the star saying: " I told you 14 times....." ( as opposed to 13 or 12?).Most of the actors have wonderful Neeew Yawk accents that give this a kind of Hershell Gordon Lewis flavor. Imagine "Have you ever had an.....Egyptian Feast! in Long Islandese and you've got it. Anyway, I don't think this was meant as a comedy (although after the beatnik scene I'm really not sure) but if you're looking for horror this only qualifies if you're looking for so bad it's good I need to be high to enjoy omg I'm horrified I paid for this. Don't expect an American Bird with the Crystal Plumage!

Low Budget Neo-Giallo Gold
wildsidecinema12 June 2010
If you're a fan of Italian Gialli…grab the film. This is a stylishly shot low budget film that really attempts to deliver that old sleazy Giallo craziness without being a spoof. This is no comedy, Parda and the cast take the material very seriously.

While some may find the quality of the movie distracting, I found the grain and soft detail quite endearing. It was almost as if I was back in the eighties watching a 6th generation VHS bootleg of Deep Red! The guys behind 5 Dead on the Crimson Canvas even made sure to dub the film slightly off! I laughed my damn ass off as I watched. I kept thinking, "They had to of done this purposely!" and I'm fairly certain they did. It really lent a bit of authenticity to the film. I never feel quite right watching Italian horror films and Gialli with subtitles. It's gotta be dubbed for The Horror Pimp! Granted, it had issues. Which low budget film doesn't, right? One such issue was the soundtrack which fluctuated at times and threatened to drown out the actors vocals. Aside from that it was a decent soundtrack. I would have liked to have heard a soundtrack better resembling something like Goblin but you get what you get.

Another issue I feel worth noting is the dialog. It was extremely stiff at times. Now, I know that's sometimes a trademark of some Gialli, but it felt a bit too stiff in this film. Once again, you get what you get though and it's a minor gripe.

My hat is off to these gentlemen for making such a cool little film. It had a real story, outrageously twisted, interesting characters, tits, day glow blood and even a beatnik poet. Could a Giallo fan ask for anything more?

Criminally bad
Leofwine_draca14 April 2022
5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS is a pitiful tribute to the 'giallo' genre made on a shoestring budget in America - truly an 'indie' if ever I've seen one. While I do love the giallo film in general, this is totally unlike anything that springs to mind; all it has are murders committed by a black-clad killer and plenty of attempted style. The latter fails throughout, the lowest-common-denominator approach is on boring nudity and bloodshed, and the decision to deliberately add bad dubbing (pre-empting all those fake 'grindhouse' movies that would be made a decade later) is a criminal one.

neo giallo
nick12123514 February 2021
Okay this is actually really fun. It's extremely low budget with the drawbacks that come with that but I really enjoyed it. It looks to me like a film student's effort at creating a tribute to giallo films, and this is obviously someone who loves those films very much and has carefully crafted a piece in their honor. Actually good for a giallo made in the 90s, much better than a lot of the italian attempts at giallo around this time. This one gets the atmosphere right. however, If you've never seen giallo... certainly don't start with this.

LOVED the movie!
LongshotJB4 May 2002
I saw the movie some years ago on video, and I just came across it's listing on IMDB. It has that dark, "film noir" edge that comes across VERY well on the small screen. It also helps knowing the star, Joe Zaso. I've known him for some years, and have always enjoyed his performances.

Twisted Pycho Horror
gothicguru6 October 2007
I was completed enthralled by this film. The plot is thick and yet not difficult to follow. The characters are unique, slightly twisted (some more so) and yet believable. It is more creepy and mental in it's horror, but some scenes are nightmare worthy. I don't generally judge a movie on specific artistic merit - but rather I judge it on it's effectiveness in achieving an artistic vision overall - and it's entertainment factor. This movie is certainly for those that like a little visceral with their mental - the gore is squirm-worthy and the violence is filmed with intense staging. I would recommend this film for fans of Psycho, Phantasm, and Suspiria.
