I really wanted to like this film...
28 February 2024
...but it was so confusing, so boring and without a real plot leading.

"I Confess" by Hitchcock is one of my favorite movies and it made me visit Québec City 4 times in my life.

I even stayed over night at the Château Frontenac Hotel (it was with $ 700 per night my most expensive hotel ever).

And I took the guided tour through this famous hotel twice, once in English and once in French.

So I would have expected to enjoy this film, but I didn't.

Actually I'm amazed it got 7 stars in the imdb.

My advice: rather watch "I Confess" with Montgomery Clift. That's true movie art. This one is chaos without a real story line.

Better than expected
24 September 2023
A few years ago I discovered this movie on Netflix and I had it in the Netflix queue forever. Now that Netflix is closing their DVD delivery by the end of this month and unfortunately changes to streaming (which means that many old movies from the 1940's and 1950's will be missing), I requested "Revanche" from our public library.

At first I was rather skeptical of the usual plot (red light district, hookers, drugs, gangster etc), but fortunately the movie develops in a totally unexpected way.

Some scenes made me think of Alain Delon's film scenes in Paris.

Most of all I enjoyed the lovely scenes filmed at the protagonist's grandfather's farm. So beautiful.

In a way the story reminded me very much of Patricia Highsmith's novels, just without the usual Highsmith ending.

Excellent TV Movie about domestic abuse
8 August 2023
Sure, there is a lot of similarity to Julia Roberts' movie "Sleeping with the Enemy", but that didn't keep me from enjoying this beautifully filmed in Brandenburg TV movie.

I've only seen Muriel Baumeister once in a movie based on Rosamunde Pilcher (Wild Mountain Thyme) and Bernhard Schir twice played the bad guy in two Charlotte Link thrillers, but this film was so much better than the productions I've mentioned.

Films on domestic abuse are rare and this is certainly one of the better adaptations on this delicate topic.

One out of three husbands beats up his wife and every other husband has an affair or more than one affair. So go figure how hard it is to find a good man.

Lovely Animal Movie
3 August 2023
I really don't understand why this lovely film got so many bad reviews. I haven't seen such a beautiful family movie in ages. I'm sick and tired of boring dystopian movies, brutal thrillers and road movies. There's just too much of that lately.

So this was like a fresh breeze to me.

Please make more such dog movies.

Except of William Baldwin I didn't recognize any of the other actors, but was impressed with Abbie Cornish and Tim Rozan.

The young actress who played Alex was great, too.

But the dog was the best in the cast.

I was wondering if the dog got trained by Teresa Ann Miller, but her name did not show up in the end credits.

The most boring Movie I ever watched
16 June 2023
At times "Nightmare Alley" reminded me of "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Elmer Gantry", two other movies which I didn't like.

Why this flick is considered a film noir is just beyond me.

I sure like Tyrone Power, but have seen better movies with him.

I also enjoy anything I had watched with Helen Walker so far (for instance "Call Northside 777" and "Impact"), but those few scenes with Helen Walker still don't make this a film noir.

I admit that the carnival/circus ambiente turned me off, I simply don't care for such movies with the exception of the Jack Palance TV series "The Greatest Show on Earth" (which will be released on DVD in Germany this year in August/September).

Intersting German Production
7 June 2023
ARD Degeto also produces the Charlotte Link TV thrillers based on her crime novels in Great Britain.

This time Degeto even made a German TV movie on an island in the beautiful Mahone Bay at the Southern coast line of Nova Scotia, near Chester and the town Mahone Bay. Not far from the infamous Oak Island.

I never watched any movies of Wolfgang Stumph, but sure enjoyed his role in this TV film.

Katrin Sass was rather annoying, playing the usual stubborn female. Nothing new here.

Just once I wish I could see an even-keeled 50+ female in a movie. But nowadays they all have big issues.

To bad the camera man did not capture more from the beautiful scenery. I've been to Novas Scotia in October 1994 and plan to have another vacation there. Those islands are mostly owned by German Aussteiger (hippies) I was told by an Austrian bookstore owner in Mahone Bay.

Very disapponting historicak Movie
31 May 2023
First of all: this is NOT a film noir.

