Good Job, Remedy. Good Job.
colorthekid10 November 2019
You can tell the developers are purposefully trying to screw with you, because I've finished the game, watched a couple of videos on it, and still don't know what the heck they're trying to say.

But that mystery, the game's entire aesthetic and its incredibly satisfying gameplay are what make it one of the most unique games I've played in a while.

Just another case of the Mondays.
Fehrsho28 August 2019
The last game I played in which the character had supernatural abilities, I was saving a fictionalized New Orleans from a gargantuan, world-eater monster. Now-days, I've graduated to becoming the director of a shape-shifting, Brutalist skyscraper in the Big Apple, protecting it and it's people from a destructive, otherworldly force of possessive nature.

In 'Control', I portrayed the character Jesse Faden, who came to the Federal Bureau of Control in search of answers as to her brothers disappearance to the Bureau years prior. She finds the building bereft of employees, and the acting director dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head...with a seemingly supernatural sidearm.

Jesse retrieves the sidearm and, by order of the mysterious Board, becomes Director-in-Training, tasked with ceasing the invasion upon the Bureau's headquarters - The Oldest House - by the terrifying menace known as The Hiss. ---------- Immediately, I was sucked into the fluid, fast-paced action of Control with intuitive and responsive controls. Shooting is easy, both on-the-run and ADS, although I found it easier doing potshots than precise ones. The supernatural abilities that I've gotten my hands on early in the game are simplistic, but very well-crafted. Nothing feels hindered by any sort of UI elements. You simply use the power with the press of a button, and immersion is never broken.

Combat is difficult, and I sometimes found myself losing to a boss, returning and having to re-watch their unskippable intro scene. But Control's easy-to-master controller setup makes these moments marginally frustrating, and the combat system makes every return exciting. Enemy AI has been fair so far, though it doesn't seem different from any other shooter, despite Northlight's AI system being touted as something to gawk at.

The graphics presented their capabilities even on a regular PS4 system. The environments have believable and deep reflections and material to them, and the levels themselves are interestingly designed. There wasn't a moment in playing that I didn't feel curious about the environment I was in. The destruction capabilities of the game's engine really sold me, though. Projectiles rip through offices, taking out other physics objects in the room, and causing chaotic action scenes. Unfortunately, for early PS4 users, I noticed distinct framerate drops during some action sequences. They didn't seem to affect gameplay, however.

The story and how it unfolds are what shine the most in this game. Jesse is truly presented as a fish out of water, and every piece of exposition we hear is valuable and worthy of listening to. The Oldest House has a lot of secrets, and Jesse has access to all of them.

--------

All in all, Control is poised to be one of the most memorable games of the generation. Once again, Sam Lake and Remedy present us with a deep story, rooted in curiosity-binding place, pulled together with solid, responsive gameplay and topped with a bow. Anyone who's a fan of Alan Wake, or any number of Remedy's previous iterations owes it to themselves to gain some Control.

Solid Surreal Shooter.
parrot0076 February 2020
Control is another good hit for PlayStation. It provides lots of opportunities for exploration and has a nice volume of side missions in addition to the 15+ hour story. It has just enough gun varients and abilities to keep combat fresh, but I wouldn't say the game is highly replayable. I also think it would have been good to explore the levetation ability sooner than the final act. The story starts out and continues to be very cryptic for the majority of the game, however one can gather more information by gather notes and scattered everywhere. My 2 complaints with Control are firstly, that the story can be too confusing sometimes, as this fictional "Federal Buerau of Control" building is lacking context it it's world. It uses visual storytelling much more than dialogue and it sometimes suffers by not being specific enough with things. That said I do enjoy it's surrealist style overall. Second is it's very frustrating navigation thanks to a cruddy slapped on map and lack any precice waypoint system. In a building where many areas look similar it is easy to get lost and acctualy led me to a couple angry google searches. Such a silly oversight. No other problems with is this game though. The fact that I can say even this game is better than almost every Xbox exclusive is kinda sad....

Beautifully Spooky in all the right ways
generalphosphorus3 September 2019
Ever since this game was announced over a year ago I've been waiting to get my hands on it, and it did not disappoint. Impossible architecture combines with mind bending physics and amazing powers as you traverse The Oldest House, a mysterious building that you won't find unless it wants to be found. This game delivers on every front, Remedy has done it once again.