I don't know who put this historical drama in the genre "film noir" and after having watched this very lame film, I cannot understand the high ratings.

I like Susan Hayward, I like Robert Cummings, but they were both acting very wooden and unconvincing in this flick.

Definitely not worth your time!

Instead I highly recommend to watch real film noirs instead, master pieces like like "They wouldn't believe me", "Dark Passage", "Conflict" and "The Reckless Moment".

The plot is not new, an American man comes to Venice. He looks for the long lost letters of a poet who lived here decades ago and was in love with a woman who is still alive and resides in Venice.

Don't judge this movie based on the reviews
24 March 2023
We watched the first 5 Jurassic films and except of part 2 we enjoyed all of them thoroughly, so we didn't want to miss this one. Part 2 was a bit boring.

I've read the reviews before we watched this film and think they don't do this movie any justice. Neither is the 6th Jurassic film boring nor is there a dinosaur attack every 3 minutes. People tend to exaggerate. Don't take them serious.

Part 6 has Laura Dern, Ed Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and the two major actors from the previous films reunited and we also see Blue, the cute raptor. She now has a baby and the scenes with Blue and the baby are particularly touching.

What I also enjoyed about this 6th part was for one thing the filming locations (Malta) and lots of new dinosaur types in close up scenes.

Forget about all these lousy reviews, simply give it a chance and enjoy this truly entertaining movie!

Good News for Fans
18 December 2022
In August 2023 the entire TV series "Zirkusdirektor Johnny Slate" aka "The Greatest Show on Earth" with Jack Palance will be released on DVD by Universal, a German DVD label. All episodes will be in color. Each episode will have the English track and thus can be watched by Americans, too. Maybe not on your NTSC DVD player, but on your laptop.

When I grew up in Germany in the 1960's, this was one of my favorite US TV series which I watched every week. The guest stars were unforgettable, I still remember the episode with Buster Keaton.

The circus show itself was incredible (and I was spoiled: living in Munich, we often went to Circus Busch).

Could have been a good thriller...

...without the F word in every third sentence.

Great cast with Jason Statham, James Franco and Winona Ryder.

The filming locations are great, I recognized New Orleans and some beautiful areas in the country.

Why is this not available on DVD?
16 January 2022
I was especially thrilled when I noticed that this film was filmed at Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains where my husband and I spent our honeymoon in 2011.

I never had watched anything with Haylie Duff before, but remembered Parker Stevenson from his wonderful part in "North & South". They both are good actors.

For a Lifetime movie, the filming locations were superior, the plot was captivating. I really don't understand the many 2 star reviews.

If there would be more Lifetime movies like this, I would be glued to that channel.

Wish this would finally be released on DVD.

One of the better MHC Adaptations
14 November 2020
I've warched more than 26 Mary Higgins Clark movies and TV movies over the past 35+ years and this is definitely one of the best. Connie Sellecca looked never more beautiful, Stewart Bick had a fascinating role and this was the first time I ever watched Beau Starr who played Sellecca's father. Never heard of him before. It's lovely to see Mary Higgins Clark in a cameo at the party. Her daughter Carol Higgins Clark (A Cry in the Night) played the angry wife of Shamus.

The best "Rebecca" Adaption
7 October 2020
I've read Daphne DuMaurier's novel "Rebecca" several times plus both sequels by Sally Beauman and Susan Hill which are also very gripping. I've watched the Hitchcock adaptation from 1940 multiple times, but never cared for Joan Fontaine's playing the second Mrs. de Winter.

This 1997 adaptation has it all: the perfect locations (Hitchcock couldn't film his "Rebecca" in Cornwall as WW II was going on), great actors and a wonderful score by Christopher Gunning. His score for the Sophie Marceau movie "Firelight" very much resembles his "Rebecca" soundtrack.

Diana Rigg impersonated Mrs. Danvers not quite as demonic as Judith Anderson did in 1940. Charles Dance was good as usual, but my favorite actress in this TV adaptation from 1997 is the young woman who played the second Mrs. de Winter.

A master piece
7 October 2020
I have to admit that I usually don't care for historical movies or historical novels, but this is one of the few exceptions ("Forever Amber" and "Gone with the Wind" are the two others). When this film was released in Hamburg, Germany, I went to the movie theater three times to watch it over and over again, because I knew that it would be ages, before it would be finally aired on TV where I could record it on VHS. As a matter of fact, it never was on German TV and in 2002 I immigrated to the US. By that time everything was released on DVD, but it took another 6 or 7 years, before I could order the DVD from Japan.

This is certainly one of Sophie Marceau's best and most watchable films...too bad, her very cute "La Boom" trilogy never was as popular in the US as it was in France and in Germany. Stephen Dillane's part was played very (com)passionate.

What I liked best about "Firelight" was the riveting score/soundtrack by Christopher Gunning. I'm just watching the TV remake of "Rebecca" with Charles Dance and Diana Rigg playing Mrs. Danvers. I noticed that the soundtrack resembles "Firelight" a lot.

I also enjoyed the lovely location where Sophie Marceau goes by boat, the little house in middle of the lake.

Hunting Nazi Treasure (2017–2018)

Worth watching
13 May 2020
The style reminds me a bit of the "Hunting Hitler" TV series on the History Channel a few years ago. After having read Edsel's book "The Monuments Men" and two other books on the topic WW II art theft in Europe, I simply had to watch this series and it turned out to be very compelling and never boring.

As I have a relative living in Eberswalde near Schorfheide, Germany, who took me on a bicycle trip on Schorfheide in 1987, I was particularly fascinated with the first episode called "Goering's Greed" and the underground passage at Carinhall. The other 7 episodes were similarly gripping. Edsel, Woodman and Holland are very inspiring and I hope there will be more seasons from this TV series in future years. Too bad nowadays there are less and less interesting documentaries. This was definitely one of the better ones. Don't miss it.

BTW I couldn't detect anything wrong with the narrator's pronounciation.

Excellent Documentary on the Frank Family
10 May 2020
Yesterday I watched it on DVD. Being very familiar with Otto Frank's life thanks to reading Carol Ann Lee's Otto Frank biography last winter, I remembered that Otto Frank actually was living for a while in New York City working at Macy's. Wiki quote. Otto studied economics in Heidelberg from 1908 to 1909 and had a work experience placement at Macy's Department Store in New York City. However, after leaving for New York, he had to return home briefly after his father died in September 1909, before once again leaving for the United States, returning to Germany two years later in 1911. End of the Wiki quote.

Considering Otto Frank's previous work experience in the US and the fact that his friend Nathan Strauss was willing to vouch for the Frank family makes it even less understandable why the US didn't give the Frank family visas for immigration. I collect every documentary on Anne Frank and her family, so this fairly new production is a big enrichment for my growing collection.

Superfluous Delon Movie
5 April 2020
Together with "The Assassination of Trotzki" and "Teheran 43" the worst and most boring Delon movie I've watched (and I've watched more than 40 of his films). How stars like Lauren Bacall and Alain Delon could agree to participate in this film desaster is just beyond me. I noticed that this one was not done bei Adel Productions (Alain Delon Productions) like most of his other movies. One star for the air balloon scenes.

Fabio Montale (2001– )

It doesn't get any better than this!
3 March 2020
The two other reviewers already did an excellent job reviewing this TV part trilogie based on Jean-Claude Izzo's trilogy "Total Chaos", "Chourmo" and "Solea" which I've just read this winter and can highly recommend to read. The translator did a great job...it's such a riveting read.

Being a fan of Alain Delon since I watched "Plein soleil" aka "Purple Noon" (still my favorite of more than 40 Delon films that I have watched), I finally watched "Frank Riva" and "Fabio Montale" mainly to complete my Alain Delon collection last year. And while watching "Fabio Montale" I fell head-over-heels in love with Les Calanques, the gorgeous landscape east of Marseille where Fabio Montale lives in his parents' home (both of them deceased). So for me Marseille and Les Calanques, the small and deep coves between Marseille and Cassis, are the true star of this TV trilogy. The cinematographer did an incredible job and of course Alain Delon is as always simply wonderful to watch.