Ambitious, Original, Stunning.
HennyJimdrix8 October 2019
Gameplay, graphics, physics, detail - this game stretches current-gen hardware as far as any effort I've seen. The environments are as pretty & polished as you could want, but they're also fully destructible - and not even in a "some objects will fall over then disappear" kind of way. Effort has been made to keep every detail looking & feeling as realistic as possible, even in the middle of all the superpowered skirmishes. This is the real centrepiece of the game - your character's powers, and how you use them for fun & fighting. Jesse Faden starts out as a normal woman drawn by some inexplicable force to The Oldest House, a shady government bureau where she procedes to obtain an arsenal of supernatural skills - allowing her to overcome the House's hazards and uncover its secrets in the most joyful, empowering & eyecatching ways. The storyline (one of pseudoscientific research & interdimensional espionage) provides a creatively grounded backdrop linking the action together, but it always felt to me as if this was a gameplay-led project; while Alan Wake had some cool & innovative gameplay, its remembered mostly for its dramatic story and themes, whereas Control feels more like a showcase of video games as a spectacle. I wouldn't be itching to tell people about the narrative, which suffers a lack of clarity at times - there's a lot going on in The Oldest House, and much of it is devoid of explanation (which is probably intentional) or an obvious point (which probably isn't). However I couldn't wait to show friends all the cool stuff you can do whenever you feel like it, and how good it always looks when you're doing it. Confronting a wretched, wailing group of interdimensionally-possessed former office-workers who have become twisted beyond human form, and defending yourself by telekinetically flinging a tray of photorealistic coffee cups at them - that's what this game is all about. And it's great.

A really well-made game
katusch8 October 2019
The game has a great creepy atmosphere. but what i like most in this game is the detailed mess you can cause with your superpowers by flipping officetabels. I don't know any other game which is soo detailed.

Great mixture of gunplay and superpowers!
Matrix_Gaming11 March 2021
Control is a great game to pick up and play in terms of giving you an hour or two of high octane enjoyment.

Combat is great, with a mixture of impactful gunplay and several "superpowers". The "Service Weapon", that can mould into several different types of gun, feels forceful. But the superpowers are the highlight. With effortless controls, Jesse can levitate, launch objects through the air, mind control enemies and create a shield of rock pulled from the floor. The graphics and sound design on all these powers are incredible.

The story is interesting, but is not told in the right way. Unless you collect all the collectibles, (files, tapes, etc.), of which there are over 200, you probably won't understand the story. Through normal gameplay and cutscenes it can become nonsensical.

The Foundation DLC was just okay but the AWE DLC was disappointing, with hardly any connection and tie in with Alan Wake whatsoever. It would've been nice to see a few different environments.

I'd definitely recommend Control from a gameplay perspective. The story and narrative could've been so much better.

Control Review
Moviememmer29 May 2021
Pros:
  • Tight frantic gameplay
  • Fun powers and abilities
  • Good story
  • Good exploration
  • Interesting collectables and lore
  • Interesting side quests

Cons:
  • Anti-climatic ending
  • Some bland characters
  • A few more enemy types would be nice
  • Environments look kinda similar

Verdict: Control is pretty underrated. It has an interesting story, great gameplay, and interesting lore and world building. Despite some problems, including a bit of a lacklustre finale, Control is still worth a play

7.5 /10.

Fun game that dabbles in surrealism pretty well
Pepe-arbiter23 November 2020
Other than a bad experience where my save file somehow got corrupted, this was a fun entertaining ride filled with tons of fun side missions, a quirky story, and tons of surreal visuals along with setting up what promises to be an interesting franchise. Solid return to form for Remedy after Quantum Break.

Whoa. Pleasantly Unexpected.
dlinderman-554486 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I read reviews on the game and heard about it here and there but like many new IPs I sort of ignored it for awhile in favor of franchises I know better. Finally decided to give it a go and I was blown away by Control.

I did not expect the consistently spooky atmosphere, the intriguing plot, the focus on supernatural items and scenarios.

By far the best part of the game was the Ashtray Maze. Not only was it fun to go through, but the music that plays while running through it was fantastic, breaking up the creepy background sounds you get in the rest of the game with an adrenaline fueled rush through a warped reality.

Also, Dr Darlings Dynamite music video, top notch 🤣

Fun controls, interesting areas, good characters, a story that makes you go through to find out what's going on, and a lot of nice little touches make this a stand out game that I didn't expect to be so much fun.

IGN lied
karansharmapoirot15 December 2020
I generally watch Ign reviews before I buy my games. They had a great review for this game and hid the fact that it would run best on the PS4 pro. I have a PS4 slim and this game plays really poorly on it. Really disappointed by this.

I tried very hard to like it.
sonybacker-2149327 February 2020
I love story games and I know remedy knows how to make them. I even liked quantum break, it definitely wasn't perfect game but much more enjoyable than this. Problem with this game is that I just didn't care about main character and what happens in game. I thought I needed to give it more time but nothing changed and it was hard for me but I deleted it.

Original and awe-inspiring, only minor flaws
andromaro19 October 2022
This game is a pleasant surprise ever since the beginning. Remedy uses a cinematic style for its storytelling, with crazy visuals and cryptic shenanigans. It is a story where you can read between the lines, and if you have the patience to browse the many collectibles you can give interesting interpretations of the game. The characters are quite quirky, as expected, and the acting is convincing.

The gameplay is satisfying, a bit difficult to pick up the gunplay but very rewarding as for the kinetic powers. I really enjoyed the exploration, stumbling upon very secret areas and unlocking cool stuff.

On the downside I can only think of three issues: some visual hiccups, specifically faces going to a neutral expression too soon in cutscenes or the animations being a bit too stiff; aspects of the gameplay, like the fact that any melee attack you receive makes you one-shot regardless of your current health; counter-intuitiveness in certain side missions, it's really hard to understand what to do or where to go sometimes.

Absolutely loved it!
UndercoverZombie14 June 2020
The graphics are great and really in tone with the ominous vibe of the Paranatural world. Almost everything can be displaced or completely destroyed, which can be a lot of fun. Also, explosions.

The gameplay is perfect. The difficulty varies from fight to fight such that it is perfectly balanced. The enemies have different abilities and weaknesses so you have to improvise constantly. The leveling system is intuitive and straightforward.

The interface is better than in most games. The map can be a bit confusing in the beginning but you will learn the layout quite fast. There's auto looting when in proximity, you can fast travel, doors open automatically and you can move while looking at the map.

The story is mind-blowing and so well written that it does and doesn't make sense simultaneously. Every side quest, every conversation, every audio or text log, every note as well. They all fit and add to the experience.

Overall a truly immersive experience. Highly recommended!

Great game!
codyjohnson9817 March 2020
Okay I am just adding this comment to say that all the other comments are 100% correct. Evrrything about this game is great. For me. Everyone has their opinion. That being said the ones who are saying they dont like it are all saying it just because its a little hard.. Health, ammo, relode speed. Its not your everyday cookie cutter shooter. Which is a great challenge for once! Dont put down a game just because it actually requires you to learn the mechanics and perfect them. That is all.

A gem. Period.
Nephelith27 September 2020
I don't think I can bring an interesting review, everything has been already said. Remedy are proving yet again that they have their own style. Control is such a unique game, and after 64 hours I am still in awe. Unique architecture, amazing gameplay, interesting and immersive story, exentensive lore, touching characters, Control has it all. I couldn't be more in love with this game!

How did this get "Game of The Year?"
This game isn't bad but it is kinda repetitive and dull, as well as having a slow and confusing plot.

It is still a good game, but I am still shocked that gaming networks like IGN and Gameinformer gave this their "Game of The Year."

Once again it is still a good game, but Resident Evil 2 should had been "Game of The Year."

8/10.

Lore-ful Fun
BeyondJoyful31 December 2023
I can say without doubt this is one of my favourite games of all time. It spares no chance to get you deeply involved in the lore of the world and makes your feel at home with it. It makes you want to research even deeper into the context of the game to learn more. The aesthetics are superb, brutalist architecture mixed with a dated office design and contemporary feel is an unexpected, but welcome surprise! The acting, voice and otherwise is next level and a bone-chilling soundtrack make this next level game, my favourite game of all time. I'm looking forward to Control 2 and how they continue the story from there.

A fun and unique experience story wise, people familiar with the SCP Foundation will enjoy this a bit more than the rest.
LovecraftKaiju24 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
TL;DR - A fun and unique experience story wise, people familiar with the SCP Foundation will enjoy this a bit more than the rest.

A good part of the combat mechanics are innovative and well executed, but it lacks a little polish and optimization in the same department.

Main Questline goes for about 14 or 15 hours give or take your difficulty level, is a good experience at full price an even better one if you purchase this on any kind of sale.

Hopefully Remedy will take in all the feedback and make a much more Optimized and Balanced experience in the Sure to Be Sequel to CONTROL.

The Good - Jesse grew on me through out the game.

Being privy to her thoughts really endeared me to her and although it is not a new aspect from a character development perspective it is well executed and works to the game's overall experience.

The weirdness of the story really vibes in tandem with her character and the backstory given to Jesse.

Campaign Length is just right since it is pretty much a one track story and does not over stay its welcome with padding and or artificial stretching.

Combat mechanics were really fun Launch and Levitate are the primary ones you will use the most and everything about it from the animation to the utility of it is very satisfying.

The guns though not the most versatile helps fill the gap of the ability cool-downs and add a little variety throughout the game.