Excellent Novel Adaptation
6 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I read the crime novel by Val McDermid several times and like the atmosphere and lonely location of the village where the story takes place. So I was kind of sceptical when I found out about the TV movie, but was pleasantly surprised.

Read the book first and then watch the TV movie as the ending in the movie is different (I like it better than the end in the book). After having read the first volume of Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy where he mentions Val McDermid a few times (but never "A Place of Execution"), I understand from where he got inspired for the Harriet Vanger case.

The best in the Airport series
15 July 2019
I just watched "Julie" (Doris Day) and "Turbulence" (Lauren Holly) in which the ending resembles "Airport 1975" a lot. From all 3 movies the Doris Day version is my favourite.

Andrew and Virginia Stone produced lots of great thrillers like "The Last Voyage", "Cry Terror!", "A Blueprint for Murder" and "The Steel Trap".

After 29 Minutes Alan Ladd shows up
9 June 2019
At first I thought I am watching the wrong film, but finally after 29 minutes Alan Ladd shows up in the role of William Dugan, a convict, and the film becomes a tiny little bit more interesting. It's also called "Gangs, Inc." and "Crime, Inc.". Would not watch this one again, it's a waste of time and simply doesn't get better. Too bad Alan Ladd couldn't refuse to make this movie.

Big Disappointment
2 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am trying to watch every Bette Davis movie from the 1940's and 1950's. If you expect something as compelling as "Now, Voyager!", "A Stolen Life" or "Beyond the Forest", you will be very disappointed from "Winter Meeting". It's over-loaded with dialogue and not a very witty one. Bette Davis hair-do is not becoming at all (these very short bangs were a terrible fashion!) and she doesn't wear the slightest hint of eyeliner or eye shadow. I'm sure the make up department could have made her look prettier. So it's hard to imagine that Jim Davis falls for her instead of chatty Janis Paige. The only good scenes which I rated with 2 stars were those outside of Manhattan when Davis and Davis enjoyed the sunny winter day in a horse-drawn sleigh.

I kept watching and watching, hoping at some point the story would pick up, but it never did. Don't waste your time with this one.

Based on Charlotte Link's Master Piece
28 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Hannelore Elsner is great in this role of the grown up girl who survived WW II on Guernsey, one of the beautiful Channel Islands between England and France. Ruth Maria Kubitschek as the selfish old German lady is also fascinating to watch. It has a parallel story line about a German woman coming to Guernsey for financial matters for her abusive husband. The German woman suffers from anxiety attacks and meets Hannelore Elsner's son, a lawyer and an alcoholic.

I would have rated it much higher if the production company would have filmed this on Guernsey instead of South Africa. I was on Guernsey in 2014 and went to Le Variouf and the beaches (all locations mentioned in Charlotte Link's novel are real) and it really bothers me that this from all Charlotte Link films was filmed near Cape Town whereas other Charlotte Link adaptations have been filmed in France (Provence) and in Scarborough, UK. But for unbiased viewers who are not familiar with the novel or with Guernsey it's a gripping TV drama. Enjoy!

One of the best CFF Films
5 April 2019
I watched this CFF movie for kids on German TV way back in the late 1960's and am hoping till this day that it will get released on DVD. All I remember is that it was filmed in Scotland next to a castle and it was quite suspenseful. I enjoyed it very much and when German TV channel Pro7 aired many old CFF films again in the winter, spring and summer of 1989, I was hoping and waiting for this one and for "Fourwinds Island", but in vain. By the time I had written to Pro7 and received an answer, they had already changed their format and from that time on it was all new TV productions. Too bad!

Probably the best CFF Movie
5 April 2019
Way back in the early to mid 1960's I watched this great CFF master piece on German TV. Ever since VHS was invented, I was trying to get a copy from this CFF film, but unfortunately BFI has no master copy and in Germany (where a master copy with original English track is available at the TV Archives) it cannot get released on DVD, because 6 other old CFF movies did not make enough profit to continue releasing more old CFF films on DVD's. To make up for the fact that I most likely won't ever see this film again in my lifetime, I bought the book (with the same title) by Vega Stewart. It's nice, but it's not the film...