The Ability Tree and Mod Systems also help give you an extra edge during combat, not a whole lot in the case of the Ability Tree but the Mod Systems really enhance the experience.

The Bad - A lot of optimization and finesse in the game mechanics was needed to make this game reach the Legendary status it really deserves.

The Ability Tree for starters needed a good bit of tweaking since other than Launch and Shield ability almost everything else is near pointless; Life Bar, Ability Bar, Melee Combat is barely effective even after maximizing and Modding them.

Couple this with unbalanced and jarring difficulty spikes the game will really drive you on edge, add in a little bit of imbalanced save points to the mix and this game's novelty and refreshing nature drains itself out of you real quick at times.

Even the Mod Systems seems so restricted in comparison to all the Mods you receive during you playthrough for both your guns and abilities.

At least 4 or 5 slots each would really do wonders to the experience especially for your Abilities since the guns are rendered ineffective in lot of firefights once you pass the 3 to 4 hour mark.

You have to really learn quick that Launch ability is your Primary Weapon over the actual Primary/Secondary Weapons that you equip, I spent an ungodly amount of time on the Salvador fight since by that time I had not yet figured out that the game wants you to use Launch more than your guns and not the other way around.

Conclusion - All in all even with it's faults the game is greater than the sum of it's parts and the experience on a whole is quite satisfying. But the game really borders on making it near impossible to overlook all of it's flaws.

And hopefully Remedy will take in all the feedback and make a much more Optimized and Balanced experience in the Sure to Be Sequel to CONTROL.

Didn't Expect This to Be Remedy's Best Game
cchenders4013 August 2023
I love Quantum Break and Alan Wake. Obviously Max Payne is beloved as well. But wow Control takes the cake. This game is brilliant and addictive.

Positives
  • Story: insane story! If you told me Christopher Nolan wrote and directed this I would believe you. It feels like a Nolan movie from concept to execution. Great twists and turns, great characters, and an amazing ending.

  • Art direction. The art direction and style of this game is magnificent. Visuals you have never seen in any other visual art medium. The scope and scale is insane.

  • setting: a government office building that contains pockets and bridges to other dimensions. The office building is full of secrets, puzzles an; it is creepy as heck.

  • Atmosphere and tone: this game is a psychological thriller. The atmosphere fits that. I would not call the game scary, it is unsettling constantly. Scary moments yes but always creepy.

  • Combat: just play it and get all the abilities. There is no other game that plays this cool!

  • Movement: movement is great especially with dash and levitate.

  • Level design: souls like interconnectivity. Need I say more.

  • Great music.

Negatives
  • Some wooden line delivery from side characters.

  • Punishing check points.

Cons Completely Outnumber the Pros
trainspotting21 October 2019
The pros of this game are that it has good graphics, a good story and some interesting game mechanics like launch and the ever-changing gun for the director. However, the cons vastly outnumber the pros.

After even playing more of the game the absolute worse check point system of any game I have played, total dumpster fire of a system. Do you like starting check points 5 minutes away from where you died and have to fight your way back to a boss fight only to die again and do it all over again? This would also include large amount of times between check points and having to go back and keep doing over the same old garbage.

Do you like especially long game load times?

Do you like when every once in a while, you go into aim mode for your gun and the graphics basically block your entire view of the enemy you are shooting at?

Do you like long, long, long gun reload times? The worst reload mechanic of any game I have ever played. It is the same gun that morphs into different models but switching (Grip, Charge, Pierce etc..) to other models does not mean you have a full magazine you only have one reload for all guns.

Do you like whenever you empty your gun or use up all your energy the reload times basically double so you are left defenseless?

Do you like getting a very limited amount of resources to buy upgrades and find out that the last gun you can purchase in the game should have been essentially labelled GARBAGE( it is called Charge don't bother with it), and you find out to late that it was just a waste of resources?

Do you like a poor mapping mechanic and getting lost and a lot of needless running around?

Do you like when you are low health and near death to have the screen turn almost completely red and not be able to see your enemies?

Do you like saving up to increase your health only to find out that it doesn't matter because the enemies still one or two hit kill you anyways? (This is probably the most annoying feature of the game).

Do you like walking a few feet out of a room you just cleared only to find everything has respawned? Learn to dash by these idiot enemies.

Do you like being behind full cover only to be one shoted by an enemy you can't see?

If you answered yes to all or some of the previous questions than this is the game for you.

This game becomes very frustrating and if I knew now before I started the game, I would have never bothered to play it. By the end of this game which I finished, I absolutely hated it (Deleted the game right after finishing it). The finale is just wave after wave of guys with only one check point at the beginning of the level that I had to repeat a number of times (that happens a number of times throughout the game). Will not play another game developed by Remedy again.
